Daniel Wellington
WD
The story behind the Swedish watch brand Daniel Wellington begins with a trip
half way around the globe where the founder, Filip Tysander, met an intriguing
gentleman from the British Isles. The man had the inspiring ability to be gentlemanly
but still relaxed and unpretentious. He had an impeccable style, and loved to wear his
vintage watches on old weathered Nato straps. His name? Well, Daniel Wellington
of course. The Daniel Wellington watch is suitable for every occasion and with its
interchangable straps you can have a different watch for every day of the week.

TERRY CHECK, a passionate but not too serious lover of art and fashion, travels the world
to art openings and fashion shows always looking for a good story and a little fun. Whether
it’s Art Basel in Miami or fashion week in Paris, he explores the collaboration of art and
fashion from the 1920's to conceptual, sometimes understanding the work, and other times
having no idea whether it’s fine art/fashion or child’s play. A native of upstate New York, he
shares his perspective about contemporary art and fashion of emerging artists to industry
icons. Multi-facetted as an artist/writer/photographer, his work is widely exhibited in the
USA, represented by the Fay Gold Gallery and Chic – Evolution in Art, and is published in
Mode Lifestyle, Fashion Xchange, Le Style and of course, Cliché. He says, “Let’s enjoy art
and fashion together, gaining a better understanding of the artist’s message or dialogue with
the viewer. Finding the message is sometimes difficult, and at times there is no message but
our interpretation.” terry@clichemagvip.com

xactly two years ago when I first became the
new Editor in Chief of this magazine, I was
putting this thing together at my kitchen table,
collecting photographs from talented, generous
photographers, and writing articles with a small
group of friends at my university. Although I still sometimes
work from my kitchen table, now I have a whole team backing
me, lending their support, thoughts, and passions—and I
couldn’t be more grateful. The day I launched my first issue,
I had a small celebration at home—with a few drinks and a
delicious cake—and I wished that, someday, this magazine
would be where it is today.
	 TocelebrateCliché’s5thbirthdayandthelong-awaited
arrival of summer, I wanted this issue to be about fun—because
what is fun anyway, if not doing something you love, something
that makes you happy? I’d be the first person to defend the idea
that you can have fun all by yourself—by reading an exciting
book, putting together new outfits, practicing new hairstyles
and makeup tricks, and the list goes on! And for those who
crave the warmth of company and laughter, head to the beach
this summer, go traveling, and share some of your favorite
music with someone special. I encourage everyone to just do
what they love this summer, and just have fun.
The people I know will be having fun this summer
include Ethan Thompson, former American Idol contestant,
while he tours California to promote his debut EP (read my
interview with him on pg. 134), our beautiful cover girls
Serinda Swan (pg. 106) and Nicky Whelan (pg. 114) as they
further their careers, and the ton of other musicians, actors,
and artists we interviewed this issue. And we can’t forget our
writers, who will reporting on their favorite summer findings
and activities—both in this issue and on our blog—as well as
soaking up some sun. More than anything, I hope this issue
inspires you all to let loose and enjoy the summer.
And as far as anniversaries go… here’s to many more.

ho doesn’t
love those long
summer days that
are either spent at
the amusement
park, catching
waves at the beach, lounging around the
poolside, or just taking a road trip with
friends? That all sounds great, but all
that fun can leave your hair feeling brittle
and frizzy. It happens all the time—we
get ready to conquer the day and our
hair is just the way we want it... until we
take one step out the door and poof, we
look like we just got electrocuted. We
all know no matter how much hair spray
we pile on and how long we take getting
ready, the moment our hair meets the
humidity, it’s over; yet we do it anyway
in hope of a miracle. Well, there is hope.
Below is a list of five great products that
will help defeat the frizz. BY JASMINE
MOUSTAFA
Living Proof No Frizz Leave-In
Conditioner
This leave-in conditioner leaves hair
looking healthy and rehydrated. It’s
packed with Living Proof’s signature
Healthy Hair Molecule that is said to be
70 percent better than other humidity-
defying silicone and oil treatments.
Another plus about this product is that it
is sulfate-, silicone-, and oil-free.
John Frieda Unwind Curls™
Calming Crème
Most of the frizz tamers out on the
market are made to work on straightened
hair, but what if you just want to manage
those curls? Look no further than John
Frieda Unwind Curls™ Calming Crème.
It loosens and smooths tight curls,
leaving them feeling soft all day.
OGX Ever Straight Brazilian
Keratin Therapy Shampoo and
Conditioner
If you want to start managing frizzy
hair while you’re in the shower, I
suggest using OGX Ever Straight
Brazilian Keratin Therapy Shampoo and
Conditioner. Together they are designed
to leave hair looking healthier, straighter,
and frizz-free over time. If you love
your curls and don’t want to go for
that straightened look, this product still
works wonders—just don’t flat-iron your
hair afterwards.
Bumble and bumble Defrizz
This product is a really light serum that
works great with fine hair and in just
about any climate to manage curls, frizz,
and flyaways. It leaves hair looking
shiny and healthy. Just apply a few drops
to damp hair and you’re ready to take on
any weather headed your way.
W
Garnier Fructis™ Sleek Shine
Intensely Smooth Leave-In
Conditioning Cream
This product contains argan oil which
repairs and nourishes damaged hair,
leaving it moisturized and feeling soft
for up to 48 hours. It is said to stand up to
97 percent of humidity, so why not give
it a chance?

Beauty Director
ELIZABETH MASCI
shares her summer
beauty picks!
very month when I sit down to write this
column, I think of reasons why that specific
time of year is so amazing for beauty junkies.
From finding red-hot lipstick shades for
holiday parties, to picking out pastel nail
polish shades for spring, there really is
something I look forward to with each passing
season of the year, especially when it comes to beauty products.
But there’s something special to be said about summer. Maybe
it’s the touch of sun-kissed skin, the natural highlights in my
hair after a few days on the beach, or the fact that I can get
away with Barbie pink lipstick for three months out of the year.
In the spirit of my (maybe) favorite season, I’ve compiled a
list of my go-to summer essentials—a “summer survival kit,”
if you will. In the meantime, enjoy the sun, wherever you may
be. Stay fabulous, always. XO, ELIZABETH
Ocean Potion Sunscreen
Need a sunscreen that goes above
and beyond and smells amazing?
Ocean Potion Sunscreen (Walmart,
$6.67) has been my absolute
favorite sunscreen for years. Their
flawless formula includes sea plant
botanicals, antioxidants, and tons
of Vitamin D3 to keep your skin
looking youthful and rejuvenated
as you soak up the summer rays.
Ocean Potion also features a non-
greasy formula and Vitamin E to
fight off free radicals, making it the
perfect addition to your beach bag
essentials.
Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls
I used to hate what the summer
humidity did to my already frizzy
hair, until I
found Miss
Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls (Target, $22).
This styling lotion promises frizz-free,
soft and bouncy waves, without the
crunchy curls we all try to avoid during
the summer months. I love the soft
hold of Miss Jessie’s and the fact that
it works wonders both ways: air dry or
with a diffuser.
STILA Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner
There’s nothing better than waterproof
mascara, except for waterproof liquid
eyeliner. I recently started using it this
past spring when my watery, allergy-
ridden eyes were messing up my
eyeliner on a daily basis. STILA’s Stay All Day Waterproof
Liquid Liner (Sephora, $20) features a thin, marker-like tip
that creates a smooth, smudge-free look with quick precision.
The best part? The liner comes in fifteen different shades,
including playful summer colors like Paradise Pink, Cobalt,
Light Turquoise, and Periwinkle Blue.
CND VINYLUX Polish
VINYLUX is the next big thing in manicures, featuring week-
long wear (really!), self-adhering color, and only two steps for
faster service. Think of it as somewhere in between a regular
mani and gel. It’s lighter and more convenient than gel but
boasts more staying power than your run-of-the-mill mani. It’s
perfect for people like me who like to change their polish color
often, but need the durability of a gel manicure. Check out their
website at cnd.com and find a CND salon near you!

THE BLONDE
VEGAN
here’s something
special about Jordan
Younger, a.k.a. The
Blonde Vegan. Is it
her bubbly, warm
personality? Her
relaxed, straight-off-
the-Cali-beach mentality? Or maybe it’s
her enviable, bi-coastal lifestyle. Okay,
so it’s probably all that and more. But
what we love most about Younger is her
super approachable vibe and surprisingly
accessible vegan blog. Unlike other
health junkies on the web, Younger
passes no judgement, and instead invites
her followers to make food and health-
related choices that are best for them
and the lifestyle they want to live. From
delectable recipes to restaurant reviews
and updates on her yoga journey, The
Blonde Vegan is the perfect hotspot for
anyone interested in living a healthier
lifestyle, whether you’re ready to make
the vegan commitment or just want to
dabble in healthy eating. We got the
chance to sit down with Younger and
talk about her blog, her health-driven
lifestyle, and all things vegan. Thanks
to her, we’ve realized that the vegan
lifestyle is not so scary and can be totally
delicious! We have a feeling you’ll think
so, too. BY ELIZABETH MASCI

Cliché: How has your life changed
since you decided to go vegan?
Jordan Younger: My life has changed
in so many positive ways since my
decision to go vegan. The greatest
change took place within me because,
for the first time in my life, I am feeding
myself with foods that do not bother
my extremely sensitive stomach. I have
lost weight and gained a ton of energy,
but most importantly the stomach
problems and migraines I had suffered
from my entire life have disappeared.
I am happier and more confident, and I
have significantly less stress in my day-
to-day life. It’s crazy how much food
can stress you out if you aren’t eating
the right foods for your body. I have
also been given the wonderful gift of
helping others transform their lifestyle
through my blog, which has given me
a new sense of purpose with veganism.
Connecting with like-minded individuals
and helping others find the healthiest
version of themselves has become a huge
part of my life, and without veganism, I
wouldn’t have found any of that.
What role does exercise play in
your vegan lifestyle?
Exercise plays a vital role in my vegan
lifestyle. Without exercise, a healthy diet
cannot fully do its job, just like without
a healthy diet, exercise cannot really do
its job. My fitness philosophy is similar
to my food philosophy: find what works
with your body, and then be consistent
with it. I practice yoga every day because
I am in love with the exercise, the yogic
philosophy, and the way that it makes
me feel. I also run anywhere from 3-5
days a week, I swim and bike in the
summertime, and I am a pretty huge Soul
Cycle fan. When you eat well, there is
no excuse not to be active, and you will
probably find that you end up falling in
love with it! The two go hand in hand.
What is your biggest challenge
when it comes to your vegan diet,
and how do you deal with it on a
daily basis?
The biggest challenge would have to
be the social aspect. It’s hard to strike a
balance between being that token vegan
friend who can’t eat anything when
you’re out and totally going with the
flow and not mentioning your dietary
restrictions. Because of the difficult
nature of eating out on a plant-based
vegan diet, I’ve had to make sure I am
surrounded by very supportive people.
Certain people get annoyed when you
make a huge lifestyle change that doesn’t
align with the way they live their life,
and if it becomes an issue, I’ve had to
learn to let some people go. Once you
adopt veganism as a lifestyle and you get
used to the changes that come along with
it, the people in your life get used to it as
well. Things that were challenging in the
beginning are much easier now. Oh, and
I’ve learned to plan ahead! I always bring
snacks with me, especially if I know I am
going to be in a situation where there is
not going to be a whole lot for me to eat.
What made you decide to blog
about the lifestyle you’re choosing
to live?
I started an Instagram account to share
my food photos when I first got really
into vegan cooking. There was such an
outpouring of support on Instagram,
and my following grew pretty quickly.
At a certain point it became apparent to
me that I needed an outlet to share the
recipes and to share tips and tricks that
I had learned along the way by living a
vegan lifestyle. That’s where the blog
stemmed from, but it has evolved into so
much more. Now I share quite a bit of
my personal life on the blog, restaurant
reviews, yoga details, QA’s with
industry professionals, and my struggles
with stomach problems. You name it—
it’s on there. The blog has become such
an incredible personal space for me. Not
to mention, I love to write, so it ended up
being a very natural fit!
For many people, food is the
centerpiece of their social life. How
do you manage to keep your cool
and maintain your vegan lifestyle
without compromising your social
life?
It can definitely be a challenge. I’ve
had to learn (through major trial and
error) that going out to eat with friends
is so much more about the company
than about the food itself. It can kind of
suck to be that girl who shows up and
only orders water or a side salad with
no dressing, but you’ve gotta do what
you’ve gotta do and there’s no sense in
paying for a meal that you’re not going
to be able to enjoy. I have learned to plan
ahead and eat beforehand if I know there
isn’t going to be anything for me at a
restaurant. But I have made it a big point
to never allow my veganism to deter
me from doing things with my friends.
I go to all the same places with them
that I would have gone before; I just
steer clear of the food aspect! And I’ve
also found that people are inclined to
follow by example, so a lot of my friends
have developed the “healthy bug” after
watching my lifestyle transformation.
That has been fun for me because I get to
take them to healthy restaurants and try
fun vegan or vegetarian spots with them.
We like to do a trade off. If we go out to
a nice “regular” restaurant one night, the
next time they will try a healthier place
with me. It’s all about finding a balance.
How is your blog different from
the slew of other foodie/health

do by journaling your experiences

while I might be the resident beauty

it, which helps hydrate and protect your

I make it a huge priority to respond to
each and every one of the comments
and emails I receive. When people first
realize that I do this, they are pretty
blown away. I receive several hundred
emails per day and usually even more
comments. I think that the purpose of
a blog is all about the interaction and
the communicative aspects. I have
never wanted to be closed off to my
blog readers, and I always want them
to know that I am available to answer
their questions and help them reach
their goals. I think that has something to
do with the fact that my blog stemmed
from my Instagram, which is such
a personal space. I want my readers
to feel like we are in conversation.
Anything goes! Another way in which
my blog is different is that it goes
beyond the recipe creation. I discuss
everything from my
stomach issues and
disordered eating
struggles to posting
interviews with my
favorite authors and
health bloggers.
I try to make the
vibe as community-
oriented as possible.
By journaling
my experiences
online, I hope to
continue connecting with like-minded
individuals and growing my brand.
Eventually I would love to expand to
the point where the blog will be my
full-time job. I just launched my t-shirt
line, I am in the process of creating an
app, and ultimately I want to write a
book. The blog is the home base for all
of those projects and goals.
What are your top three favorite
super-foods?
Cacao (total chocoholic over here),
maca powder (energy boost!), and
coconut shreds. I’m obsessed with all
three.

“My favorite summer beauty
product is NARS Pure Radiant
Tinted Moisturizer (I use the color
‘Martinique’). It’s my favorite foundation
substitute for summer because it covers
well, but allows my skin to breathe, and
it doesn’t melt off my face! An added
bonus: it’s SPF 30, so it protects my skin
from skin-damaging UV rays.” —Meme

“Ever since last summer, I’ve been
obsessed with Ouidad Wave Create Sea
Spray. I love rocking the beachy wave
look all summer long, and this product
is perfect for creating a sexy, tousled
look in no time.” —Elizabeth Masci,
Beauty Director
“After a long winter of sporting dark
nails and nudes, I am eager to start
wearing more cheerful and fun colors this
summer. My current lacquers of choice
are from Butter London, particularly the
coral shade ‘MacBeth’ (for the English
major in me) and the orangey ‘Sunbaker’
(because, well, obviously).” —Megan
Portorreal, Editor in Chief
“My favorite summer beauty pick is
Neutrogena’s Shine Control Primer
(the liquid one). It is an affordable
primer that keeps my face shine-free and
my makeup fresh, even on those wild
summer nights! —Valerie Oppelaar,
Web Editor
“Nars Lovejoy Blush: this gorgeous
shimmer blush is absolutely perfect for
any skin tone, especially in the summer!
While you work on your tan, this coppery
rose hue will accentuate any bronze tints
you’ve picked up from the sunshine. Say
hello to skin that glows!” —Jennifer

“I’m obsessed with Fig+Yarrow’s Body
Scrubs, so when summer comes around,
I make sure to restock on their Sea Scrub.
It makes my skin look and feel just as
amazing as it would after a long day at the
beach… without the sunburn, of course.”

Mattify the complexion with a
foundation brush and HOURGLASS
Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation,
as the complexion is matte.
Eyes
Keep the eyes simple by applying
mascara on the top and bottom lashes,
more so on the top to curl and lengthen
them. Applying a lighter eye shadow,
such as champagne, on the inner corner
of the eyes will cause them to open right
up, so they look awake, as well as make
them pop. Top it off with eyeliner by
applying it on the upper lash line and the
bottom line, but only apply it at the outer
corner of the eye. With an eye liner or
angle brush smudge the pencil eye liner
on the bottom lash line three quarters,
continue to line the eyes to the inner
corner lightly, so it’s subtle. For lasting
application, set it with talc-free powder.
As for the brows, well, it
isn’t something to forget, as it's just as
important as all the other features. With
an angled brush, apply brow powder on
the arch, working your way to the tip.
Lastly, with a little brow powder left on
the brush, fill in the inner brow that is
near the inner eye. Powder is much more
natural than pencil, and it also prolongs
the makeup.
Lips
Take your matte coral red lipstick and
lip brush and apply the formula to the
centre of your lips, working your way to
the edges. For a more intensifying look,
apply the lipstick directly to the centre of
your lips, working your way to the edges
by using the tip of the lipstick. Line your
lips after the application with the exact
same color of the lipstick or, with a
powder foundation, tap it at the lip line
to ensure bleeding does not occur.

Eyes
Keep the eye makeup simple by applying a
brown eye shadow to define the eyes. Silver
eye shadow applied in the inner corners of
the eyes will make them pop, as well as
make tired eyes appear awake. Next, line
the eyes with eyeliner, preferably powder
eyeliner (black eye shadow) that can be
used wet or dry. To intensify the black eye
shadow, place the angled brush that already
has product on it into a damp paper towel,
remembering to always remove any excess
product onto a dry paper towel before
applying your makeup. Lastly, line your
eyes; be sure to line them at the lash line top

application. Last is mascara, and because
it is summer, waterproof mascara would be
best to use. For clump-free lashes, wipe off
any excess product onto a paper towel and
apply in a zigzag motion. Don’t forget the
eyebrows; they must be filled in. With an
angled brush, apply brow powder on the
arch, working your way to the tip. Then,
with a little brow powder left on the brush,
fill in the inner brow that is near the inner

tion with their modern, edgy commer-
cials. So when a new product of theirs
hits the drugstores, there is no doubt it
will be raved about. Rimmel London’s
Lip Lacquer is one of their many suc-
cessful products. Their creative take
on a lip product has resulted in neither
a lipstick nor a gloss, but something in
the middle. A perfect combination of the
two, this lip lacquer is extremely rich
in color! It’s absolutely a keeper in our
makeup bags, as it gives our lips that
satin finish that is perfect for every look.

Melt-Proof
Must-Haves
e have been wait-
ing all year for
brilliant sunshine
and enviable tan
lines, but with
summer comes
heat—and a lot
of it. The rising temperature is a welcome
warmth when you’re lounging poolside
or lapping through the ocean, but when
you’re standing on line at Starbucks dur-
ing your lunch break in the middle of July
and can almost feel your makeup drip-
ping from your face, the sticky heat is
not welcome. Luckily for you, before the
escalating weather can ruin your make-
up, we’ve compiled a list of melt-proof
must-haves to get you through the sum-
mer in style! BY AMANDA CURRAN
CAMERA READY
When it’s 90 degrees and the sun is shin-
ing a little too bright, you don’t want to
clog your pores with a mask of founda-
tion. Instead, opt for something lighter,
like the Smashbox Camera Ready CC
Cream. This all-star product packs a
powerful punch as it protects your skin
from the sun with SPF 30. It also primes
your skin and smooths over large pores
and uneven texture while hydrating and
color-correcting (hence why it’s called
CC cream) any dark spots or post-acne
marks. Because the cream is so light-
weight, it will feel less like makeup
and more like skin, all while still offer-
ing sheer to medium flawless coverage!
GO WATERPROOF
Looking like a raccoon will never be
trendy, which is why we suggest invest-
ing in a good waterproof eyeliner that
won’t bleed halfway
through the day and
give you runny, inky
circles around your
eyes. The Sephora
Collection Con-
tour Eye Pencil
offers 12 hours of
wear that will not
budge or smudge,
even while you’re
sweating it out in
the summer heat.
These pencils come
in an array of col-
ors with dense pigmentation that will
allow you to play up your eyes without
having to worry about the mess later.
PRIME TIME
The key to keeping makeup on your
face is primer, and a good one at that.
Benefit Cosmetics has struck gold with
their Stay Flawless 15 Hour Primer.
Unlike most primers that come in a tube
or a jar, this fool-proof formula comes
in a stick that can be applied directly to
W
the face and worked into the skin with
your fingers. A couple swipes of this
primer will protect the natural oils of
your skin (and sweat) from breaking
down your makeup, giving you flaw-
less skin for up to 15 fabulous hours.
CRAZY FOR COCONUT
What goes good with a tan? A healthy
flush. Josie Maran’s Coconut Water
CheekGeléesarecream/gelhybridblush-
es that give your sun-kissed face a natu-
ral pinch of color. Made of coconut water
and infused with argan oil, these blushes
are applied like a gel and dry like a stain,
infusing rich pigment and hydration into
the skin to give a long-lasting flush that
won’t disappear under the summer sun.

BEAUTY
SLEEPCliché: When did you realize you
wanted to open a lingerie boutique?
Galina Sheveleva: I have been making
garments here and there for years now.
However, I started to play with the idea
of opening my lingerie boutique last
summer and within a few weeks, I had
fully undertaken that initiative.
What is your designing process
like?
I always carry a notebook with me
because it is often in the weirdest places
and situations that an idea hits me, and
if I don’t sketch it, I will forget it. Once
I have many designs in my notebook, I
pick which ones I want to play around
with and make samples of. I buy different
fabrics and do several versions of the
garments, noting which ones work best.
Which piece from the collection is
your favorite?
I’ll cheat a little bit and give you two. One
is the golden sleep mask. Why? Because
it’s a great sleep accessory. It is very soft
and comfortable, looks amazing, and is
fully functional. The other one would
have to be the silk slip. The fabric is a
silk satin, which feels wonderful against
your skin. When I put it on, I feel like a
movie star from the 60’s, pampered and
gorgeous at the same time.
Have you ever wanted to design
other types of clothing?
I definitely want to expand my brand
in the future and design all kinds of
garments. My inspiration is not limited
to lingerie and sleepwear.
What can we look forward to from
GSintimates in the near future?
More diverse lingerie and sleepwear
collections. Also more creative designs,
more assortments of garments, and a
more interactive online store.

think it’s pretty obvious,
after writing this column
each issue, that I love fashion
and I love being a fashion
director. One direction of
fashion that I love delving
into is effortless, comfortable
fashion, especially in the summer
months. We all lead busy lives, myself
included. Girls should be able to throw
something on and bing, bam, boom—
look fashionable! Effortless fashion is
not only easy to accomplish, but easy
to pull off. So, this month, ladies, think
about what effortless fashion means to
you. We all have that one piece in our
closet that we beeline to when we’re
looking to be comfy, yet cute. Is it your
most comfortable sweater or tee, or
perhaps your go-to slip-ons? For me, it’s
my Childish Gambino tee and my black
Keds. Whatever it is, make it easy, make
it comfy, make it, most importantly, you.
There’s only one of you, after all. Here are
my latest comfy, effortless fashion and

ounder and President of
G-Loves Hedda Royce
is the real Superwoman
to ladies in the world of
fitness. This Connecticut
native and Business School graduate
followed her dreams in creating women’s
workout gloves that fit properly and look
great. This certified personal trainer
accredited by the American Council on
Exercise (ACE) and the Aerobics and
Fitness Association of America (AFAA)
has the brains, strength, and looks. From
Los Angeles, Royce talks to us about
her determination for her business, her
passion for weightlifting, and her joy of
drawing comics. BY TATIANA STEC
Cliché: You graduated from Tufts
University in Massachusetts. Are
you from the area?
Hedda Royce: I was born in
Connecticut, but I went to Massachusetts
for college and I worked in investment
banking after I graduated. I actually
moved back to Connecticut when I went
to Business School to get my MBA.
How did you get the idea to start
G-Loves?
After I received my MBA, I didn’t feel
like I was inspired by anybody that I met
or any companies. I’ve been dreaming
about the gloves since I was 10 years
old because I played tennis and started
lifting weights to balance my body.
When you play tennis, you use your
dominant hand when you hit the ball, so
one half of your body gets developed and
the other half doesn’t. I was introduced
to a weightlifting program and that’s
when I fell in love with it. I was always
looking for gloves because my hands
were so tiny and small, and I could never
find anything that worked. I kept talking
about it over the years as I lifted weights:
“Why can’t anyone make gloves? Why
can’t anyone do this business?” So I just
decided, you know what, that’s it, I’m
going to do it! Up until I made gloves,
I really felt like the women’s gloves that
were made were basically men’s gloves
cut smaller. Women’s hands are much
more narrow, I think they just used men’s
gloves and scaled them down instead of
making them thinner around the width of
the hand.
G-Loves is such a cute and slick
name. How did you come up with it?
Oh my god—many years ago, when I
was maybe 15 or 16, I thought, “If I made
my own gloves, I’d call them G-Loves.”
The glove idea was something that I
abandoned, then came back to. I would
always work out and think of it, and then
I decided to fuse all my passions together.
I’m a business graduate, so I know a lot
about finance, and I love fitness. The love
of my life and passion is lifting weights,
so I combined all these skills.
Do you sell your products in any
retail stores?
We don’t carry our products in any major
chain stores, but we would love to be in
Sports Authority or Dick's. As of now,
I have distributors in Australia, South
Africa, and Canada. There’s a couple

G-Loves. It’s a whole different animal
when you’re dealing with such a specific
product.
What is your favorite glove that you
have designed?
I love the Purple Rain glove. I named it
after the Prince song from the 1980’s.
How many times a week do you
work out?
Every day, twice a day, I make time to
work out. I work out for an hour in the
morning because I usually take a Pilates
class, and then at night I do cardio where
I run and lift weights for another 30-90
minutes, depending on how much energy
I have. I used to compete in shows, but I
can’t train anymore with my schedule for
work. I just try to eat every two hours. I
eat very healthy, clean, and drink a lot of
water.
What are some of your hobbies
when you aren’t working out?
I like painting. I paint with acrylic and
I like to paint mostly cartoon characters
and comic book stuff like He-Man and
the Masters of the Universe because it’s
all muscle men. I also like Spider-Man,
Superman, all the different comics. I also
draw with stencil and charcoal, but as far
as painting, I like to do more whimsical
stuff.
Are you working on any other
products to add to your line?
We recently added weightlifting belts
to the company. I just kind of feel that
I should stick with the niche that I have
because it’s doing really well.

irls can go through
several style phases
and at some point
in time, a major life
change. So let’s face
it, a new job or going
to college can call for
a serious closet revamp. Cliché spoke
with Hollywood’s Elite Stylist Kimberlee
Tokarz and asked a few questions about
how to rebuild your closet from scratch.
Read on for all the amazing tips she gave,
and have fun restyling your wardrobe!
BY EMMA DYER
Cliché: What would you say are
the three key concepts to consider
when building your wardrobe?
Kimberlee Tokarz: First: who are you,
and what is your style? A lot of people
like a lot of different looks and styles, but
narrowing that down to help you come up
with your style will definitely help you
figure out what is needed to complete or
start building your wardrobe.
	 Second: quality. Choose to buy
a quality piece (even if it means spending
a little more) rather than a bunch of cheap
items that will be out of style next season
or that will end up sitting in your closet
with tags for the next couple of years.
	 Third: be patient. A perfect
wardrobe doesn’t happen overnight, and
it’s never-ending. Don’t expect to find
everything at one store or in one day.
Take your time and figure out the right
pieces for you, your body, and your
lifestyle.
Why should you rebuild your
wardrobe?
Your wardrobe says a lot about who you
are, so if you’re not happy with how
you look and are dressing that way, it
can affect other areas of your life. When

you look good, you feel good, and you
do better! So, rebuilding your wardrobe
gives you the opportunity to create a
“new” or better you.
Should you change your wardrobe
once a year, or per season?
I think it’s smart to consistently work
on your wardrobe. Obviously budget is
always a concern, but it’s hard to put a
timelineonworkingonyourcloset.When
I rebuilt my wardrobe from the ground
up years ago, I chose to save a little out
of each paycheck I received. I set a goal
for myself, and once I reached that goal,
I went on a “shopping spree.” The only
reason I say this is because when you
feel stuck in a rut with your wardrobe,
buying an item here and there isn’t going
to help. Not to mention you’d probably
buy a new piece and then wear it out by
the time you bought the next new item,
so I highly recommend setting a goal and
going to get a few items together. Once
I did this, my basic foundation was built,
and then each season I look for the fun
items I can add!
Any pre-game tips to do before the
big task?
The first thing I do with my clients is
edit their current wardrobe. [You should]
get rid of pieces that are old, outdated,
or the pieces you never wear. Once you
do this, you’ll have a better idea of what
you have left and what you need to fill
in. If you know what your style is, then
it’ll be easier to go out and shop for
replacement items and/or new items that
work with your remaining pieces. If not,
I recommend doing some looking around
and figuring out what your look is and
who you are in fashion. That way, you
can look for items that will work for you
and your lifestyle.
What category of style should you
start with?
I would always start building with
neutrals, like a great-fitting and quality
pair of jeans, good-fitting neutral tops,
sweaters, jackets, shoes, etc. Once you
get this foundation, if you want to add
bold colors and prints, do it! But having
a solid foundation in your wardrobe will
make it easier to style and create different
looks with bolder colors and prints.
So, what do you hang and what do
you fold?
Most of this is dependent on each person,
but there are a few categories that should
be one or the other. You want to hang
blouses (button downs, silk, anything
that could be wrinkled easily), pants/
trousers, suits, skirts, dresses, jackets and
blazers, and coats. You can fold sweaters
(because a lot of times they grow if hung),
casual tees and tanks (but these can also
be hung if they’re nicer or if preferred),
and jeans. But it’s alright if you also want
to fold knits, skirts, or dresses.
What's the one item everyone
should have in their closet?
A great-fitting pair of jeans. Most people
live in jeans and most people don’t see
the benefit of having a great-fitting and
quality pair of jeans. This is so important
because not only will they last, but they
work well with almost anything else in
your closet. They’re insanely versatile in
season, style, day or evening.
How many shoes does a girl really
need?
That depends. For example, I’m on my
feet all day long, I buy quality pieces,
and I’m super picky, so I only have
about 15 pairs of great “perfect” shoes.
But I also have clients and friends that
work in different environments and have
certain events that would require them
to have a wider variety. With that being
said, depending on your budget, I think
as long as you focus on quality and not
quantity, you can go crazy!
Should we avoid statement pieces
or add them?
If you have your wardrobe foundation,
then there’s nothing wrong with cycling
in a few statement pieces. Again, this
also depends on your budget and what
your lifestyle is. If you are trying to
rebuild your wardrobe from the ground
up, wait on the trendy pieces and focus
on what you really need first.

With the arrival

Impala.
	 We received seven nail polishes
from Impala: a light creamy blue called
Marina, a pearly purple/grey color called
Água Viva, a grey color called Crochê,
a pearly mint green color called Sea

pearly pink color called Pérola do Mar,
and a clear nail oil called Óleo Secante.
The pearly colored nail polishes are part
of the Cores do Oceano (Colors of the

wonderful colors off with a coat of Óleo

they make us want to lay out in the hot

we love the dazzling pearl effect it left on

ilq and Honey
House of Fash-
ion, Health and
Beauty caters to
inner beauty and
outer beauty. The
Davids sisters
opened the beauty spa, health kitchen,
and clothing boutique to empower wom-
en by making them feel beautiful and
promote a healthy lifestyle. Gabriella and
Kelly Davids live by the philosophy of,
“Keep dreaming and dream big. It does
come true!” Cliché caught up with the
sisters to discuss their new SS14 collec-
tion and Africa-Malaysia Fashion Week.
BY CHEYENNE PROSPER
Cliché: What inspired you to start
Milq and Honey?
Kelly Davids: Milq and Honey
House of Fashion, Health and Beauty
is a reflection of our lifestyle and taste
for life. When our late mother Tamara
Davids passed away three years ago,
she inspired us to make sure we live life
to the fullest and follow our passion.
Gabriella Davids, the managing director,
is a former international model and
was featured in campaigns for major
companies and brands all around the
world. I am the creative director, and I
fell in love with fashion design when I
bought my first sewing machine and
started making my own clothing. We
are both vegetarians and only use 100%
organic products.
Milq and Honey is a spa, organic
kitchen, and clothing line. How do
you juggle all three?
Gabriella heads the beauty spa and
organic kitchen and has the most amazing
team that she works with. I head the
fashion with my beautiful and creative
team. However, Gabriella and I come
together when it comes to any decision
making in the beauty, health, and fashion
department. Gabriella and I jumped into
the deep end of the sea with regards to
starting a business and managing people.
Two years later, we still learn every day
and every second! We are so grateful
for our father, Gerald Davids, who is a
successful business man
who guides and walks with us every step
of the way.
Milq and Honey is centered around
celebrating women. How does
your clothing encourage women?
When I create and design any garment,
I have a healthy and confident female’s
body, silhouette, and form in mind. I
design for confident and healthy women
simply because that’s what I want to
promote and encourage. Our garments
are made of bold patterns and colors,
and you have to be confident in order to
wear it. There is nothing sexier than a
confident, healthy woman.
What was the inspiration behind
your SS14 collection?
When we create a collection, my sister
and I do our research on location. For
our SS14 collection, we were inspired
by Morocco. We explored
and drew inspiration from the
markets, the architecture, the
cultures, the flora and fauna,
the tastes and smells.
Why do you think it is
important to have a fashion
show that showcases
African and Malaysian
fashion?
I feel that the world’s eyes focus
on European and American
designers as the trendsetters
in fashion. By encouraging
and showcasing African
and Malaysian designers,
we promote and expose the
amazing talent that we have
and by doing so, trends are set
by us.

ina Lobondi is
a London-based
Congolese designer
who established her
eponymous clothing
line in 2011. Lobondi’s
designs exude classic
style with unique accents from her rich
heritage. Cliché chatted with the budding
designer about her AW14 collection,
Heritage, and her upcoming appearance
in Africa-Malaysia Fashion Week. BY
CHEYENNE PROSPER
Cliché: What influenced you to
become a fashion designer?
Tina Lobondi: I have always made
a lot of drawings. I wanted a job that
allowed me to express my creativity, so
fashion designer was my first option.
How is Congolese culture reflected
in your designs?
My designs are inspired by the fashions
I used to see when living in Congo. The
women in my family were very stylish
and feminine.
Why do you think it is important
to display African fashion on an
international platform?
It is important to display all kinds of
fashion on an international platform.
Any art deserves to be seen and Africa
has a lot to show the world.
What was the inspiration behind
your AW14 collection?
I wanted to create a collection inspired
by my mother and what I remember of
her. She used to like red and wore very
trendy clothes. This collection is called
Heritage in reference to what she taught
me.
What are you looking forward to in
the Africa-Malaysia fashion show?
I look forward to the event to be grand
with a lot of exposure and I hope that it
will have a big impact for the designers
attending. I want to know more about
Malaysian culture and the fusion it can
have with Africa.

hat is the first thing that comes to mind when
you think of summer? Probably the beach
(hopefully somewhere tropic, with palm
trees, crystal-clear water, and fruity cocktails
with little umbrellas). And what does one do
at the beach? Tan. Although we all want to be
bronzed goddesses, we know that overexpo-
sure to the sun’s harsh UV rays can cause more damage than beauty.
Fret not, though, my fellow tan junkies, for there is a solution: self-
tanners. Before you worry about orange fake ‘n bake and stubborn
streaks, check out these self-tanners that will make you think twice
about skipping the sunscreen for the sake of a sizzling tan.
BY AMANDA CURRAN
GET GLOWING
If you’re new to this self-tanning trend, you might want to start off
slow and steady with Jergens’ Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer.
This mild moisturizer gives you a subtle glow that develops over
time, gradually adjusting a perfect tan to your skin without a discol-
ored, patchy mess. This product’s varying formulas give you options
that include firming, hydrating, and revitalizing benefits, all while
providing a perfect dose of sun-kissed radiance.
THE RICHER, THE BETTER
For the daring few who desire a rich, deep tan, Vita Liberata’s Dark
Tan Lotion will quench your skin’s thirst—literally. This tanning
lotion comes in a decadently hydrating formula that nourishes skin
while infusing it with silky, dense pigment. Using cutting-edge tech-
nology, this product guarantees 2 to 3 weeks of color that mimics the
reddish-bronze hue of a natural tan without the baking heat.
GO BRONZE
St. Tropez have staked their claim on the self-tanning market and
may have struck gold with their Self-Tan Bronzing Mousse. This
luxe mousse has a light, airy texture that blends into skin with mini-
mal effort and gives the ultimate golden tan. The streak-free formula
sets into skin in just 60 seconds, making the application process quick
and easy. After four (or more) hours, rinse the product off to reveal a
dazzling glow that will last up to two weeks and fade naturally, just
like a real tan.

SWAP ‘TIL
YOU DROP
wapping your clothes
is an inexpensive and
eco-friendly way to
revamp your wardrobe,
so imagine a whole
website dedicated to
exactly this! Swapdom
makes swapping simple and easy to
use by creating group swaps that allow
individuals to get the perfect item they
want. This multi-person sharing site is
leading the way in online swapping by
expanding to include gear for even babies
and kids. Below, Cliché caught up with
Swapdom’s CEO and co-founder Petros
Georgopoulos about his ever-growing
(and genius) business. BY CHEYENNE
PROSPER
©Swapdom
Cliché: So, what exactly is
Swapdom?
Petros Georgopoulos: Swapdom
is an efficient tool that finds multi-
party swaps. Our algorithm is a vital
component for peer-to-peer exchange.
We firmly believe that the sharing
economy is our home, a space to develop
peer exchange environments for physical
goods. You simply post items you’d like
to trade, then you browse for items you’d
like to receive in exchange. Then the
Swapdom algorithm does its magic to
figure out a loop where everyone gets an
item they’ve requested.
How did you come up with the idea
for a swapping marketplace?
I realized that the classic form of
swapping, where two swappers attempt
to exchange items with one another, is
rather inefficient as the chances of each
person wanting what the other one is
offering at the time are rather slim; sizes
differ, tastes differ. Moreover, even if
they find two items to exchange, the two
swappers enter a bargaining situation
where they have to mutually agree
that it is a fair exchange. Swapdom is
unique in featuring multi-way swapping,
and changes your perception of what
swapping is. It is a fundamentally
different experience.
You recently launched a baby
section on Swapdom. Why is
Swapdom more convenient
for parents to use instead of
purchasing new items at a store?
Parents spend thousands of dollars on
things their kids outgrow quickly. With
Swapdom, they can trade gear their kids
have already outgrown in exchange for
items they need, or even exchange kids'
gear items for fashion or home finds.
What encouraged a baby and kids
platform to be added to Swapdom?
We added the kids' gear and (very
recently) home marketplaces because we
listenedtoourusers.Ourresearchshowed
a high demand for these marketplaces, so
we decided to dive right in.
The fashion industry has made
steps to be more eco-friendly.
How does Swapdom contribute
to environmentally friendly
practices?
Swapdom's fashion marketplace helps
to reduce textile waste by finding new
homes for unwanted fashion items, and
it now does the same for baby and kids'
gear and home goods as well.
Where do you see Swapdom in
five years?
We hope to be a leader in the sharing
economy movement and plan to have
many marketplaces available. Our app
will be launched very soon, and in five
years' time, when people think of peer-
to-peer exchange, we want them to think
of Swapdom.

he beach is not every-
one’s cup of tea—the
scent of saltwater,
the constant call of
seagulls, and sand
sticking to just about
every part of your skin—but many of us
beauty fans can agree that we love those
sexy, tousled waves the beach gives us,
especially when they last for days. While
textured waves are styled naturally by
saltwater and the overall beach atmo-
sphere, there are some tricks to getting
this look without the trip to the shore.
Sea salt products can help you create
beautiful beach-inspired hair right at
home. BY VICTORIA OLMO
Scrunch and Air-Dry
An easy method that you can do right
after you have washed your hair, the
scrunch and air-dry technique takes sec-
onds to do. Flip your damp hair forward,
and then scrunch it with your hands.
Since you’re starting with wet hair,
you’ll achieve a longer more textured
finished hairstyle. Using a few sprays
of Sexy Hair’s Healthy Sexy Hair Soy
Renewal Beach Spray can help your
hair form even more waves! With ingre-
dients like sea salt and algae extract, this
product, once it’s set into your locks, will
make those beachy waves appear like
magic. All you have to do is let your hair
air dry naturally.
Overnight Braids
A safe way to create tighter waves or
curls without using harsh heat is with
braids. Before you go to bed, or while
you are getting ready to go out, tightly
braid your hair into a few sections. Ei-
ther leave them in for a couple of hours
or the entire night while you’re sleeping,
and then let the braids loose. You’ll have
gorgeous tight curls! If you desire looser
waves, simply run your fingers through
your hair to soften the style. Adding
one of our favorite sea salt products Not
Your Mother’s Beach Babe Textur-
izing Sea Salt Spray to your hair will
make that sexy and tousled look even
easier to achieve!
Quick Updos
A great benefit to a beachy hairstyle is
that you can do just about anything with
it, including updos. Slick it back into a
trendy low-pony by brushing back all of
your hair and securing it with an elastic,
and show those waves off from behind.
Or style it into a thick braid, letting some
pieces stick out for a chic, messy look.
To keep your hair out of the way, throw
it up into a tousled, textured bun. The
choice is up to you!

