Research
• My research focused on looking at the conventions of the Progressive Rock
genre so that I could utilise the appropriate tropes in my own music video.
To do this, I selected three songs from different bands and conducted in
depth research into their respective music videos. As the genre has spanned
multiple decades and started when music videos were in their simpler
stages, I was able to use the videos to see how the genre has evolved over
time.
• By researching the older videos I was able to gather conventions that I could
parody in my own video as both an homage as well as to add some humour.
On top of the specific songs I also looked into the general tropes spread
across the genre via the website TV.Tropes. Not only can I compare what is
on this website with my own video, but also the other videos I researched to
see what conventions they did and didn’t include and why.
• A few phrases are repeated on different slides. This results in the pages
being more cluttered than they need to be. To improve on this, I would make
sure each slide only contains necessary information.
Planning
• My planning allowed me to create a clear outline for my music video,
meaning that filming was a simple task. I created a shot list on Word
which listed the type of shot, its duration and what was to occur during
it. This meant that, although a few small changers could occur, I already
knew what I needed to do whilst filming. The storyboard I made went
further in depth into this, giving me a visual representation of what the
shots should roughly look like. I also listed what techniques and
equipment I planned to use, as well as music videos that I could use for
reference.
• To improve on my planning, I would add more branches to my mind map
in order to expand further on my ideas. This would allow me to gather a
deeper understanding of what limitations I may encounter as well as
what I could add.
Time Management
• Whilst I did complete my project in time, I was only able to start the
project shortly before the deadline. This was because of people and
equipment only being simultaneously available at limited times.
However, the date was organised in plenty of time and the required
footage was gathered efficiently. If I had more time, I would have been
able to prepare more props and equipment to allow for more variation in
footage. This would mainly include scenes parodying classic alien and
horror conventions.
Technical Qualities - camera
My music video utilised a drone in order to get various shots of the setting and of
characters from interesting angles. This shares similiarities with real music videos,
particularly modern ones. However, many of the older music videos of the
progressive rock genre don’t have these style of shots. However, in order to
compensate for this, I made sure to include close-ups and medium shots, some of
which followed characters . These shots reflect many of the shots used in videos such
as ‘The Other Side of Life’, one of the music videos I researched.

Technical Qualities – editing/post
When editing my music video, my main focus was to ensure that the shot cuts and movements
in the video were in sync with the song’s tune. To do this, I added the music to Premiere Pro
first and cut up my shots in order for them to fit with the tune of the song. This sometimes
required me to slow down some of my shots so that they would fit better. However, when
doing this I made sure that none of the shots were slowed down so much they would become
jagged and choppy. I didn’t bother to add any transitions of visual effects as I felt that simple
jump cuts worked best for how I wanted the music to sync-up. Furthermore, when the music
was in its slower segments, I made sure to use longer lasting calm shots to reflect said music.

Aesthetic Qualities
The camera quality of my music video is high, thanks in part to the filming equipment I
used as well as the high resolution I rendered the video at. Whilst I believe the shots
types I used were varied and interesting, I feel that what was in the video wasn’t as
interesting or bizarre as I had hoped I could have made it. I could improve this by
creating sets featuring the bizarre things that I would like and taking various recordings
of them, allowing for an array of possible camera angle for me to use.

Audience Appeal
To appeal to my target audience I made sure to include unorthodox imagery. This style
of imagery reflects the progressive rock genre’s want to bring an unusual twist to the
typical rock genre, and so the target audience feels a connection between them.
I deliberately included overly dramatic shots along with the music to parody many
bands of the genre taking themselves too seriously, something which is frequently
disliked by fans and critics of the genre.

• I feel like a lot of my shots were just of fields, so I agree with
the recommended improvement.
• I agree that the cinematography was good, as I ensured that
many different angles, lengths and movements were used
when filming. I agree that adding a wider variation of what is in
the scene would improve the video, as I could then utilise the
cinematography to capture a wider array of footage and
prevent the video from feeling repetitive. I also agree with the
criticism that there should have been more references to
aliens, as this would have added a humorous aspect to the
video.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
• I slightly disagree that I added an interesting twist on the video,
as I feel that I could have had a much more unexpected twist
by adding more scenes parodying classic alien folklore.
Peer Feedback Summary
•To improve my music video, I would add in shots of
more unorthodox imagery in order to give the video
a more comedic feel as well as to have a greater
variety of shots. I would also continue to
experiment with more shot types to see what
interesting cinematography I could create.
Action Plan for future development
• I feel that my video lacks the comedic/parodic edge that I wanted It
to have. To fix this I should ensure that I have more time to organise
equipment and cast that I can utilise.
• On the other hand, I am very happy with many of the shots that I got
with the drone, and would like to experiment further in order to see
what other interesting shots and angles I could create.

