INTRODUCTION The Power of Local Background ★ Valrie Grant, Managing Director of GeoTechVision an ICT and location intelligence solutions company, learnt about the Flying Labs Network while attending a presentation in FIJI April 2018 ★ She was inspired to set up a lab at the Jamaican branch of operations of the company ★ The Jamaica Flying Labs was then launched in March 2019 ★ Core Team consists of 4 members

Self Introductions The Power of Local Sheree Cameron Flying Lab Coordinator & Technical Expert (GIS, Geomatics, UAVs) I naturally became a part of the Jamaica Flying Labs Team since it is an extension of the services and interests of the Geospatial Department at GeoTechVision. I am particularly appreciative of the mandate of our JFL in that we aim to; - sensitize youth about STEM in community engagement exercises - to be a part of humanitarian efforts using our technology. - promote capacity building and interact with a global community for team members JFL is a positive way for us to give back to the community!

- Who we are? - Jamaica Flying Labs, one of the first in the Caribbean region When were we created? - Created in 2018?Valrie Grant, Managing Director at GeoTechVision, first heard about Flying Labs network during a presentation in Fiji. From that inspiring moment, the plan was clear: set up a new branch with her team back in Jamaica, with the goal to sensitize the youth and the population at large about the positive application of drone technology. The backstory behind creating our flying labs.-
- How person became part of Flying Labs? - As an extension of our partnership at GTV I became involved in FLying Labs Started last year and have been involved in various projects. I like UAV’s data analysis and innovative technology solutions
- How person became part of Flying Labs? - Through working at GeoTechVision
- Dr. Edwards, Dr Earl Edwards is a senoir consultant at GTV and has been involved in the geospatial information industry for more than 25 years. He is currently one of the leading Enterprise GIS Consultants in the region and a lecturer in Geospatial Information Sciences at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, Trinidad.He is also actively involved in research and training related to the use of Enterprise GIS systems for Geo-Enabling organizations and the use of Unmanned Aerial Systems (Drones) for augmenting the acquisition of geospatial data. Valrie Grant is the founder and Managing Director of GeoTechVision, an ICT and Spatial Technologies company in Kingston Jamaica and Georgetown Guyana which is focused on delivering value through innovative solutions. With over 15 years of experience in the Geospatial Sciences with engagements spanning several territories across the Caribbean region, Valrie is helping government and corporate entities develop data driven geospatial solutions to address organizational challenges and meet corporate goals.
- To transform sectors such as agriculture, delivery and health by application of drone technology to increase productivity and efficiency To stimulate growth in these sectors by sensitizing stakeholders on the power of drones for social good To sensitize youth to career and life skills in the STEM and Robotics industry
- Project Description- Conducting an aerial survey of St Maarten (Dutch side) to collect drone imagery that could deliver Digital Terrain Models as well as Orthomosiacs primarily for disaster evaluation and secondary data building. Challenges- Not familiar with the island so when conducting project, resources were limited therefore took some time navigating the changes in terrain while collecting data Data files were very large and methods of transfer took some time each instance. Specifications for data quality varied based on methods of collection so processing could only do so much. Sharing the data intially had some issues, but got it right after few options were attempted. Took place in St Maarten, beneficiaries were St Maarten Government as well as world bank.
- Who- Young girls ages 12-16 How many- 5 students When- August 2019, 1 week
- Training for staff and group leaders. Critical in moving projects forward. Participation in webinars, clinics specifically the Global drone solutions course (remote pilot license). Our upcoming virtual camp
