Videogames, the movie
I then looked into some existing documentaries related to videogames
as that is the subject I want to cover in my documentary as I think it
matches lots of young peoples interests so it will be entertaining for the
target audience and will be suitable for the brief.
One of the previous videogame documentaries, Videogame The movie started off with a montage
showcasing the development of videogames over the years. It started off showcasing older Videogames
like arcade videogames such as Donkey kong, pac man, Street fighter sct. It then showed games from
the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES for short), moving into the 90’s with Nintendo 64 era
moving into some of the first 3D videogames which defined the future of videogames. Games like Super
Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of time. The montage finishes off with clips from more
modern consoles such as games from the 2000’s such as games from the Wii, playstation 2 and xbox 360
It then Follows the montage with some interviews with some Videogame producers Such as Hideo
Kojima, The creator of Metal Gear Solid which is a stealth adventure game originally releasing on the
PlayStation 2. He proceeds to talk about how videogames evolve over the years just like movies and
books and that they will be forever apart of our culture. He also explains how they have effected us and
are apart of our lifes and will continue to do so in the future.
It then goes into some statistics such as at the time of 2013, the average gae players age is 30, Even
though its an outdated statistic as its 10 years old, it could be a good idea of the type of things I could
include and make it relevant to my target audience.
It then talks about the uses of how in the modern age with videogame consoles, you can now do other
things, such as watch videos/ streams through YouTube, Netflix and twitch as that is supported on the
Xbox and PlayStation. On some consoles you can also use Spotify so you can listen to your own music
while you play. So it explains how things have advanced and that videogame consoles have multiple
purposes other than playing games. It then explains how 62% of gamers play with others weather its in
person in the same room or online. So videogames also let you collaborate and socialize with others so it
therefore allows you to chat and make friends. It also mentions how now in the modern age that
parents can set time limits so their children aren't playing their games for an unhealthy amount of time.
So it therefore counterargues any fact that it is bad for young people as they can play their limited time
and do other things while still enjoying videogames. There's many more statistics but I wont go through
them all as it is a long documentary, but its important to note that statistics are important in a
documentary in order to educate the audience.
They go back to doing interviews to ask some modern day videogame developers “who was the father
of videogames” or in a formal way, who was the best and most inspirational videogame creator. One of
the most popular responses was Nolen Bushnell who was the creator of the Atari systems which was
one of the first videogame systems and was really popular in its day for what it could achieve at the
time. The second most common answer is “Shigeru Miyamoto” who is responsible for creating most of
the most iconic Nintendo games like Mario, Star Fox, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong and Pikmin.
They also include some archive footage seen in black and white to show some of the earliest
development stages of the first Gaming computer. This is interesting to me as a viewer as it tells a story
of something long ago that happened before I was born but it is fascinating as it is still something I am
interested in. I want to try and include something like this in my documentary if I can but will be hard as
I don’t own archive footage so I wil have to credit my source if I do.
It then shows some gameplay footage of one of the first popular Atari games which is Pong. A Tennis
style game where you can only move your block up and down and you have to stop the other player
getting it past you. A bit like Tennis or Air Hockey. I want to include gameplay in my documentary as it
imerses the audience into what it is al about and the audience can relate to their experiences with
playing videogaes for the first time and how their first videogame impacted them. It shows how the
technology has advanced because obviously it is different to what it is now. They also talk about the
graphic and specs of older consoles to give people an idea on how different it was compared to modern
consoles. And they talk about the first videogame console called the Magnavox Machiene releasing in
1972
They quickly move on to talk about the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) releasing in 1985 and
showcase some of the TV adverts t promote it at the time, obviously not the standard of modern day
adverts. Will Wheaton refers to Nostalgia in when looking back on older videogames to what happened
in our lives at the time of us paying that game. This is important as lots of young people will relate to
this so its something I want to mention in my documentary. As apart of gaming technology impacting
young peoples lives is the memories that game creates within your real life as well as your memory
playing the game. This is something I could ask my audience in an interview to be featured in my
documentary.
They Do an interview with the former president of Nintendo, “Reggie Fils Aime” to talk about when the
Nintendo Entertainment System and how that impacted young and old peoples lives and how that
defined peoples childhoods. Because for many people today, this was heir first videogame console. One
thing that stood out to affect people with the NES with how unique it was at the time. 8 bit graphics for
videogames was the newest and best thing so it blew peoples minds. Also the games were so unique to
anything seen before so it was an all knew experience that people hadn't experienced before.
Another thing I liked that they included in this documentary is the inclusion of insert shots. This is done
to show up close the person playing the videogame. This shows an object up close in this case the
controller which shows the audience what they are doing. This is a good technique to draw the
audiences attention to a certain object which shows them what they are doing. This is immediately
followed up by an over the shoulder shot to show what they are controlling with the controller. When
you quickly flash between the shots of a insert shot of the controller and an over the shoulder shot of
the gameplay it shows that the person in the shot is doing this. If you just had the shot of the gameplay
and no insert of the controller, than we would assume that the person is just watching a video of
gameplay or is just watching a TV show. So by using more shots, it makes the scene more detailed and
tells the audience a lot about what is going on without you having to narrate to the audience what is
happening.