  • 3. Research • My research focused on looking at the conventions of the Progressive Rock genre so that I could utilise the appropriate tropes in my own music video. To do this, I selected three songs from different bands and conducted in depth research into their respective music videos. As the genre has spanned multiple decades and started when music videos were in their simpler stages, I was able to use the videos to see how the genre has evolved over time. • By researching the older videos I was able to gather conventions that I could parody in my own video as both an homage as well as to add some humour. On top of the specific songs I also looked into the general tropes spread across the genre via the website TV.Tropes. Not only can I compare what is on this website with my own video, but also the other videos I researched to see what conventions they did and didn’t include and why. • A few phrases are repeated on different slides. This results in the pages being more cluttered than they need to be. To improve on this, I would make sure each slide only contains necessary information.
  • 4. Planning • My planning allowed me to create a clear outline for my music video, meaning that filming was a simple task. I created a shot list on Word which listed the type of shot, its duration and what was to occur during it. This meant that, although a few small changers could occur, I already knew what I needed to do whilst filming. The storyboard I made went further in depth into this, giving me a visual representation of what the shots should roughly look like. I also listed what techniques and equipment I planned to use, as well as music videos that I could use for reference. • To improve on my planning, I would add more branches to my mind map in order to expand further on my ideas. This would allow me to gather a deeper understanding of what limitations I may encounter as well as what I could add.
  • 5. Time Management • Whilst I did complete my project in time, I was only able to start the project shortly before the deadline. This was because of people and equipment only being simultaneously available at limited times. However, the date was organised in plenty of time and the required footage was gathered efficiently. If I had more time, I would have been able to prepare more props and equipment to allow for more variation in footage. This would mainly include scenes parodying classic alien and horror conventions.
  • 6. Technical Qualities - camera My music video utilised a drone in order to get various shots of the setting and of characters from interesting angles. This shares similiarities with real music videos, particularly modern ones. However, many of the older music videos of the progressive rock genre don’t have these style of shots. However, in order to compensate for this, I made sure to include close-ups and medium shots, some of which followed characters . These shots reflect many of the shots used in videos such as ‘The Other Side of Life’, one of the music videos I researched.   • 7. Technical Qualities – editing/post When editing my music video, my main focus was to ensure that the shot cuts and movements in the video were in sync with the song’s tune. To do this, I added the music to Premiere Pro first and cut up my shots in order for them to fit with the tune of the song. This sometimes required me to slow down some of my shots so that they would fit better. However, when doing this I made sure that none of the shots were slowed down so much they would become jagged and choppy. I didn’t bother to add any transitions of visual effects as I felt that simple jump cuts worked best for how I wanted the music to sync-up. Furthermore, when the music was in its slower segments, I made sure to use longer lasting calm shots to reflect said music. Camera quality allows for crisp and saturated footage. Slow panning shot establishes the scene whilst maintaining a feeling of momentum
  • 8. Aesthetic Qualities The camera quality of my music video is high, thanks in part to the filming equipment I used as well as the high resolution I rendered the video at. Whilst I believe the shots types I used were varied and interesting, I feel that what was in the video wasn’t as interesting or bizarre as I had hoped I could have made it. I could improve this by creating sets featuring the bizarre things that I would like and taking various recordings of them, allowing for an array of possible camera angle for me to use. Crisp resolution means the images aren’t blurry Strong saturation of colours makes the video eye- catching and inviting.
  • 9. Audience Appeal To appeal to my target audience I made sure to include unorthodox imagery. This style of imagery reflects the progressive rock genre’s want to bring an unusual twist to the typical rock genre, and so the target audience feels a connection between them. I deliberately included overly dramatic shots along with the music to parody many bands of the genre taking themselves too seriously, something which is frequently disliked by fans and critics of the genre. Peer Feedback Summary • What do you agree with from your peer feedback? • I feel like a lot of my shots were just of fields, so I agree with the recommended improvement. • I agree that the cinematography was good, as I ensured that many different angles, lengths and movements were used when filming. I agree that adding a wider variation of what is in the scene would improve the video, as I could then utilise the cinematography to capture a wider array of footage and prevent the video from feeling repetitive. I also agree with the criticism that there should have been more references to aliens, as this would have added a humorous aspect to the video. • What do you disagree with from your peer feedback? • I slightly disagree that I added an interesting twist on the video, as I feel that I could have had a much more unexpected twist by adding more scenes parodying classic alien folklore.
  • 15. Peer Feedback Summary •To improve my music video, I would add in shots of more unorthodox imagery in order to give the video a more comedic feel as well as to have a greater variety of shots. I would also continue to experiment with more shot types to see what interesting cinematography I could create.
  • 16. Action Plan for future development • I feel that my video lacks the comedic/parodic edge that I wanted It to have. To fix this I should ensure that I have more time to organise equipment and cast that I can utilise. • On the other hand, I am very happy with many of the shots that I got with the drone, and would like to experiment further in order to see what other interesting shots and angles I could create.