Cliché: What inspired this collection?
Angie Kim, Maggie Kim, and
Mandalyn Begay: We were inspired by
a few different elements. One was old
school candy that we all love to eat late
at night while working, things like Fun
Dip, Nerds, Lemon Heads, and Starbursts
from when we were kids. We were also
inspired by the circus and some of the
darker, dreamier elements. Lastly, we
were inspired by the trio of books Sabriel,
Liriel, and Abhorsen by Garth Nix about
a necromancer who can raise the dead by
playing a bandolier of bells.
What are some favorite pieces?
We love the Forgotten Kisses meringue
dress (the white asymmetrical dress), and
the bubblegum pink frothy dress.
What do you hope for in this
collection?
We hope it brings a smile to people’s faces,
and we hope they buy this collection.
Anything interesting you can tell
us about the collection or one of
the pieces that we wouldn’t know?
All of the colors were hand-dyed, usually
at least 5-6 times to get the colors
right, and often in small strips of fabric
individually dip-dyed or squeeze-dyed.
On the Forgotten Kisses meringue dress,
we burned over 100 yards of silk gauze to
get the “meringued” look on the edges of
the ruffles.
ust like a dream, the
pieces in the collection
will be gone before you
know it—they are only
available for a limited
time! So before this
dream slips away, take a
look at the collection, splurge a little, and
create a story all your own. Any of the
pieces can be purchased from Odafashion.

ith summer
finally here,
you’d think I’d
be out enjoying
the gorgeous
weather and
the break from
being indoors. However, being a true
entertainment junkie, I find myself still
glued to my electronics. Also, it doesn’t
help that I can watch TV, listen to music,
and read a book from my phone; let’s
just say that my face has yet to bask
in the light of day. Who needs healthy
social interaction anyway? Especially
when you can stay glued to a screen all
day (totally joking—go make friends).
Here’s what I currently have on rotation.
BY JENNIFER CASTRO
Listening To:
Bangerz by
Miley Cyrus
So we all know
Hannah Montana-
no-more has gone
clinically insane
circa Britney
Spears 2007. Still, despite how repulsed
I am by her new persona, I’m completely
obsessed with her Bangerz album—
though if you tell anyone, I’ll deny it.
It’s very rare that I find an album where I
like almost every single song, but believe
it or not, this is one of them. However,
this shouldn’t come as a surprise when
she’s been collaborating with artists
such as Will.i.Am and Pharrell. Album
highlights include fan-favorites like “We
Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball,” pretty
vocals like “Adore You” and “Drive,”
and of course finger-snapping beats like
“Hands in the Air” and “Someone Else”;
and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The
ill-fitting hairstyles, crazy antics, and
unbearable new personality might turn
you away from Miley, but there’s no
denying that this album rocks!
Reading: Brunette
Ambition by Lea
Michele
This shouldn’t come
as a surprise to our
readers. I love all
things Lea Michele.
In her debut novel—
which is both memoir
as well as a how-to for the young and
ambitious—we get to hear revealing
untold stories and never-before-seen
images of the multi-tasking starlet. From
beauty tips to fitness advice, Michele
describes this as “the book [she] wishes
she’d had in her teens and early twenties.”
I may have been newly inducted into my
late twenties, but that didn’t stop me
from pre-ordering my copy.
Playing: Yoshi’s
New Island for
Nintendo 3DS
If I told you that
I prepaid for this
game before its
release date just so
I could play it right
away, would you judge me? Call me a
#nerd if you will, but I have no regrets.
This is basically a “midquel” between the
original Super Mario 2: Yoshi’s Island
(SNES) and Yoshi’s Island (DS). It plays
much like its predecessor, with theYoshis
helping to reunite Baby Mario and his
kidnapped brother. What could be more
adorable than diapers and dinosaurs? I’ll
admit I still favor the original, but I’m
happy to get my fix of flutter jumps, egg-
tosses, and ground pounds.

Entertainment Director
JENNIFER CASTRO
shares the things she is
currently loving this summer.
Watching: Game of Thrones
(Seasons 1-4)
Despite all of my self-proclaimed
entertainment savviness, I will admit
that I am usually the last person to know
about a hit show (thank goodness for
Netflix and on-demand). So although
HBO’s Game of Thrones just wrapped
up its fourth season—and I’m sure it
was phenomenal—this late bloomer is
still waiting on Khaleesi’s dragon eggs
to hatch. Though I’m far behind and
social media has long-ago informed me
of some of the show’s major events,
there’s something fulfilling in watching
the storyline from the beginning and
at my own pace. Sure, I don’t have the
excruciating, albeit exciting experience
of waiting for the next episode week
after week, but I have literally hundreds
of hours of viewing pleasure at my
disposal! And so far, I’ve been as
enthralled as King Joffrey in a room full
of dead puppies.

A MAN WITH
MANY TALENTS
ay Ellis, who was born
in Fort Sumter, South
Carolina, began his
career as an international
print model. Since then
he has turned into one
of BET’s breakthrough
actors, starring as Bryce Blue Westbrook
in the television series The Game. He has
also been seen on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy,
the CW’s Heart of Dixie, and CBS’ How
I Met Your Mother. When this heart-
throbbing actor is not filming, he enjoys
playing basketball, cooking, playing guitar,
and staying fit. He is also an advocate for
community service, higher education, and
motivating youth to pursue a career in the
arts. Below we chat with Jay Ellis about
his role in The Game and the rest of his
rapidly growing career. BY JASMINE
MOUSTAFA
Cliché: Can you tell us a little bit
about this season of The Game
and where your character, Blue
Westbrook, is with his career and
love life?
Jay Ellis: He’s trying to figure it all out. Is
he in love or does he really see a future with
Kiera, and what would his life look like
without her? As for his career, I think he’s
focused on doing what it takes to perform
at his best on the field. He has also learned
to be a better teammate in order to be the
leader.
What can we look forward to in the
next season of The Game?
[Laughs] More drama as always. But I
hope we see these two (Kiera and Blue)
finish what they’ve started. And I hope
Blue wins a championship, but that’s the
athlete in me.
Can you easily relate to the
character?
I definitely think there is some relatability
(is that a word?) there. [Laughs] I
definitely can appreciate his passion for
success, winning, and love.
Where did your inspiration for
acting come from?
I love how powerful good acting can be.
It literally can change lives in a single
moment, and the effect storytelling has
had on me made me want to pursue acting.
Did you always know that you
wanted a career in acting?
Yeah. I think I was afraid to actually
pursue it for a long time though. It seemed
so hard and elusive, and I was afraid of
failure. But it’s something I wanted since
I was a kid.
When you’re not busy working
on set or at your pilates studios,
what are some of your hobbies and
favorite pastimes?
Surfing, hiking… and I love music. I’m
always trying to be a student of some
kind, especially of music, language, and
the world.

MAN'S WORLD | RAPHAEL SBARGE

RAPHAEL IN
THE FIRST
aphael Sbarge may not be a household name,
but he sure has captured a lot of hearts and
minds over the years in his many roles. He has
proven to be a man able to play a wide range
of characters, from a mad man in Criminal
Minds, Kaidan Alenko in the Mass Effect series, to the famous
conscience Jiminy Cricket in Once Upon A Time. With truly
a heart of gold, Sbarge shares his thoughts with us on past
and current projects, such as Green Wish and Murder In the
First. BY BRITTANY N. HUSKEY / PHOTOGRAPHED
BY LESLEY BRYCE
Cliché: Unfortunately, your character Jiminy Cricket
hasn’t been seen a lot this past season. What do
you think Jiminy has been doing in the missing year
no one can remember?
Raphael Sbarge: [Laughs] Probably trying to do a lot of
therapy with all residents of Storybrooke. I would imagine
that Jiminy/Archie was very busy.
Archie’s been transformed, physically, a number of
times throughout the series. How does he feel about
being flipped back and further so many times?
He has definitely been bounced around. Look, this is a huge
canvas, right? So, they have so many things that they have
to balance and I think they are trying to take care of a lot
of characters storylines at once. In trying to make sense of
Archie’s storyline, I love the fact that he became a Cricket
in order to try to do the right thing and find some penance
R
JUNE/JULY 2014 | 73
for something that he kind of did early on in his life and his
commitment with being a cricket, a therapist, and helping
Emma and Henry navigate having two mothers, which is
always hard for him.
I think that Archie has been Henry’s advocate and
champion. There’s a lot going on with him being a cricket then
a human, among various other things. I believe that Archie/
Jiminy, ultimately, is always there to do the right thing. I believe
that he has with Regina. You know she is both frightening, on
the one hand because of how she is, and on the other hand he
notices that perhaps with her being shown and given the right
kind of care she would be able to move in the right path. So,
he’s been there to be kind of the people’s champion in their
journeys. But his main connection has always been with Henry
and I think that is where he really shines, where I hope he does
the most good.
Besides being in Once Upon A Time, you will also be
appearing in Murder in the First, a crime- and trial-
based show. How is this show going to be different
from say Law Order?
Murder in the First is airing now on Monday nights at 10/9c on
TNT. I have been doing it concurrently with Once Upon A Time
and I am a regular on the show. It is a Steven Bochco series.
He is sort of permanent writer and executive producer in the
form of television that is more procedural and cop driven, such
NYPD Blue and other icons in the television universe.
He has conceived, with a new young writer by the
name of Eric Lodal, a case that takes place over the season. So,
it’s one case that we travel with throughout the whole season.
He has this incredible cast which is Kathleen Robertson, Tom
Felton, James Cromwell, Richard Schiff, and Steven Weber.
It’s just an astonishing cast. Steven Bochco has given us all this
wonderful opportunity as explorers, as opposed to doing the
whole thing in one episode, to do this in over ten episodes. It’s
kind of like a long movie.
So, you get to play this detective named Molk assigned
to the case. How different is his character from Jiminy?
I play a single dad, divorced, who’s dealing with the pressures
of being a civil servant. So, in this case, do I think that Archie
could help Molk?Yeah, sure. I think that we could all use a good
therapist and someone to talk to. Who doesn’t want someone to
talk to? But it is a very different universe. I have gone from the
fantasy and magical universe of Once Upon A Time to the gritty
reality for a cop show set in San Francisco. It’s a big arc, but as
an actor it’s so wonderful to be able to do different things. I did
so much work before Once Upon A Time and I will do so much
after it. I love being a part of that show, but I am always excited
about the variety of things that come my way.
Speaking of the variety of things that come your way,
you are also involved with Green Wish, a nonprofit that
you helped build and support. Can you tell us a little
about why you helped to start this program?
Basically the reason I started Green Wish was in regard to
being a parent. My daughter Gracie was born and it’s a magical
moment when you are handed your child. You feel connected
with everything, sort of one with the world in that moment, and
yet at the same time you feel how vulnerable to what the world
will bring. I had this profound sense of looking around the
world and sensing some real concern for what is happening in
the world. It’s pretty intense from the callossing bee population
to ice melting and dropping off into the ocean, and so further.
There’s so much going on.
I, in a desire to make a difference, come up with an
idea, and approached Ed Begley Jr. about it, of creating this
umbrella organization that opposed to supporting one group,
because there is so much need out in the world, but the definition
are all local and green. For example, the chapter in LosAngeles:
we support earth, air, water, and sustainable education, but in
the various cities that are now opening chapters around the
country, we give them the tools to set up their nonprofit in
their area. For very little money, they elect their own board,
they get free banking from People’s Bank, and from there they
get access to all our resources. They then go out to their own
area and identify the local community-based nonprofits that
really need support. We give them fundraising tools, as well as
them finding their own, and 99 cents on the dollar goes right
back into their community. So, it’s community-based giving
program that goes to green, sustainable projects. We now
have chapters spurting up all over the country. As opposed to
stumbling around in the dark, this is a way of handing people a
lantern to shine a light to bring not only money, but awareness
to these community projects.

