2. Existing Product 1: Bohemian Rhapsody
Bohemian Rhapsody is a 2018 biopic film
about the life of Freddie Mercury, lead
singer and front-man of the rock band
Queen (and played by Rami Malek, who
won Best Actor for his work in the film),
from the time he joined the band to the
time of Queen's famous Live Aid concert
in 1985.
I chose to look at this film because it is
(at the very least) based in fact, given
that it is about a real-life person (a very,
very famous one (while he was alive) at
that), like my hypothetical docufilm
would be. However, a difference
between my hypothetical docufilm and
Bohemian Rhapsody would be that my
movie would try not to take liberties of
the fictional kind like BR did.
Some of Queen's songs are featured in the movie
(such as 'Somebody to Love', 'Fat Bottomed Girls'
and 'Love of My Life'), and this is something that I
plan to emulate in my docufilm trailer, by using
songs from RWBY, an anime web series that Monty
had a very large hand in the initial development of.
Songs that I would include would probably be
the acoustic remix of 'This Will Be The Day', the
opening song of the first Volume (or season) of
RWBY, the original version of 'This Will Be The Day',
which is a very rock/metal-type song, and (if the
song gets released in time), the song 'Indomitable'
from the sixth Volume of RWBY.
3. Existing Product 2: RWBY
RWBY is an anime web series created by Monty
Oum and Rooster Teeth, and was introduced to the
world in 2012 with the release of the 'Red' Trailer, a
three-minutes-long animated action scene featuring
Ruby Rose (not to be confused with the actress of
the same name), the main character of the show.
The show, which could be described as an
action/comedy/drama series, has spanned six
seasons (titled as 'Volumes'), a couple of videos
games, several manga and comics adaptations, a
manga anthology, a comedy spin-off series, and a
young adult novel focusing on four popular side-
characters is in the works.
I plan to make the trailer have a comedic element to
it, matching RWBY (the work for which Monty is
most famous for)
4. Existing Product 3: The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight's most prominent poster features Batman (the
titular character, played by Christian Bale) standing in front of a
skyscraper (probably Wayne Tower) that has a flaming Batman
logo on it, conveying that this movie will be one involving a lot of
fire and danger.
The second prominent poster features the main antagonist of the
movie, The Joker (played by Heath Ledger) is writing his
catchphrase "Why so serious?" in blood, on what is presumably a
piece of glass in front of him, giving the connotation that the
movie will involve blood, which is a reference to death, and the
danger of it.
I plan to include similar connotations to other (probably more
comedic) themes in my posters for my Monty Oum docufilm, as
the hypothetical docufilm will be a comedic docufilm.
5. Existing Product 4: Sausage Party
The poster for the movie Sausage Party works in a comedic sense
(even if the comedy is of the sexual innuendo type, indicating that
the sausage in the poster (who is the main character of the
movie) is the equivalent to a certain male sexual organ.
Another of these posters makes a very clear (which includes the
sausage character, as well as a female bread character (most of
the characters in the movie are either food or drink)) reference to
sexual intercourse.
"I was defeated... by the
mere sight... of the
innkeeper's skirt-length!"
Qrow Branwen
Though I don't plan to use sexual humor to such a
blatant degree in my docufilm posters or my docufilm
trailers, I do plan to include a comedic element in my
trailer/posters.
However, since RWBY did include elements of sexual
humor, among lots and lots of other humorous
moments, there is a chance that I might include that kind
of humor, but only in small, subtle amounts (similar to
how RWBY does their sexual humor).
6. Research Analysis
A common feature that all these researched products have is that
they're extremely popular and have cult followings in their own ways.
The Dark Knight and Bohemian Rhapsody are based on popular things
(the character of Batman and the life of Freddie Mercury, respectively),
and RWBY and Sausage Party are both completely animated. RWBY
and Sausage Party are both products with a more comedic tone to
them, while The Dark Knight and Bohemian Rhapsody are more
dramatic and serious products.
I plan to make the trailer for my docufilm have a more comedic effect,
much like RWBY. However, the idea of me making a trailer with a more
dramatic tone to it is also an idea that I've considered, though I prefer
to use a more comedic tone as that is what I'm better at doing.
9. Secondary Audience research
• Judging by the screenshots on Rooster Teeth's forums (coming from
a question asking about what Rooster Teeth's target audience is,
exactly what I'm finding out), I would say that the target audience
for RT would be from mid-teens (as in 15-16) to mid-20s (as in
around 25-26 years old), with a potential middle-ground of late-
teens to early-adulthood, as in around 18-20 years old), with a
minor lean towards a more male audience.
• This says that my target audience for what I plan to make for my
FMP is of a similar age to myself, if not slightly older than me. This
works fine for me, as I know what media I, as a 17 year old, enjoy
consuming.
• My product (the docufilm trailer part of my product) will appeal to
my target audience (being young adults) by including heavy rock and
metal music (genres of music that young adults like) in the trailer.
For the poster part of my product, I plan to include contrasting
colours (like red and blue (which could be a reference to another
famous Rooster Teeth series, Red vs. Blue), black and white, etc.) on
my poster, which would catch the eyes of people when they walk
past the poster.
