possible a few simple recommendations should be followed. This guide will give you a simple list of
instructions (do’s and don’ts) for mobile survey creation.
Part 1: Question Types
Many of the standard question types that are used frequently when a survey is designed for the
desktop or laptop computer are not looking well on the mobile screen, simply because they cannot
fit onto the screen. More about Key Survey Question types you can find here:

Such question types in Key Survey include Rate Items Along the Scale of Your Choice and 3D
Matrix. It is recommended to avoid these question types when you are designing your surveys
for mobile devices and replace them with a number of other questions. For example: Rate Along
Scale may be replaced with a few Pick One or Other questions.
However, replacing a Rate Along Scale question is not always possible and sometimes this question
type is really required. In this case we recommend applying Star Ratings Plugin. This plugin will
replace the list of radio buttons question with "stars" widget.
Let us take a look how the following plugin can be applied to the survey:
1. Insert new question of the Rate Along Scale type if not done before. For example:

2. Go to the survey Rules>Plugins page and insert the Star Ratings Plugin from the Visual and
Interactive category.
3. Reference to the Rate Along Scale question using the Qx notation, where x is the question
sequence number within a survey.
4. Click the Save button to apply the plugin.
The question will look as following both on a computer and a mobile device:
This plugin is not available for the 3D Matrix questions, therefore we recommend avoiding this
question type if you know that your survey will be taken on a mobile device.
Part 2: Themes
Key Survey offers a list of survey layout Themes that have been professionally designed and
optimized to look well on mobile screens. The Themes are located in the special Mobile category in
the Theme Library. Please feel free to take one of the Mobile themes and modify it by going to the
survey Layout page:
1. From the Surveys home page select the survey and click Edit>Layout from the surveys
information pane in the right.

2. From the Standard Themes folder select the Mobile category. It contains different ready-made
themes which can be applied just in one click.
3. Use the Master Survey URL to preview the survey.
If one of the Mobile themes is applied to the survey it will look well on the mobile screen as well as
on the desktop and laptop screens.

Part 3: Plugins to enhance the user experience
Key Survey also offers a number of plugins to enhance the user experience for those taking the
surveys on the mobile devices. Star Ratings Plugin has been already mentioned above to enhance
the look and feel for the Rate Along Scale questions.
Another good plugin to consider is the Mobile Friendly Controls. This plugin will replace standard
radio buttons and checkboxes with touchscreen friendly buttons that are easy to select using
fingers and thumbs.
Follow these easy steps to apply it to your mobile-friendly survey:
1. Go to the survey Rules>Plugins page and insert the Mobile Friendly Controls plugin from the
Visual and Interactive section.
2. No special parameters or references should be defined. Just click Save to apply the plugin.
The survey will look as following on the mobile screen as well as on the desktop and laptop screens:
