Cross-cultural Nonverbal Gestures
China and Canada
 China
 Non verbal cues are crucial to improved global competition.
For example- While doing business with someone from
China it is important to know that the Chinese find it rude
and offensive to point with an index finger. Instead you are
supposed to use your whole hand-open palmed when
pointing
 Canada
 While doing global business with someone from Canada it
is important to know that in regards of a non-verbal
language, shaking a Canadians hand without making eye
contact is considered to be very rude, so it is very
important to show them your respect by making eye
contact during a handshake.
Mexico
 The Mexican culture is very friendly and affectionate.
 Stay close by a person while conversing, and don’t let an
interference of personal space make you feel uncomfortable.
Japan
 The Japanese culture is much different than the Mexican
culture.
 It is appropriate not to show a lot of affection or overt
emotion, such as hugging.
 Instead show you are paying attention while conversing by
making eye contact and silently nodding while someone is
talking.
Mexico and Japan
Germany and South Korea
 Germany
 It’s considered rude to tuck your hands in your pockets
while conversing with a person.
 This can come across as uninterested or too relaxed.
 South Korea
 When you’re leaving a meeting, make sure to bow to
everyone in the room to show respect to everyone
present.
France
 In France, it is proper to give a business card to every
individual in the room versus one person.
England
 It is considered inappropriate to use effusive language
during a business meeting.
 This includes words and phrases with excessive
emotions and certain types of body languages that
involve invading an individual’s personal space.
France and England
India
 If you lose your temper and lose face, then you are
proven to be unworthy of respect and trusted
Taiwan
 Putting your arm around another shoulder, winking, and
pointing with your index finger are all considered to be
rude, Instead point use an open hand.
India and Taiwan
Things to Remember:
 Follow the cultural traditions of the country you’re doing
business with.
 Be aware of nonverbal signs such as body language, eye
contact, facial expressions, and hand gestures when
interacting with people from a different country.
 Embrace new cultures and learn from your experience!
Nonverbal training can improve cross-cultural relationships
because showing others you respect their culture can open
doors, and make your company successful in global
competition.
How can nonverbal language training
improve global competition?
