I know several years back when you could make money online even by smiling in front of the monitor,
nobody cared about testing conversions...

To start your search engine marketing campaign from scratch, or to get more sales out of your SEO, it is a
lot wiser to run your selected keywords through PPC campaigns, so you could see which of them would
monetize the best. After that you should start building links to them to push them on page one of Google.
Building those links is pretty time-consuming and expensive as well, but you could just go to sites related
to your keyword and contact their owners to ask for a link back to your site. You could also use any of the
above mentioned link building strategies.
And of course going mobile will bring you some extra results, or maybe even better than Google.
