Bella T. Wong Bulletin #6
Superintendent of Schools October 9, 2009
The Superintendent’s Bulletin is posted weekly on Fridays on our website. It provides timely, relevant
information about meetings, professional development opportunities, curriculum and program development,
grant awards, and school committee news. The bulletin is also the official vehicle for job postings. Please
read the bulletin regularly and use it to inform colleagues of meetings and other school news.
Dear Colleagues,
As you may be aware, the Advisory Committee has issued a 1% FY11 budget guideline for all town
departments, including the schools. Advisory is also recommending an increase of $750,000 to
compensate for anticipated reductions in circuit breaker reimbursement for certain expenses related to
student special education services. The School Committee, in turn, has requested that I present to them a
budget that maintains level service and accommodates enrollment changes, a recommended list of
improvements to program, and a budget that satisfies the Advisory Committee guideline.
On Monday afternoon, all school administrators came together and received direction on how to build their
budget requests for FY11. They were asked to create level service budgets, offer suggestions for
improvements, and offer suggestions for cost savings. Ultimately, these individual budgets will be
incorporated into the superintendent's budget or budgets that will meet the School Committee's direction. I
will present these budgets to you on December 7 and then to School Committee on December 8.
Over the last ten years, the final operating budget has never had an increase lower than 3%. We will
work hard to create a level service budget that will require as low a percent increase as possible.
However, for this to be equal to a 1% plus $750,000 increase over current budget will be very, very
challenging. There is a lot of work to be done between now and December. As always, I will keep you
apprised.

New Payroll Option
Effective with the October 5, 2009 pay check the Town of Wellesley will be able to provide your weekly direct
deposit pay stub to you via e-mail instead of by paper. By making this choice employees can help the town save
money and reduce the amount of paper that finds its way into the trash. If you choose this option, you will
receive your pay stub via e-mail on Friday when payroll is run instead of waiting to the following Tuesday for the
manual distribution. The e-mail will be password protected for confidentiality purposes. The pay date and actual
funds distribution date will not change and will remain on Tuesday. This program is voluntary so you can continue
to receive the paper copy if you prefer. If you did not receive the form in the mail and would like to select this new
option, please contact the Treasurer’s Office at Town Hall. (781.431.1019, Ext. 2266)