RENAISSANCE
WRITER©Elyse Bruce
homas D. Taylor is an
author who writes in
manygenres,including
horror, science fiction,
mainstream fiction,
and nonfiction. His
horror books force his characters
and his readers to descend into dark
underworlds and reemerge with moral
lessons learned. Two of his nonfiction
books dispel much of the ignorance and
misinformation about autism. His most
recent nonfiction book, Autism’s Politics
and Political Factions: A Commentary,
explains some of the differences between
the many warring factions of the autism
community. Cliché sat down to talk with
him about his most recent book and
more. BY GREG TRUTNER
Cliché: What inspired you to write
horror?
Thomas D. Taylor: A good part of my
childhood was spent watching creature
feature and Grade B horror movies on
TV. I also read a lot of horror books.
But I found faults with most of what I
was seeing. Movies and books rooted in
myth and legend seemed to have taken
liberties. “True” stories often turned out
to be factually incorrect, and “scary”
stories didn’t seem to scare.
Thus began my endeavors, first
to improve upon what others had written,
and eventually to produce all original
material. It is, of course, the original
material that I have published.
When you write your horror books,
is there any research you need to
do? If so, what kind?
Every story I write, every novella,
every novel, no matter what genre I
am writing in, requires research. For
a horror story to work for whoever’s
reading it, for example, a writer has to
convince the reader to suspend disbelief
so that the reader can come to believe
that something totally fictional, yet
absolutely terrifying, can happen to
them. The best way to do this is to make
sure that if you are writing about real
things, you get those things right. This is
because, aside from not being distracted
by inaccuracies, if readers can trust that
an author has the facts right about what
is real, they are willing to believe the
author might be telling the truth about

Daniel Wellington WD The story behind the Swedish watch brand Daniel Wellington begins with a trip half way around the globe where the founder, Filip Tysander, met an intriguing gentleman from the British Isles. The man had the inspiring ability to be gentlemanly but still relaxed and unpretentious. He had an impeccable style, and loved to wear his vintage watches on old weathered Nato straps. His name? Well, Daniel Wellington of course. The Daniel Wellington watch is suitable for every occasion and with its interchangable straps you can have a different watch for every day of the week. www.danielwellington.com

