The Champ Camp Staff is concerned about the health and safety of all of our participants. If at any time, we feel it is
warranted, we may institute mandatory water breaks, shorten games, and/or cancel sessions due to extremely hot condi-
tions. The following information is a guide to help our coaches and participants identify the early warning signs of dehy-
dration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke, all potentially life-threatening conditions.
DEHYDRATION & HEAT EXHAUSTION
Dehydration is caused when the body loses water content and essential body salts such as sodium, potassium, calcium
bicarbonate and phosphate.
Heat exhaustion occurs when your body gets too hot. The hypothalamus, the part of the brain that controls thirst and
hunger, also controls the body's core temperature. Normally, the body cools itself by sweating. But if you are exposed to
high temperatures for a long time and don't replace the fluids you lose, the body systems that regulate temperature
become overwhelmed. As a result, your body produces more heat than it can release. Heat exhaustion requires immediate
attention because it can progress to heat stroke, a life threatening illness.
Warning Signs of DEHYDRATION and/or HEAT EXHAUSTION:
• thirst • lack of sweating
• less-frequent urination - very dark yellow urine • muscle and abdominal cramps
• dry skin, mouth and/or mucous membranes • headache
• fatigue • nausea, vomiting
• dizziness and/or light-headedness • mild temperature elevations
• confusion • pale, clammy skin
• increased heart rate and breathing
TREATMENT - Notify a member of the Champ Camp Medical Staff as soon as possible. They are located at every field site.
If after hours, call our head trainer Marty McGinty at 410 925-4760. In cases of mild dehydration, simple rehydration is
recommended by drinking fluids to effectively restore body fluids, electrolytes, and salt balance.
HEAT STROKE
Heat stroke is the most severe form of heat illness and is a life-threatening emergency. It is the result of long, extreme expo-
sure to the sun, in which a person does not sweat enough to lower body temperature. It is a condition that develops rapidly
and requires immediate medical treatment.
Warning Signs of HEAT STROKE:
• headache • hot, dry skin that is flushed but not sweaty
• dizziness • a high body temperature
• disorientation, agitation or confusion • loss of consciousness
• sluggishness or fatigue • rapid heart beat
• seizure • hallucinations
TREATMENT - Call 911! Notify a member of the Champ Camp Medical Staff immediately. They are located at every field site.
If after hours, call our head trainer Marty McGinty at 410 925-4760. It is important for the person to be treated immediately
as heat stroke can cause permanent damage or death. There are some immediate first aid measures you can take while
waiting for help to arrive:
• Get the person indoors.
• Remove clothing and gently apply cool water to the skin followed by fanning to stimulate sweating.
• Apply ice packs to the groin and armpits.
• Have the person lie down in a cool area with their feet slightly elevated