11. Secondary Audience research
• From this poll conducted by Nintendo themselves, 80% of people who purchase
things relating to the Nintendo Switch (their most recent console, and the fastest-
selling video game console of all time) are between the ages of 19 and 45. Given
that more than half of that 80% are in the '25-34 years old' category, I can infer
that the overall average age of someone that would purchase seomthing relating
to the Nintendo Switch (either hardware or software-wise) is in between 25 and
34 years old, with (most likely) nearly 90% of those people being males.
• This says that my audience are adult males with money to spend on entertainment
products for themselves. The fact that these people have money to spend implies
that they have jobs to earn them to money to pay for a Switch, some games,
maybe a Pro Controller for more intensive sessions and a carrying case for when it
is required (which would cost approximately £450).
• How will your product appeal to this audience: Given that my FMP is about the
creator of a series parly inspired by video games (though most of the characters in
the series take inspirations from characters from folklore), my docufilm trailer will
include action scenes from the series' that Monty Oum worked on (those series'
being Red vs. Blue, RWBY, Dead Fantasy and Haloid).
12. Subject Research (Movie Posters)
• A poster is commonly used to advertise for an entertainment
product such as a movie, TV series or video game. With the more
well-known products, there are sometimes more than a single
poster. One example of this would be the movie Harry Potter and
the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which had multiple posters for it
released in order to hype up the conclusion to the eight-movie
saga based on the famous children's books by JK Rowling
• One of these posters include the three main characters: Harry
Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger (played by Daniel
Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, respectively), standing
in front of their school, Hogwarts, which looks like it's been the
victim of a war (which isn't inaccurate). Another of these posters
features Harry himself firing a spell from his wand at an unknown
foe, connotating that Deathly Hallows Part 2 is quite an action-
oriented movie.
13. Subject Research (Trailers)
• A trailer (also known as a preview) is a common
way of advertising a feature film, TV series or
video game. Trailers are commonly distributed
through the internet, though movie trailer are
also shown in cinemas before a film starts. The
purpose of a trailer is to get people excited for
the media that it is promoting, be it a film, TV
series, video game or otherwise.
• One of my favourite trailers is the "Everyone is Here!" Trailer for the video game
'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'. This was the first major trailer shown off for the game,
and revealed that every character (all 63 of them) that had appeared in the four
previous Super Smash Bros. games would be returning as playable fighters for
this game. The trailer even went the extra mile and revealed the first newcomer
to the game, that being the Inklings from Splatoon, one of Nintendo's newest games.
• With the reveal of the game's title 'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate', the trailer goes to
great lengths to imply that this is the ultimate, and best, game in the hit fighting
franchise (which it, after nearly half a year of the game being out, is commonly
considered to be so, given that it's one of the most well-received fighting games
released in recent memory.
14. Subject Research (Trailers)
• Another of my favourite trailers is for the movie Inception, directed by Christopher
Nolan (and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The film is about a thief with the ability to
enter people's dreams and steal their secrets from their subconscious.
• The first trailer of the movie reveals next to nothing about the film and its plot, but
gives the viewers a look into the world that the characters in the movie inhabit,
without even speaking a word of dialogue. The fact that Hans Zimmer's score
accompanies this trailer helps the epic feel of the trailer (which is very well
represented in the actual film) a lot.
• The Inception trailer is considered to be the perfect balance between showing
style and not betraying substance, showing just enough to convince the audience
that Inception is a very stunning and innovative movie, that actually ended up
being a huge hit (Nolan's third-biggest hit, behind The Dark Knight and The Dark
Knight Rises).

Good Trailer, Bad Trailer - The Art Behind Trailers
(The Cosmonaut Variety Hour)
• This video talks about why trailers are effective in building up hype for
a product (like a movie, video game or TV series) and how a good
trailer would sell a lot of what it's trying to promote. CVH goes through
three trailers that he thinks do everything that is needed to make a
trailer work, these trailers being for the movies Alien, Inception and
Star Wars: The Force Awakens. CVH also mentions some trailers that he
doesn't like, with these trailers being for the movies How to Train Your
Dragon 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
• When CVH talks about the Alien trailer, he mentions that it's quick, it's
fast and it's adrenaline-pumping, while only revealing that there's a
scary alien on a spaceship. While addressing the 'Star Wars: The Force
Awakens' trailer, he mentions how it (and all the other Star Wars
trailers) have the advantage of being exceptionally recognizable, given
that Star Wars is one of the most famous brands in all of film history.
• As well as this, CVH gives some tips to budding filmmakers about what
makes a good trailer, and I plan to use these tips to make my FMP
trailer as good as it can be.

How To Create A Movie Poster in
Photoshop (Nemanja Sekulic)
• This video is a tutorial that goes through how to
create an interesting film poster in the program
Adobe Photoshop. It goes through exactly what
functions of Photoshop to use to create the
things you want in a professional-looking poster.
• I plan to follow this guide and add my own style
to the steps shown in said guide in order to
create my own posters for my Monty Oum
docufilm.
• On the right of this slide is a very rough draft of
my first idea for a potential poster for my Monty
Oum docufilm. It features the aforementioned
Oum, and Ruby Rose (not to be confused with
the actress of the same name), the main
character of RWBY, the series Monty worked on
from 2012 to his death.