  • 24. | JUNE/JULY 201424 Contributors TERRY CHECK, a passionate but not too serious lover of art and fashion, travels the world to art openings and fashion shows always looking for a good story and a little fun. Whether it’s Art Basel in Miami or fashion week in Paris, he explores the collaboration of art and fashion from the 1920's to conceptual, sometimes understanding the work, and other times having no idea whether it’s fine art/fashion or child’s play. A native of upstate New York, he shares his perspective about contemporary art and fashion of emerging artists to industry icons. Multi-facetted as an artist/writer/photographer, his work is widely exhibited in the USA, represented by the Fay Gold Gallery and Chic – Evolution in Art, and is published in Mode Lifestyle, Fashion Xchange, Le Style and of course, Cliché. He says, “Let’s enjoy art and fashion together, gaining a better understanding of the artist’s message or dialogue with the viewer. Finding the message is sometimes difficult, and at times there is no message but our interpretation.” terry@clichemagvip.com GET TO KNOW OUR COLUMNISTS AND CONTRIBUTING WRITERS IN CLICHÉ MAGAZINE! • 26. xactly two years ago when I first became the new Editor in Chief of this magazine, I was putting this thing together at my kitchen table, collecting photographs from talented, generous photographers, and writing articles with a small group of friends at my university. Although I still sometimes work from my kitchen table, now I have a whole team backing me, lending their support, thoughts, and passions—and I couldn’t be more grateful. The day I launched my first issue, I had a small celebration at home—with a few drinks and a delicious cake—and I wished that, someday, this magazine would be where it is today. TocelebrateCliché’s5thbirthdayandthelong-awaited arrival of summer, I wanted this issue to be about fun—because what is fun anyway, if not doing something you love, something that makes you happy? I’d be the first person to defend the idea that you can have fun all by yourself—by reading an exciting book, putting together new outfits, practicing new hairstyles and makeup tricks, and the list goes on! And for those who crave the warmth of company and laughter, head to the beach this summer, go traveling, and share some of your favorite music with someone special. I encourage everyone to just do what they love this summer, and just have fun. The people I know will be having fun this summer include Ethan Thompson, former American Idol contestant, while he tours California to promote his debut EP (read my interview with him on pg. 134), our beautiful cover girls Serinda Swan (pg. 106) and Nicky Whelan (pg. 114) as they further their careers, and the ton of other musicians, actors, and artists we interviewed this issue. And we can’t forget our writers, who will reporting on their favorite summer findings and activities—both in this issue and on our blog—as well as soaking up some sun. More than anything, I hope this issue inspires you all to let loose and enjoy the summer. And as far as anniversaries go… here’s to many more. • 32. | JUNE/JULY 201432 ho doesn’t love those long summer days that are either spent at the amusement park, catching waves at the beach, lounging around the poolside, or just taking a road trip with friends? That all sounds great, but all that fun can leave your hair feeling brittle and frizzy. It happens all the time—we get ready to conquer the day and our hair is just the way we want it... until we take one step out the door and poof, we look like we just got electrocuted. We all know no matter how much hair spray we pile on and how long we take getting ready, the moment our hair meets the humidity, it’s over; yet we do it anyway in hope of a miracle. Well, there is hope. Below is a list of five great products that will help defeat the frizz. BY JASMINE MOUSTAFA Living Proof No Frizz Leave-In Conditioner This leave-in conditioner leaves hair looking healthy and rehydrated. It’s packed with Living Proof’s signature Healthy Hair Molecule that is said to be 70 percent better than other humidity- defying silicone and oil treatments. Another plus about this product is that it is sulfate-, silicone-, and oil-free. John Frieda Unwind Curls™ Calming Crème Most of the frizz tamers out on the market are made to work on straightened hair, but what if you just want to manage those curls? Look no further than John Frieda Unwind Curls™ Calming Crème. It loosens and smooths tight curls, leaving them feeling soft all day. OGX Ever Straight Brazilian Keratin Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner If you want to start managing frizzy hair while you’re in the shower, I suggest using OGX Ever Straight Brazilian Keratin Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner. Together they are designed to leave hair looking healthier, straighter, and frizz-free over time. If you love your curls and don’t want to go for that straightened look, this product still works wonders—just don’t flat-iron your hair afterwards. Bumble and bumble Defrizz This product is a really light serum that works great with fine hair and in just about any climate to manage curls, frizz, and flyaways. It leaves hair looking shiny and healthy. Just apply a few drops to damp hair and you’re ready to take on any weather headed your way. W Garnier Fructis™ Sleek Shine Intensely Smooth Leave-In Conditioning Cream This product contains argan oil which repairs and nourishes damaged hair, leaving it moisturized and feeling soft for up to 48 hours. It is said to stand up to 97 percent of humidity, so why not give it a chance? • 33. JUNE/JULY 2014 | 33 Beauty Director ELIZABETH MASCI shares her summer beauty picks! very month when I sit down to write this column, I think of reasons why that specific time of year is so amazing for beauty junkies. From finding red-hot lipstick shades for holiday parties, to picking out pastel nail polish shades for spring, there really is something I look forward to with each passing season of the year, especially when it comes to beauty products. But there’s something special to be said about summer. Maybe it’s the touch of sun-kissed skin, the natural highlights in my hair after a few days on the beach, or the fact that I can get away with Barbie pink lipstick for three months out of the year. In the spirit of my (maybe) favorite season, I’ve compiled a list of my go-to summer essentials—a “summer survival kit,” if you will. In the meantime, enjoy the sun, wherever you may be. Stay fabulous, always. XO, ELIZABETH Ocean Potion Sunscreen Need a sunscreen that goes above and beyond and smells amazing? Ocean Potion Sunscreen (Walmart, $6.67) has been my absolute favorite sunscreen for years. Their flawless formula includes sea plant botanicals, antioxidants, and tons of Vitamin D3 to keep your skin looking youthful and rejuvenated as you soak up the summer rays. Ocean Potion also features a non- greasy formula and Vitamin E to fight off free radicals, making it the perfect addition to your beach bag essentials. Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls I used to hate what the summer humidity did to my already frizzy hair, until I found Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls (Target, $22). This styling lotion promises frizz-free, soft and bouncy waves, without the crunchy curls we all try to avoid during the summer months. I love the soft hold of Miss Jessie’s and the fact that it works wonders both ways: air dry or with a diffuser. STILA Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner There’s nothing better than waterproof mascara, except for waterproof liquid eyeliner. I recently started using it this past spring when my watery, allergy- ridden eyes were messing up my eyeliner on a daily basis. STILA’s Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Liner (Sephora, $20) features a thin, marker-like tip that creates a smooth, smudge-free look with quick precision. The best part? The liner comes in fifteen different shades, including playful summer colors like Paradise Pink, Cobalt, Light Turquoise, and Periwinkle Blue. CND VINYLUX Polish VINYLUX is the next big thing in manicures, featuring week- long wear (really!), self-adhering color, and only two steps for faster service. Think of it as somewhere in between a regular mani and gel. It’s lighter and more convenient than gel but boasts more staying power than your run-of-the-mill mani. It’s perfect for people like me who like to change their polish color often, but need the durability of a gel manicure. Check out their website at cnd.com and find a CND salon near you! • 34. | JUNE/JULY 201434 THE BLONDE VEGAN here’s something special about Jordan Younger, a.k.a. The Blonde Vegan. Is it her bubbly, warm personality? Her relaxed, straight-off- the-Cali-beach mentality? Or maybe it’s her enviable, bi-coastal lifestyle. Okay, so it’s probably all that and more. But what we love most about Younger is her super approachable vibe and surprisingly accessible vegan blog. Unlike other health junkies on the web, Younger passes no judgement, and instead invites her followers to make food and health- related choices that are best for them and the lifestyle they want to live. From delectable recipes to restaurant reviews and updates on her yoga journey, The Blonde Vegan is the perfect hotspot for anyone interested in living a healthier lifestyle, whether you’re ready to make the vegan commitment or just want to dabble in healthy eating. We got the chance to sit down with Younger and talk about her blog, her health-driven lifestyle, and all things vegan. Thanks to her, we’ve realized that the vegan lifestyle is not so scary and can be totally delicious! We have a feeling you’ll think so, too. BY ELIZABETH MASCI T ©Tynan Daniels BEAUTY | BLONDE VEGAN JORDAN YOUNGER (and her vegan lifestyle blog) inspires us to live a healthier, happier life.
  • 35. JUNE/JULY 2014 | 35 IF YOU ARE MADLY PASSIONATE AND EXCITED ABOUT YOUR TOPIC, THAT WILL SHINE THROUGH IN YOUR WRITING AND YOUR READERS WILL LOVE IT. —JORDAN YOUNGER Cliché: How has your life changed since you decided to go vegan? Jordan Younger: My life has changed in so many positive ways since my decision to go vegan. The greatest change took place within me because, for the first time in my life, I am feeding myself with foods that do not bother my extremely sensitive stomach. I have lost weight and gained a ton of energy, but most importantly the stomach problems and migraines I had suffered from my entire life have disappeared. I am happier and more confident, and I have significantly less stress in my day- to-day life. It’s crazy how much food can stress you out if you aren’t eating the right foods for your body. I have also been given the wonderful gift of helping others transform their lifestyle through my blog, which has given me a new sense of purpose with veganism. Connecting with like-minded individuals and helping others find the healthiest version of themselves has become a huge part of my life, and without veganism, I wouldn’t have found any of that. What role does exercise play in your vegan lifestyle? Exercise plays a vital role in my vegan lifestyle. Without exercise, a healthy diet cannot fully do its job, just like without a healthy diet, exercise cannot really do its job. My fitness philosophy is similar to my food philosophy: find what works with your body, and then be consistent with it. I practice yoga every day because I am in love with the exercise, the yogic philosophy, and the way that it makes me feel. I also run anywhere from 3-5 days a week, I swim and bike in the summertime, and I am a pretty huge Soul Cycle fan. When you eat well, there is no excuse not to be active, and you will probably find that you end up falling in love with it! The two go hand in hand. What is your biggest challenge when it comes to your vegan diet, and how do you deal with it on a daily basis? The biggest challenge would have to be the social aspect. It’s hard to strike a balance between being that token vegan friend who can’t eat anything when you’re out and totally going with the flow and not mentioning your dietary restrictions. Because of the difficult nature of eating out on a plant-based vegan diet, I’ve had to make sure I am surrounded by very supportive people. Certain people get annoyed when you make a huge lifestyle change that doesn’t align with the way they live their life, and if it becomes an issue, I’ve had to learn to let some people go. Once you adopt veganism as a lifestyle and you get used to the changes that come along with it, the people in your life get used to it as well. Things that were challenging in the beginning are much easier now. Oh, and I’ve learned to plan ahead! I always bring snacks with me, especially if I know I am going to be in a situation where there is not going to be a whole lot for me to eat. What made you decide to blog about the lifestyle you’re choosing to live? I started an Instagram account to share my food photos when I first got really into vegan cooking. There was such an outpouring of support on Instagram, and my following grew pretty quickly. At a certain point it became apparent to me that I needed an outlet to share the recipes and to share tips and tricks that I had learned along the way by living a vegan lifestyle. That’s where the blog stemmed from, but it has evolved into so much more. Now I share quite a bit of my personal life on the blog, restaurant reviews, yoga details, QA’s with industry professionals, and my struggles with stomach problems. You name it— it’s on there. The blog has become such an incredible personal space for me. Not to mention, I love to write, so it ended up being a very natural fit! For many people, food is the centerpiece of their social life. How do you manage to keep your cool and maintain your vegan lifestyle without compromising your social life? It can definitely be a challenge. I’ve had to learn (through major trial and error) that going out to eat with friends is so much more about the company than about the food itself. It can kind of suck to be that girl who shows up and only orders water or a side salad with no dressing, but you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do and there’s no sense in paying for a meal that you’re not going to be able to enjoy. I have learned to plan ahead and eat beforehand if I know there isn’t going to be anything for me at a restaurant. But I have made it a big point to never allow my veganism to deter me from doing things with my friends. I go to all the same places with them that I would have gone before; I just steer clear of the food aspect! And I’ve also found that people are inclined to follow by example, so a lot of my friends have developed the “healthy bug” after watching my lifestyle transformation. That has been fun for me because I get to take them to healthy restaurants and try fun vegan or vegetarian spots with them. We like to do a trade off. If we go out to a nice “regular” restaurant one night, the next time they will try a healthier place with me. It’s all about finding a balance. How is your blog different from the slew of other foodie/health blogs, and what do you hope to do by journaling your experiences online? My blog is different in a few ways. First,
