4. What is stress???
• The term stress was first employed in a
biological context by the endocrinologist Hans
Selye in the 1930s.
• Stress is a term used to describe the body and
mind’s reaction to everyday tensions and
pressures
• Some stresses get you going and they are good
for you. However, when the stresses undermine
both our mental and physical health they are bad
• When the person perceives a threat, their
nervous system responds by releasing a flood of
stress hormones, including adrenaline and
cortisol.

affecting the individual.

harmful effects.
