English was brought to Australia in 1788 by people who came
from all over England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Migration
from the British Isles has continued from the earliest days and
these migrants have been joined by others, initially from northern
Europe, and since the 1950s from southern Europe and the
Middle East, and in more recent times from Asia.
