2. Heterotopic Space
Heterotopia are « real places – places that do exist and
that are formed in the very founding of society – which
are something like counter-sites, a kind of effectively
enacted utopia in which the real sites, all the other real
sites that can be found within the culture, are
simultaneously represented, contested and inverted …
[they are] outside of all places, even though it may be
possible to indicate their location in reality. »
~Michel Foucault

5. Entrance to Heterotopia
Heterotopia always presupposes a system of opening and closing, which both
isolates it and makes it penetrable. A heterotopia is not accessible for everybody
as a public space, but rather poses certain criteria.

7. Blending Realities
Heterotopia is capable of juxtaposing in a single real
space several spaces, several sites that are in
themselves incompatible
• Alamo stands on an • Hill Country to Northwest
empty, flat plain • Rolling hills, more fertile,
• Desert sandstone cliffs
• Areas are blended –
Riverwalk winds through
them all

8. Hegemonic Function
A heterotopia can change its function because
of changes in the society that occur over time.
Any heterotopia has a specific function with
regard to the society to which it is related.

9. Heterotopic Order
• Heterotopia always have a
function in relation to all the
places/spaces that remains
outside. Either in terms of
creating an illusional space
and reveals the ‘real’
spaces as built on
illusion, or by creating a
space that is another real
space – which is just as
perfect as our places are
messy and disjointed.

10. What does this mean?
Architectural design has strong but modifiable
effects on social behavior and users’ mood and
productivity and, to some extent, design features
also affect health and well-being.
~Ayers 2007
What happens to truth when the places and
spaces around us, such as the Gaylord Texan,
are heterotopia rather than real?