  • 36. | JUNE/JULY 201436 STAFF BEAUTY PICKS ere at Cliché, we have a tiny obsession with all things beauty. Okay, it’s more like a serious addiction. And while I might be the resident beauty junkie, I love getting cosmetic tips from my trusted colleagues. And let me tell you, they sure know their stuff when it comes to beauty and cosmetics. Below are staff picks for our all-time favorite summer-inspired products. BY ELIZABETH MASCI “My favorite summer beauty product is the Garnier Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream. It’s the perfect lightweight BB cream to use in the summer that helps control shine on your skin all day. It also has SPF 20 in it, which helps hydrate and protect your skin from the sun.” —Victoria Olmo, Fashion Beauty Writer ©Target I make it a huge priority to respond to each and every one of the comments and emails I receive. When people first realize that I do this, they are pretty blown away. I receive several hundred emails per day and usually even more comments. I think that the purpose of a blog is all about the interaction and the communicative aspects. I have never wanted to be closed off to my blog readers, and I always want them to know that I am available to answer their questions and help them reach their goals. I think that has something to do with the fact that my blog stemmed from my Instagram, which is such a personal space. I want my readers to feel like we are in conversation. Anything goes! Another way in which my blog is different is that it goes beyond the recipe creation. I discuss everything from my stomach issues and disordered eating struggles to posting interviews with my favorite authors and health bloggers. I try to make the vibe as community- oriented as possible. By journaling my experiences online, I hope to continue connecting with like-minded individuals and growing my brand. Eventually I would love to expand to the point where the blog will be my full-time job. I just launched my t-shirt line, I am in the process of creating an app, and ultimately I want to write a book. The blog is the home base for all of those projects and goals. What are your top three favorite super-foods? Cacao (total chocoholic over here), maca powder (energy boost!), and coconut shreds. I’m obsessed with all three. Anyadviceforaspiringbloggers? Blogaboutwhatyoulove, andyoucan’t go wrong. If you are madly passionate and excited about your topic, that will shine through in your writing and your readers will love it. Invest in a good camera, because photos are worth a million words on the internet. You can link the photos to Pinterest, Facebook, and Instagram and start driving traffic to your blog from those different outlets. And reach out to other people in the blogging community who are writing about similar things! • 37. JUNE/JULY 2014 | 37 “My favorite summer beauty product is NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer (I use the color ‘Martinique’). It’s my favorite foundation substitute for summer because it covers well, but allows my skin to breathe, and it doesn’t melt off my face! An added bonus: it’s SPF 30, so it protects my skin from skin-damaging UV rays.” —Meme Jackson, Newsletter Editor “Ever since last summer, I’ve been obsessed with Ouidad Wave Create Sea Spray. I love rocking the beachy wave look all summer long, and this product is perfect for creating a sexy, tousled look in no time.” —Elizabeth Masci, Beauty Director “After a long winter of sporting dark nails and nudes, I am eager to start wearing more cheerful and fun colors this summer. My current lacquers of choice are from Butter London, particularly the coral shade ‘MacBeth’ (for the English major in me) and the orangey ‘Sunbaker’ (because, well, obviously).” —Megan Portorreal, Editor in Chief “My favorite summer beauty pick is Neutrogena’s Shine Control Primer (the liquid one). It is an affordable primer that keeps my face shine-free and my makeup fresh, even on those wild summer nights! —Valerie Oppelaar, Web Editor “Nars Lovejoy Blush: this gorgeous shimmer blush is absolutely perfect for any skin tone, especially in the summer! While you work on your tan, this coppery rose hue will accentuate any bronze tints you’ve picked up from the sunshine. Say hello to skin that glows!” —Jennifer Castro, Entertainment Director “I’m obsessed with Fig+Yarrow’s Body Scrubs, so when summer comes around, I make sure to restock on their Sea Scrub. • 38. | JUNE/JULY 201438 Contributing Beauty Columnist STACEY CAMACHO recreates these stunning celebrity looks that are perfect for summer! GETTHE LOOK: Lucy Hale Face Mattify the complexion with a foundation brush and HOURGLASS Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation, as the complexion is matte. Eyes Keep the eyes simple by applying mascara on the top and bottom lashes, more so on the top to curl and lengthen them. Applying a lighter eye shadow, such as champagne, on the inner corner of the eyes will cause them to open right up, so they look awake, as well as make them pop. Top it off with eyeliner by applying it on the upper lash line and the bottom line, but only apply it at the outer corner of the eye. With an eye liner or angle brush smudge the pencil eye liner on the bottom lash line three quarters, continue to line the eyes to the inner corner lightly, so it’s subtle. For lasting application, set it with talc-free powder. As for the brows, well, it isn’t something to forget, as it's just as important as all the other features. With an angled brush, apply brow powder on the arch, working your way to the tip. Lastly, with a little brow powder left on the brush, fill in the inner brow that is near the inner eye. Powder is much more natural than pencil, and it also prolongs the makeup. Lips Take your matte coral red lipstick and lip brush and apply the formula to the centre of your lips, working your way to the edges. For a more intensifying look, apply the lipstick directly to the centre of your lips, working your way to the edges by using the tip of the lipstick. Line your lips after the application with the exact same color of the lipstick or, with a powder foundation, tap it at the lip line to ensure bleeding does not occur. ©GaryMiller/GettyImages HOURGLASS IMMACULATE Liquid Powder Foundation, $55 hourglasscosmetics.com OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE Cosmetic Color Pencils, $16 occmakeup.com CHANEL SUBLIME de Chanel in 10 Deep Black chanel.com BITE BEAUTY Luminous Crème Lipstick, $24 bitebeauty.com ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS Brow Powder Duo, $23 anastasia.net
  • 39. JUNE/JULY 2014 | 39 Eyes Keep the eye makeup simple by applying a brown eye shadow to define the eyes. Silver eye shadow applied in the inner corners of the eyes will make them pop, as well as make tired eyes appear awake. Next, line the eyes with eyeliner, preferably powder eyeliner (black eye shadow) that can be used wet or dry. To intensify the black eye shadow, place the angled brush that already has product on it into a damp paper towel, remembering to always remove any excess product onto a dry paper towel before applying your makeup. Lastly, line your eyes; be sure to line them at the lash line top and bottom. Powder prolongs the BENEFIT COSMETICS Brow Zings, $32 benefitcosmetics.com application. Last is mascara, and because it is summer, waterproof mascara would be best to use. For clump-free lashes, wipe off any excess product onto a paper towel and apply in a zigzag motion. Don’t forget the eyebrows; they must be filled in. With an angled brush, apply brow powder on the arch, working your way to the tip. Then, with a little brow powder left on the brush, fill in the inner brow that is near the inner eye. Remember: powder is much more natural than pencil, and it prolongs the makeup. Cheeks A light sweep of light pink blush is needed upon the cheekbones. Smile so you see your cheekbones, and then apply the blush from the apples of your cheeks to your hairline. Lips Take your matte fuchsia lipstick and lip brush; apply the formula to the centre of your lips, working your way to the edges. • 41. JUNE/JULY 2014 | 41 Melt-Proof Must-Haves e have been wait- ing all year for brilliant sunshine and enviable tan lines, but with summer comes heat—and a lot of it. The rising temperature is a welcome warmth when you’re lounging poolside or lapping through the ocean, but when you’re standing on line at Starbucks dur- ing your lunch break in the middle of July and can almost feel your makeup drip- ping from your face, the sticky heat is not welcome. Luckily for you, before the escalating weather can ruin your make- up, we’ve compiled a list of melt-proof must-haves to get you through the sum- mer in style! BY AMANDA CURRAN CAMERA READY When it’s 90 degrees and the sun is shin- ing a little too bright, you don’t want to clog your pores with a mask of founda- tion. Instead, opt for something lighter, like the Smashbox Camera Ready CC Cream. This all-star product packs a powerful punch as it protects your skin from the sun with SPF 30. It also primes your skin and smooths over large pores and uneven texture while hydrating and color-correcting (hence why it’s called CC cream) any dark spots or post-acne marks. Because the cream is so light- weight, it will feel less like makeup and more like skin, all while still offer- ing sheer to medium flawless coverage! GO WATERPROOF Looking like a raccoon will never be trendy, which is why we suggest invest- ing in a good waterproof eyeliner that won’t bleed halfway through the day and give you runny, inky circles around your eyes. The Sephora Collection Con- tour Eye Pencil offers 12 hours of wear that will not budge or smudge, even while you’re sweating it out in the summer heat. These pencils come in an array of col- ors with dense pigmentation that will allow you to play up your eyes without having to worry about the mess later. PRIME TIME The key to keeping makeup on your face is primer, and a good one at that. Benefit Cosmetics has struck gold with their Stay Flawless 15 Hour Primer. Unlike most primers that come in a tube or a jar, this fool-proof formula comes in a stick that can be applied directly to W the face and worked into the skin with your fingers. A couple swipes of this primer will protect the natural oils of your skin (and sweat) from breaking down your makeup, giving you flaw- less skin for up to 15 fabulous hours. CRAZY FOR COCONUT What goes good with a tan? A healthy flush. Josie Maran’s Coconut Water CheekGeléesarecream/gelhybridblush- es that give your sun-kissed face a natu- ral pinch of color. Made of coconut water and infused with argan oil, these blushes are applied like a gel and dry like a stain, infusing rich pigment and hydration into the skin to give a long-lasting flush that won’t disappear under the summer sun. ©Sephora BEAUTY | MAKEUP
  • 42. | JUNE/JULY 201442 hile it is true that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, lingerie is a very close second, and perhaps Galina Sheveleva, the creator of GSintimates, would agree. The Canadian designer has always found herself interested in beautiful, luxurious fabrics and uses silk and lace respectively in all her designs. From dainty, creamy white babydoll nightgowns and silk shorts to ultra- feminine sleep masks and stockings, there’s something to fit every girl’s taste, style, and fantasy. Below we chat with Sheveleva about her designing process, her favorite pieces from her shop, and even better things to come. BY MEGAN PORTORREAL W BEAUTY SLEEPCliché: When did you realize you wanted to open a lingerie boutique? Galina Sheveleva: I have been making garments here and there for years now. However, I started to play with the idea of opening my lingerie boutique last summer and within a few weeks, I had fully undertaken that initiative. What is your designing process like? I always carry a notebook with me because it is often in the weirdest places and situations that an idea hits me, and if I don’t sketch it, I will forget it. Once I have many designs in my notebook, I pick which ones I want to play around with and make samples of. I buy different fabrics and do several versions of the garments, noting which ones work best. Which piece from the collection is your favorite? I’ll cheat a little bit and give you two. One is the golden sleep mask. Why? Because it’s a great sleep accessory. It is very soft and comfortable, looks amazing, and is fully functional. The other one would have to be the silk slip. The fabric is a silk satin, which feels wonderful against your skin. When I put it on, I feel like a movie star from the 60’s, pampered and gorgeous at the same time. Have you ever wanted to design other types of clothing? I definitely want to expand my brand in the future and design all kinds of garments. My inspiration is not limited to lingerie and sleepwear. What can we look forward to from GSintimates in the near future? More diverse lingerie and sleepwear collections. Also more creative designs, more assortments of garments, and a more interactive online store. • 45. JUNE/JULY 2014 | 4545 ounder and President of G-Loves Hedda Royce is the real Superwoman to ladies in the world of fitness. This Connecticut native and Business School graduate followed her dreams in creating women’s workout gloves that fit properly and look great. This certified personal trainer accredited by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) has the brains, strength, and looks. From Los Angeles, Royce talks to us about her determination for her business, her passion for weightlifting, and her joy of drawing comics. BY TATIANA STEC Cliché: You graduated from Tufts University in Massachusetts. Are you from the area? Hedda Royce: I was born in Connecticut, but I went to Massachusetts for college and I worked in investment banking after I graduated. I actually moved back to Connecticut when I went to Business School to get my MBA. How did you get the idea to start G-Loves? After I received my MBA, I didn’t feel like I was inspired by anybody that I met or any companies. I’ve been dreaming about the gloves since I was 10 years old because I played tennis and started lifting weights to balance my body. When you play tennis, you use your dominant hand when you hit the ball, so one half of your body gets developed and the other half doesn’t. I was introduced to a weightlifting program and that’s when I fell in love with it. I was always looking for gloves because my hands were so tiny and small, and I could never find anything that worked. I kept talking about it over the years as I lifted weights: “Why can’t anyone make gloves? Why can’t anyone do this business?” So I just decided, you know what, that’s it, I’m going to do it! Up until I made gloves, I really felt like the women’s gloves that were made were basically men’s gloves cut smaller. Women’s hands are much more narrow, I think they just used men’s gloves and scaled them down instead of making them thinner around the width of the hand. G-Loves is such a cute and slick name. How did you come up with it? Oh my god—many years ago, when I was maybe 15 or 16, I thought, “If I made my own gloves, I’d call them G-Loves.” The glove idea was something that I abandoned, then came back to. I would always work out and think of it, and then I decided to fuse all my passions together. I’m a business graduate, so I know a lot about finance, and I love fitness. The love of my life and passion is lifting weights, so I combined all these skills. Do you sell your products in any retail stores? We don’t carry our products in any major chain stores, but we would love to be in Sports Authority or Dick's. As of now, I have distributors in Australia, South Africa, and Canada. There’s a couple little gyms in Los Angeles that carry them and there are boutiques around the country in North Carolina, Florida, and Iowa that found me and wanted to carry G-Loves. It’s a whole different animal when you’re dealing with such a specific product. What is your favorite glove that you have designed? I love the Purple Rain glove. I named it after the Prince song from the 1980’s. How many times a week do you work out? Every day, twice a day, I make time to work out. I work out for an hour in the morning because I usually take a Pilates class, and then at night I do cardio where I run and lift weights for another 30-90 minutes, depending on how much energy I have. I used to compete in shows, but I can’t train anymore with my schedule for work. I just try to eat every two hours. I eat very healthy, clean, and drink a lot of water. What are some of your hobbies when you aren’t working out? I like painting. I paint with acrylic and I like to paint mostly cartoon characters and comic book stuff like He-Man and the Masters of the Universe because it’s all muscle men. I also like Spider-Man, Superman, all the different comics. I also draw with stencil and charcoal, but as far as painting, I like to do more whimsical stuff. Are you working on any other products to add to your line? We recently added weightlifting belts to the company. I just kind of feel that I should stick with the niche that I have because it’s doing really well. F ONE TOUGH COOKIE ©G-Loves ©G-Loves FASHION | G-LOVES

