2. WHAT’S THIS ALL ABOUT?
Nestled between Wales and the North Devon coast in England, Lundy is the
largest island in the Bristol Channel.
In 2005 it was named as Britain’s 10th greatest natural wonder in a poll by the
Radio Times, due to its astounding natural beauty and small size of roughly three
miles by half a mile.
Sailing from either Bideford or Ilfracombe, the MS Oldenburg ferries passengers
and supplies to Lundy at least three times per week, with the crossing itself taking
roughly two hours each way.
Although English is the first language on the island, the Cornish language is
spoken throughout the region.
3. ATTRACTIONS
We’ve selected our top 5 things to see and do in Lundy:
Marine conservation zone: Lundy is home to England’s only marine conservation zone, where visitors will be
treated to some of the finest examples of rocky reefs in Britain.
Snorkel Safaris: Discover the rich marine life off the coast of Lundy by heading on a Snorkel Safari.
Marisco Castle: Dating back to the 13th century, Marisco Castle sits on a clifftop and is one of the island’s
more popular attractions.
Lundy Letterboxes: Whether you’re an adult or child, take up the challenge of finding the 27 letterboxes
scattered throughout the island.
Climbing: The challenge of the 60 rock faces on Lundy continues to attract climbers throughout the year.
Climbing restrictions are in place between March and July in order to protect breeding seabirds.
4. WEATHER
Lundy’s mild climate is influenced by the north Atlantic drift.
Spring temperatures hover at a comfortable 10°C, and while showers are brief, Lundy
receives up to 75mm of rainfall during the season.
During the summer months of June to August, temperatures rise to an average of
17°C, with highs of around 20°C towards the end of the season. The occasional
shower will appear, but not too often.
From September to October, cooler weather greets tourists. If you visit during these
months, you can expect highs of around 14°C. Temperatures can sometimes rise to
21°C in October, but the heat is offset by winds of up to 111kph.
In November and December, winter brings lows of around 4°C. Rainfall is most
common during this season.
5. CLOTHING
The rocky terrain of Lundy makes comfortable hiking shoes a necessity
if you’re to explore the island’s natural beauty to the fullest.
Although generally mild, the weather can quickly change so it’s best to
pack layers of warmer clothing and waterproof outerwear, especially
when travelling during the winter months.
6. IDEAL FOR…?
The remote location and self-catering accommodation ensure
that Lundy remains a popular destination for any tourist looking
for peace and quiet.
