2. A defense attorney in Reno, Nevada, William Routsis
represents clients accused of committing various violent and
nonviolent crimes, including assault, domestic battery,
homicide, and white collar crimes. In his years of practice,
William Routsis has acquitted many wrongly convicted
persons, including Jorge Romero.
In 2002, Romero was charged with first degree murder and
attempted murder. Romero hired two local attorneys to help
him in his case. The two attorneys assured him his case was
beatable at trial. Unfortunately, despite its complex nature, his
trial lasted a mere week and the jury deliberated for only a
couple of hours before finding him guilty. The judge sentenced
him to life in prison.
3. He appealed and in 2009, his conviction was overturned. A
second trial was granted. In 2011, he settled on attorney
Routsis to handle his second trial. Efforts were made to
contact witnesses who had moved states or were in hiding. A
number of them were persuaded to testify in Romero’s favor.
During the trial, the defense battled the state relentlessly.
Sadly, the case was adjudged a mistrial, setting the stage for
trial number three.
In the third trial, the defense hired forensic experts to break
down evidence before court. The witnesses gave their
testimonies as best as they could remember and the defense
challenged the state’s evidence, revealing foul play on the part
of the investigators. The trial ended in a hung jury and
because Romero had already served 11 years in jail, the judge
set him free.
