2. How To Remove Wallpaper
So you are tired of your old wallpaper, or
perhaps you just moved into a home with tacky
old wallpaper and you need to get rid of it. How
to remove wallpaper? It’s a question that tends
to stress-out anyone who needs to tackle this
task, but the answer is surprisingly simple, and
the process is not as difficult as you might
imagine.
3. Is it Strippable Wallpaper?
Many wallpapers today are the easy strippable
kind, so you need to do a test to check what type
is on your walls. Pry a seam up on the edge using
a utility knife and tug the wallpaper down at an
angle, keeping both of your hands close to the
edge you are lifting. If the wallpaper peels off in
long sheets and does not leave and adhesive
residue, your paper is strippable and your
project will be super easy. To learn how to
remove wallpaper if it is not strippable… keep
reading.
4. Prepare Your Area
You will need to cover floors, furniture and
anything valuable you cannot remove from the
room with protective plastic drop cloths so these
surfaces and items do not get damaged in this
process. Shut off all circuit breakers that power
the area you will be working in. Removing older
wallpaper, or the types of wallpaper that
requires adhesive, will take a lot of water, and it
will be a very messy job.
5. Pull Off The Wallpaper Facing
Start near the ceiling at a corner where wallpaper
tends to be looser and use a putty knife to lift up the
edges of the wallpaper facing. Pull the wallpaper off
the wall at an angle using slow, steady pressure. The
backing will be left behind, and this is fine since in
the next step you will use water to soften and
remove it from the wall. The longer a wallpaper has
been on a wall, the more difficult it tends to be to
remove it, in cases where wallpaper is especially
difficult to remove, you may need special tools like
a scoring tool or an electric steamer.
6. Apply Water and Fabric Softener Or A
Chemical Wallpaper Stripper
In this step you may want to wear gloves to protect
your hands. You will need to either use one of the
commercially available spray-on wallpaper
strippers, or you can use warm water and add a cap
full of liquid softener per liter of water. Then take a
thick sponge or paint roller and apply the solution
onto the wallpaper working with water as warm as
you can reasonably stand it. If you use water, let it
soak for roughly 15 minutes, then scrape the paper
from the wall with a putty knife, you may have to
repeat this process several times to get all the
residue. If you use a spray-on wallpaper stripper,
follow the instructions on the bottle.
7. Patch and Repair Any Wall Damage
After you have removed every bit of the wallpaper,
and you have allowed the wall to completely dry
(overnight recommended), you can begin the
process of prepping the wall for fresh paint, or a new
wallpaper… strippable this time! Patch up damage
with joint compound and sand the rough patches
smooth with a hand sander, making sure to wear a
mask to protect against breathing in the dust. If you
plan to apply fresh wallpaper, you can use an acrylic
primer that is formulated for wallpaper application
that makes removing the wallpaper much easier in
the future. Now you know how to remove wallpaper!