  • 54. | JUNE/JULY 201454 irls can go through several style phases and at some point in time, a major life change. So let’s face it, a new job or going to college can call for a serious closet revamp. Cliché spoke with Hollywood’s Elite Stylist Kimberlee Tokarz and asked a few questions about how to rebuild your closet from scratch. Read on for all the amazing tips she gave, and have fun restyling your wardrobe! BY EMMA DYER Cliché: What would you say are the three key concepts to consider when building your wardrobe? Kimberlee Tokarz: First: who are you, and what is your style? A lot of people like a lot of different looks and styles, but narrowing that down to help you come up with your style will definitely help you figure out what is needed to complete or start building your wardrobe. Second: quality. Choose to buy a quality piece (even if it means spending a little more) rather than a bunch of cheap items that will be out of style next season or that will end up sitting in your closet with tags for the next couple of years. Third: be patient. A perfect wardrobe doesn’t happen overnight, and it’s never-ending. Don’t expect to find everything at one store or in one day. Take your time and figure out the right pieces for you, your body, and your lifestyle. Why should you rebuild your wardrobe? Your wardrobe says a lot about who you are, so if you’re not happy with how you look and are dressing that way, it can affect other areas of your life. • 55. JUNE/JULY 2014 | 55 you look good, you feel good, and you do better! So, rebuilding your wardrobe gives you the opportunity to create a “new” or better you. Should you change your wardrobe once a year, or per season? I think it’s smart to consistently work on your wardrobe. Obviously budget is always a concern, but it’s hard to put a timelineonworkingonyourcloset. When I rebuilt my wardrobe from the ground up years ago, I chose to save a little out of each paycheck I received. I set a goal for myself, and once I reached that goal, I went on a “shopping spree.” The only reason I say this is because when you feel stuck in a rut with your wardrobe, buying an item here and there isn’t going to help. Not to mention you’d probably buy a new piece and then wear it out by the time you bought the next new item, so I highly recommend setting a goal and going to get a few items together. Once I did this, my basic foundation was built, and then each season I look for the fun items I can add! Any pre-game tips to do before the big task? The first thing I do with my clients is edit their current wardrobe. [You should] get rid of pieces that are old, outdated, or the pieces you never wear. Once you do this, you’ll have a better idea of what you have left and what you need to fill in. If you know what your style is, then it’ll be easier to go out and shop for replacement items and/or new items that work with your remaining pieces. If not, I recommend doing some looking around and figuring out what your look is and who you are in fashion. That way, you can look for items that will work for you and your lifestyle. What category of style should you start with? I would always start building with neutrals, like a great-fitting and quality pair of jeans, good-fitting neutral tops, sweaters, jackets, shoes, etc. Once you get this foundation, if you want to add bold colors and prints, do it! But having a solid foundation in your wardrobe will make it easier to style and create different looks with bolder colors and prints. So, what do you hang and what do you fold? Most of this is dependent on each person, but there are a few categories that should be one or the other. You want to hang blouses (button downs, silk, anything that could be wrinkled easily), pants/ trousers, suits, skirts, dresses, jackets and blazers, and coats. You can fold sweaters (because a lot of times they grow if hung), casual tees and tanks (but these can also be hung if they’re nicer or if preferred), and jeans. But it’s alright if you also want to fold knits, skirts, or dresses. What's the one item everyone should have in their closet? A great-fitting pair of jeans. Most people live in jeans and most people don’t see the benefit of having a great-fitting and quality pair of jeans. This is so important because not only will they last, but they work well with almost anything else in your closet. They’re insanely versatile in season, style, day or evening. How many shoes does a girl really need? That depends. For example, I’m on my feet all day long, I buy quality pieces, and I’m super picky, so I only have about 15 pairs of great “perfect” shoes. But I also have clients and friends that work in different environments and have certain events that would require them to have a wider variety. With that being said, depending on your budget, I think as long as you focus on quality and not quantity, you can go crazy! Should we avoid statement pieces or add them? If you have your wardrobe foundation, then there’s nothing wrong with cycling in a few statement pieces. Again, this also depends on your budget and what your lifestyle is. If you are trying to rebuild your wardrobe from the ground up, wait on the trendy pieces and focus on what you really need first. The Davids sisters opened the beauty spa, health kitchen, and clothing boutique to empower wom- en by making them feel beautiful and promote a healthy lifestyle. Gabriella and Kelly Davids live by the philosophy of, “Keep dreaming and dream big. It does come true!” Cliché caught up with the sisters to discuss their new SS14 collec- tion and Africa-Malaysia Fashion Week. BY CHEYENNE PROSPER Cliché: What inspired you to start Milq and Honey? Kelly Davids: Milq and Honey House of Fashion, Health and Beauty is a reflection of our lifestyle and taste for life. When our late mother Tamara Davids passed away three years ago, she inspired us to make sure we live life to the fullest and follow our passion. Gabriella Davids, the managing director, is a former international model and was featured in campaigns for major companies and brands all around the world. I am the creative director, and I fell in love with fashion design when I bought my first sewing machine and started making my own clothing. We are both vegetarians and only use 100% organic products. Milq and Honey is a spa, organic kitchen, and clothing line. How do you juggle all three? Gabriella heads the beauty spa and organic kitchen and has the most amazing team that she works with. I head the fashion with my beautiful and creative team. However, Gabriella and I come together when it comes to any decision making in the beauty, health, and fashion department. Gabriella and I jumped into the deep end of the sea with regards to starting a business and managing people. Two years later, we still learn every day and every second! We are so grateful for our father, Gerald Davids, who is a successful business man who guides and walks with us every step of the way. Milq and Honey is centered around celebrating women. How does your clothing encourage women? When I create and design any garment, I have a healthy and confident female’s body, silhouette, and form in mind. I design for confident and healthy women simply because that’s what I want to promote and encourage. Our garments are made of bold patterns and colors, and you have to be confident in order to wear it. There is nothing sexier than a confident, healthy woman. What was the inspiration behind your SS14 collection? When we create a collection, my sister and I do our research on location. For our SS14 collection, we were inspired by Morocco. We explored and drew inspiration from the markets, the architecture, the cultures, the flora and fauna, the tastes and smells. Why do you think it is important to have a fashion show that showcases African and Malaysian fashion? I feel that the world’s eyes focus on European and American designers as the trendsetters in fashion. By encouraging and showcasing African and Malaysian designers, we promote and expose the amazing talent that we have and by doing so, trends are set by us. Probably the beach (hopefully somewhere tropic, with palm trees, crystal-clear water, and fruity cocktails with little umbrellas). And what does one do at the beach? Tan. • 60. | JUNE/JULY 201460 S SWAP ‘TIL YOU DROP wapping your clothes is an inexpensive and eco-friendly way to revamp your wardrobe, so imagine a whole website dedicated to exactly this! Swapdom makes swapping simple and easy to use by creating group swaps that allow individuals to get the perfect item they want. This multi-person sharing site is leading the way in online swapping by expanding to include gear for even babies and kids. Below, Cliché caught up with Swapdom’s CEO and co-founder Petros Georgopoulos about his ever-growing (and genius) business. BY CHEYENNE PROSPER ©Swapdom Cliché: So, what exactly is Swapdom? Petros Georgopoulos: Swapdom is an efficient tool that finds multi- party swaps. Our algorithm is a vital component for peer-to-peer exchange. We firmly believe that the sharing economy is our home, a space to develop peer exchange environments for physical goods. You simply post items you’d like to trade, then you browse for items you’d like to receive in exchange. Then the Swapdom algorithm does its magic to figure out a loop where everyone gets an item they’ve requested. How did you come up with the idea for a swapping marketplace? I realized that the classic form of swapping, where two swappers attempt to exchange items with one another, is rather inefficient as the chances of each person wanting what the other one is offering at the time are rather slim; sizes differ, tastes differ. Moreover, even if they find two items to exchange, the two swappers enter a bargaining situation where they have to mutually agree that it is a fair exchange. Swapdom is unique in featuring multi-way swapping, and changes your perception of what swapping is. It is a fundamentally different experience. You recently launched a baby section on Swapdom. Why is Swapdom more convenient for parents to use instead of purchasing new items at a store? Parents spend thousands of dollars on things their kids outgrow quickly. With Swapdom, they can trade gear their kids have already outgrown in exchange for items they need, or even exchange kids' gear items for fashion or home finds. What encouraged a baby and kids platform to be added to Swapdom? We added the kids' gear and (very recently) home marketplaces because we listenedtoourusers.Ourresearchshowed a high demand for these marketplaces, so we decided to dive right in. The fashion industry has made steps to be more eco-friendly. How does Swapdom contribute to environmentally friendly practices? Swapdom's fashion marketplace helps to reduce textile waste by finding new homes for unwanted fashion items, and it now does the same for baby and kids' gear and home goods as well. Where do you see Swapdom in five years? We hope to be a leader in the sharing economy movement and plan to have many marketplaces available. Our app will be launched very soon, and in five years' time, when people think of peer- to-peer exchange, we want them to think of Swapdom. • 61. JUNE/JULY 2014 | 61 he beach is not every- one’s cup of tea—the scent of saltwater, the constant call of seagulls, and sand sticking to just about every part of your skin—but many of us beauty fans can agree that we love those sexy, tousled waves the beach gives us, especially when they last for days. While textured waves are styled naturally by saltwater and the overall beach atmo- sphere, there are some tricks to getting this look without the trip to the shore. Sea salt products can help you create beautiful beach-inspired hair right at home. BY VICTORIA OLMO Scrunch and Air-Dry An easy method that you can do right after you have washed your hair, the scrunch and air-dry technique takes sec- onds to do. Flip your damp hair forward, and then scrunch it with your hands. Since you’re starting with wet hair, you’ll achieve a longer more textured finished hairstyle. Using a few sprays of Sexy Hair’s Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Renewal Beach Spray can help your hair form even more waves! With ingre- dients like sea salt and algae extract, this product, once it’s set into your locks, will make those beachy waves appear like magic. All you have to do is let your hair air dry naturally. Overnight Braids A safe way to create tighter waves or curls without using harsh heat is with braids. Before you go to bed, or while you are getting ready to go out, tightly braid your hair into a few sections. Ei- ther leave them in for a couple of hours or the entire night while you’re sleeping, and then let the braids loose. You’ll have gorgeous tight curls! If you desire looser waves, simply run your fingers through your hair to soften the style. Adding one of our favorite sea salt products Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Textur- izing Sea Salt Spray to your hair will make that sexy and tousled look even easier to achieve! Quick Updos A great benefit to a beachy hairstyle is that you can do just about anything with it, including updos. Slick it back into a trendy low-pony by brushing back all of your hair and securing it with an elastic, and show those waves off from behind. Or style it into a thick braid, letting some pieces stick out for a chic, messy look. To keep your hair out of the way, throw it up into a tousled, textured bun. The choice is up to you! • 66. e’ve all had our own clothing fantasies: being lavished only in the finest of fabrics and organic fibers or wearing highly-detailed garments, made from planet–friendly dyes. The Oda founders have managed to make our clothing dreams a reality. Sisters Angie Kim and Maggie Kim met Mandalyn Begay as undergraduates studying at Dartmouth College. Later, studying at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, the three women created their fashion company, Oda. Their newest collection for spring/summer, titled Castle in the Clouds, is an “ode to the dreamer.” The collection, influenced by Oda founders’ love of art, fashion, history, and nature, appears to draw inspiration from fairy tales, including such archetypal characters as the brave warrior and the evil mistress. Each of the featured looks, made from environmentally sustainable materials, embodies classic fairy tale themes like dark versus light and the good versus evil. The pieces, though fantastical, take form in modern-day apparel that women (and men) can wear both day and night. Photographed by Sarah Kehoe W | JUNE/JULY 201466 FASHION | LOOKBOOK
  • 69. Cliché: What inspired this collection? Angie Kim, Maggie Kim, and Mandalyn Begay: We were inspired by a few different elements. One was old school candy that we all love to eat late at night while working, things like Fun Dip, Nerds, Lemon Heads, and Starbursts from when we were kids. We were also inspired by the circus and some of the darker, dreamier elements. Lastly, we were inspired by the trio of books Sabriel, Liriel, and Abhorsen by Garth Nix about a necromancer who can raise the dead by playing a bandolier of bells. What are some favorite pieces? We love the Forgotten Kisses meringue dress (the white asymmetrical dress), and the bubblegum pink frothy dress. What do you hope for in this collection? We hope it brings a smile to people’s faces, and we hope they buy this collection. Anything interesting you can tell us about the collection or one of the pieces that we wouldn’t know? All of the colors were hand-dyed, usually at least 5-6 times to get the colors right, and often in small strips of fabric individually dip-dyed or squeeze-dyed. • 70. | JUNE/JULY 201470 ith summer finally here, you’d think I’d be out enjoying the gorgeous weather and the break from being indoors. However, being a true entertainment junkie, I find myself still glued to my electronics. Also, it doesn’t help that I can watch TV, listen to music, and read a book from my phone; let’s just say that my face has yet to bask in the light of day. Who needs healthy social interaction anyway? Especially when you can stay glued to a screen all day (totally joking—go make friends). Here’s what I currently have on rotation. BY JENNIFER CASTRO Listening To: Bangerz by Miley Cyrus So we all know Hannah Montana- no-more has gone clinically insane circa Britney Spears 2007. Still, despite how repulsed I am by her new persona, I’m completely obsessed with her Bangerz album— though if you tell anyone, I’ll deny it. It’s very rare that I find an album where I like almost every single song, but believe it or not, this is one of them. However, this shouldn’t come as a surprise when she’s been collaborating with artists such as Will.i.Am and Pharrell. Album highlights include fan-favorites like “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball,” pretty vocals like “Adore You” and “Drive,” and of course finger-snapping beats like “Hands in the Air” and “Someone Else”; and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The ill-fitting hairstyles, crazy antics, and unbearable new personality might turn you away from Miley, but there’s no denying that this album rocks! Reading: Brunette Ambition by Lea Michele This shouldn’t come as a surprise to our readers. I love all things Lea Michele. In her debut novel— which is both memoir as well as a how-to for the young and ambitious—we get to hear revealing untold stories and never-before-seen images of the multi-tasking starlet. From beauty tips to fitness advice, Michele describes this as “the book [she] wishes she’d had in her teens and early twenties.” I may have been newly inducted into my late twenties, but that didn’t stop me from pre-ordering my copy. Playing: Yoshi’s New Island for Nintendo 3DS If I told you that I prepaid for this game before its release date just so I could play it right away, would you judge me? Call me a #nerd if you will, but I have no regrets. This is basically a “midquel” between the original Super Mario 2: Yoshi’s Island (SNES) and Yoshi’s Island (DS). It plays much like its predecessor, with theYoshis helping to reunite Baby Mario and his kidnapped brother. What could be more adorable than diapers and dinosaurs? I’ll admit I still favor the original, but I’m happy to get my fix of flutter jumps, egg- tosses, and ground pounds. W #NOWPLAYING Entertainment Director JENNIFER CASTRO shares the things she is currently loving this summer. Watching: Game of Thrones (Seasons 1-4) Despite all of my self-proclaimed entertainment savviness, I will admit that I am usually the last person to know about a hit show (thank goodness for Netflix and on-demand). So although HBO’s Game of Thrones just wrapped up its fourth season—and I’m sure it was phenomenal—this late bloomer is still waiting on Khaleesi’s dragon eggs to hatch. Though I’m far behind and social media has long-ago informed me of some of the show’s major events, there’s something fulfilling in watching the storyline from the beginning and at my own pace. Sure, I don’t have the excruciating, albeit exciting experience of waiting for the next episode week after week, but I have literally hundreds of hours of viewing pleasure at my disposal! And so far, I’ve been as enthralled as King Joffrey in a room full of dead puppies. COLUMN | JENNIFER'S PAGE
  • 71. JUNE/JULY 2014 | 71 J A MAN WITH MANY TALENTS ay Ellis, who was born in Fort Sumter, South Carolina, began his career as an international print model. Since then he has turned into one of BET’s breakthrough actors, starring as Bryce Blue Westbrook in the television series The Game. He has also been seen on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, the CW’s Heart of Dixie, and CBS’ How I Met Your Mother. When this heart- throbbing actor is not filming, he enjoys playing basketball, cooking, playing guitar, and staying fit. He is also an advocate for community service, higher education, and motivating youth to pursue a career in the arts. Below we chat with Jay Ellis about his role in The Game and the rest of his rapidly growing career. BY JASMINE MOUSTAFA Cliché: Can you tell us a little bit about this season of The Game and where your character, Blue Westbrook, is with his career and love life? Jay Ellis: He’s trying to figure it all out. Is he in love or does he really see a future with Kiera, and what would his life look like without her? As for his career, I think he’s focused on doing what it takes to perform at his best on the field. He has also learned to be a better teammate in order to be the leader. What can we look forward to in the next season of The Game? [Laughs] More drama as always. But I hope we see these two (Kiera and Blue) finish what they’ve started. And I hope Blue wins a championship, but that’s the athlete in me. Can you easily relate to the character? I definitely think there is some relatability (is that a word?) there. [Laughs] I definitely can appreciate his passion for success, winning, and love. Where did your inspiration for acting come from? I love how powerful good acting can be. It literally can change lives in a single moment, and the effect storytelling has had on me made me want to pursue acting. Did you always know that you wanted a career in acting? Yeah. I think I was afraid to actually pursue it for a long time though. It seemed so hard and elusive, and I was afraid of failure. But it’s something I wanted since I was a kid. When you’re not busy working on set or at your pilates studios, what are some of your hobbies and favorite pastimes? Surfing, hiking… and I love music. I’m always trying to be a student of some kind, especially of music, language, and the world. ©EltonAnderson MAN'S WORLD | JAY ELLIS
  • 72. MAN'S WORLD | RAPHAEL SBARGE | JUNE/JULY 201472 RAPHAEL IN THE FIRST aphael Sbarge may not be a household name, but he sure has captured a lot of hearts and minds over the years in his many roles. He has proven to be a man able to play a wide range of characters, from a mad man in Criminal Minds, Kaidan Alenko in the Mass Effect series, to the famous conscience Jiminy Cricket in Once Upon A Time. With truly a heart of gold, Sbarge shares his thoughts with us on past and current projects, such as Green Wish and Murder In the First. BY BRITTANY N. HUSKEY / PHOTOGRAPHED BY LESLEY BRYCE Cliché: Unfortunately, your character Jiminy Cricket hasn’t been seen a lot this past season. What do you think Jiminy has been doing in the missing year no one can remember? Raphael Sbarge: [Laughs] Probably trying to do a lot of therapy with all residents of Storybrooke. I would imagine that Jiminy/Archie was very busy. Archie’s been transformed, physically, a number of times throughout the series. How does he feel about being flipped back and further so many times? He has definitely been bounced around. Look, this is a huge canvas, right? So, they have so many things that they have to balance and I think they are trying to take care of a lot of characters storylines at once. In trying to make sense of Archie’s storyline, I love the fact that he became a Cricket in order to try to do the right thing and find some penance R
  • 73. JUNE/JULY 2014 | 73 for something that he kind of did early on in his life and his commitment with being a cricket, a therapist, and helping Emma and Henry navigate having two mothers, which is always hard for him. I think that Archie has been Henry’s advocate and champion. There’s a lot going on with him being a cricket then a human, among various other things. I believe that Archie/ Jiminy, ultimately, is always there to do the right thing. I believe that he has with Regina. You know she is both frightening, on the one hand because of how she is, and on the other hand he notices that perhaps with her being shown and given the right kind of care she would be able to move in the right path. So, he’s been there to be kind of the people’s champion in their journeys. But his main connection has always been with Henry and I think that is where he really shines, where I hope he does the most good. Besides being in Once Upon A Time, you will also be appearing in Murder in the First, a crime- and trial- based show. How is this show going to be different from say Law Order? Murder in the First is airing now on Monday nights at 10/9c on TNT. I have been doing it concurrently with Once Upon A Time and I am a regular on the show. It is a Steven Bochco series. He is sort of permanent writer and executive producer in the form of television that is more procedural and cop driven, such NYPD Blue and other icons in the television universe. He has conceived, with a new young writer by the name of Eric Lodal, a case that takes place over the season. So, it’s one case that we travel with throughout the whole season. He has this incredible cast which is Kathleen Robertson, Tom Felton, James Cromwell, Richard Schiff, and Steven Weber. It’s just an astonishing cast. Steven Bochco has given us all this wonderful opportunity as explorers, as opposed to doing the whole thing in one episode, to do this in over ten episodes. It’s kind of like a long movie. So, you get to play this detective named Molk assigned to the case. How different is his character from Jiminy? I play a single dad, divorced, who’s dealing with the pressures of being a civil servant. So, in this case, do I think that Archie could help Molk?Yeah, sure. I think that we could all use a good therapist and someone to talk to. Who doesn’t want someone to talk to? But it is a very different universe. I have gone from the fantasy and magical universe of Once Upon A Time to the gritty reality for a cop show set in San Francisco. It’s a big arc, but as an actor it’s so wonderful to be able to do different things. I did so much work before Once Upon A Time and I will do so much after it. I love being a part of that show, but I am always excited about the variety of things that come my way. Speaking of the variety of things that come your way, you are also involved with Green Wish, a nonprofit that you helped build and support. Can you tell us a little about why you helped to start this program? Basically the reason I started Green Wish was in regard to being a parent. My daughter Gracie was born and it’s a magical moment when you are handed your child. You feel connected with everything, sort of one with the world in that moment, and yet at the same time you feel how vulnerable to what the world will bring. I had this profound sense of looking around the world and sensing some real concern for what is happening in the world. It’s pretty intense from the callossing bee population to ice melting and dropping off into the ocean, and so further. There’s so much going on. I, in a desire to make a difference, come up with an idea, and approached Ed Begley Jr. about it, of creating this umbrella organization that opposed to supporting one group, because there is so much need out in the world, but the definition are all local and green. For example, the chapter in LosAngeles: we support earth, air, water, and sustainable education, but in the various cities that are now opening chapters around the country, we give them the tools to set up their nonprofit in their area. For very little money, they elect their own board, they get free banking from People’s Bank, and from there they get access to all our resources. They then go out to their own area and identify the local community-based nonprofits that really need support. We give them fundraising tools, as well as them finding their own, and 99 cents on the dollar goes right back into their community. So, it’s community-based giving program that goes to green, sustainable projects. We now have chapters spurting up all over the country. As opposed to stumbling around in the dark, this is a way of handing people a lantern to shine a light to bring not only money, but awareness to these community projects.
  • 74. MAN'S WORLD | THOMAS D. TAYLOR | JUNE/JULY 201474 T RENAISSANCE WRITER©Elyse Bruce homas D. Taylor is an author who writes in manygenres, including horror, science fiction, mainstream fiction, and nonfiction. His horror books force his characters and his readers to descend into dark underworlds and reemerge with moral lessons learned. Two of his nonfiction books dispel much of the ignorance and misinformation about autism. His most recent nonfiction book, Autism’s Politics and Political Factions: A Commentary, explains some of the differences between the many warring factions of the autism community. Cliché sat down to talk with him about his most recent book and more. BY GREG TRUTNER Cliché: What inspired you to write horror? Thomas D. Taylor: A good part of my childhood was spent watching creature feature and Grade B horror movies on TV. I also read a lot of horror books. But I found faults with most of what I was seeing. Movies and books rooted in myth and legend seemed to have taken liberties. “True” stories often turned out to be factually incorrect, and “scary” stories didn’t seem to scare. Thus began my endeavors, first to improve upon what others had written, and eventually to produce all original material. It is, of course, the original material that I have published. When you write your horror books, is there any research you need to do? If so, what kind? Every story I write, every novella, every novel, no matter what genre I am writing in, requires research. For a horror story to work for whoever’s reading it, for example, a writer has to convince the reader to suspend disbelief so that the reader can come to believe that something totally fictional, yet absolutely terrifying, can happen to them. The best way to do this is to make sure that if you are writing about real things, you get those things right. This is because, aside from not being distracted by inaccuracies, if readers can trust that an author has the facts right about what is real, they are willing to believe the author might be telling the truth about
