Network Requirements
Instructor’s Computer
• Internet connection, for items such as registration and reporting
• Access to http://insight360services.einstruction.com, http://reports360.einstruction.com and
http://insight360.einstruction.com
• Whitelist Insight 360 on firewalls, including local machines, such as Windows Firewall
• Insight 360 optionally uses IGMP multicast to make joining from teacher and student mobile devices easier (this is
called service discovery). Utilizing IGMP allows the instructors and students to select their class and automatically
connect (compared to using an IP Address to connect to the classroom). For this to work, IGMP and multicast must
be enabled on the wireless network. Insight 360 uses the IGMP address of 239.255.107.13.
• The following TCP ports should be allowed to receive connections:
• 65007 - To accept connections from teacher mobile device
• 65009 - To accept connections from student mobile devices for Premium
• 65008 - To accept connections from student voting automated Pulse devices
• Also, UDP port 31009 must be open to allow receipt of multicast UDP messages if service discovery is desired.
• If your deployment includes third party integrations via Insight 360’s HTTP API, then TCP port 64250 must also be
open on the instructor’s computer to receive HTTP requests from the third party application.

INSTALLATION
There are four ways to install the Insight 360 software:
Instructions for each type of installation are described on the next pages.
Some important information about installing and using Insight 360:
• Once Insight 360 is installed, it is important that the instructors, not the IT Admin, register and activate the software.
See page 16 for more information on registering and activating.
• Insight 360 automatically starts on startup. It also ‘listens’ for eInstruction devices that can be used with Insight 360,
so they will be detected when they are connected to the computer. This process can be terminated by pressing
Crtl+Shift+Q on both Windows and Mac.
• Insight 360 supports annotation on the main/primary display. If you are using multiple monitors or displays, such as a
projector, make sure the display you want to show annotation on is set as the main/primary monitor. You can also
setup a secondary monitor, such as projector, to mirror the main/primary display.

Insight 360 Custom Settings
This feature is available with Insight 360 v2.3.1+
Insight 360 will look for an xml file called CustomSettings in the top-level Data directory to populate settings on the
Preferences, Registration/Activation, and Mobile Devices tabs. If the file does not exist, the program defaults will be
used. If the file exists, and the contents parsed correctly, the normal defaults will be overwritten by those in the
CustomSettings file. This feature exists to help IT departments in large deployments of Insight 360 to be able to change
Insight 360's default settings and/or to help users complete the registration and activation process.
The CustomSettings.xml file must be in the Insight360 local data folder (where the log files are stored), NOT in the data
directory itself:
Platform Path Name
Windows C:{User}AppDataLocalInsight360CustomSettings.xml
Mac OS /Users/username/Library/Application Support/Insight360/CustomSettings.xml
NOTE
The Custom Settings feature does NOT modify the registration and
activation process in anyway - it merely allows the registration fields to be
pre-populated by the CustomSettings file. The CustomSettings file can be
unique to an individual machine/user or it can be generalized for a set of
users.
Insight 360™ 12

Below is a sample of the XML tags that may be used with the Custom Settings feature:
The above example includes all of the supported custom settings available in the 2.3.1 release.
Available XML Tags
Tag Explanation
CustomSettings This tag is used to encapsulate all the custom settings to be read by the
software
OneTimeInitialization If true, settings will only be read in lieu of the defaults on first run (and
thereafter as saved by the user). If false, values in the custom settings file will
be used each time the settings tabs are loaded.
UseStudentId True or false
UseStickerId True or false. UseStudentId and UseStickerId must be opposite if both are
specified.
StartingStickerId A positive integer (1 or higher)
SendFeedbackToStudentDevices True or false (true means box is checked)
PromptTeacherOnStudentRejoin True or false (true means box is checked)
MobileSettingsUseConstructedResponse True or false (true means box is checked)
MobileSettingsRequireSessionCode True or false (true means box is checked)
MobileSettingsEnableWebAccess True or false (true means box is checked)
RegistrationCustomSettings An encapsulation of the registration form fields
Country A value in the drop-down list (default = null)
Title A value in the drop-down list (default = null)
Insight 360™ 13

*Values can be determined by using the NCES Public School search at
http://nces.ed.gov/ccd/schoolsearch/index.asp and/or http://nces.ed.gov/ccd/districtsearch/index.asp
Other notes:
• If a tag in the CustomSettings file is not formatted correctly, i.e., it is not understood by the software, it will be ignored
and the last saved or default value will be used instead.
• Preferences and Mobile Devices settings tabs are loaded on Insight 360 Director restart. See the flowchart below for
more detail.
• The Registration/Activation settings tab is loaded whenever the tab is loaded. If the tab is already loaded (i.e., visible
to the user) when a custom settings value is changed, the new value will NOT be read until the tab is reloaded (click
on another settings tab and click back on the Registration/Activation tab). See the flowchart below for more detail.
• The Registration and Activation processed are not changed by this feature. This feature only affects the values of the
fields on the Registration/Activation tab. Changing a field value will not change the registration record unless the
registration is submitted. Changing the SRC field value will not change the license unless the license is activated. Re-
activating a license will not affect the license terms in any way.
The software can load settings from three sources: defaults, user settings, or the CustomSettings file. This flowchart
details how the program decides which settings are restored on which conditions.
FirstName A character string
LastName A character string
Email A character string (checked for format on submission)
State A value in the drop-down list (default = null)
SoftwareRegistrationCode A character string (checked for validity on submission)
NCESDistrictId A value in the "District" drop-down, using the NCES index value*
NCESSchoolId A value in the "School/Institution" drop-down, using the NCES index value*

USING INSIGHT 360 WITH REIMAGING
Many organizations use enterprise solutions that revert PCs back to a predefined state, upon the PC reboot. If your
organization employs such a solution, you will want to ensure that the various pieces of Insight 360 are configured
correctly, for optimal experience.
Below you will find a list of files and directories, used by Insight 360, that should not be modified, as well as a list of
minimum user permissions needed to run the software.
• The paths listed are the default paths. If a custom install was performed, these paths may vary.
• Computers must be unlocked, or “thawed,” for any permanent changes to take effect.
• The minimum permissions and ability to reimage on reboot are with the assumption that Insight 360 has been
installed, registered, and activated before being placed minimum privileges (or reimage) on reboot setting.

CHANGING THE DEFAULT DATA DIRECTORY LOCATION
If using a custom path, choose the location carefully. If it is a network location or shared location that other users have
access to, there is potential for data corruption. If the custom data path cannot be found, read from, or written to, then the
application will revert to the default data path.
How to change the default data directory location...
1 If Insight 360 is open, close the program and terminate the Insight 360 Director by pressing Crtl+Shift+Q.
2 Open SteamPunkSettings.xml in a text editor. The file can be found in the following locations:
• Windows – c:Program FileseInstructionInsight 360ToolsConfigurationSteamPunkSettings.xml
• Mac – /Applications/eInstruction/Insight 360/Tools/Insight 360 Director.app/Resources/Configuration/
SteamPunkSettings.xml

<SimulateSessionVoting>false</SimulateSessionVoting>
<SRSReceiver>true</SRSReceiver>
<CustomDataPath>P:Insight 360</CustomDataPath>
</DesktopHostSettings>
4 Open Insight 360. On startup, a test file (TestWrite.dat) and an Insight 360 folder with a new database will be created
in the custom path location.
NOTE
Replace “P:Insight 360” with the actual desired location. Do not change
any other parameters.
WARNING
Use of a network location or drive for a custom data path should only be
considered if:
• Network has ample bandwidth to support the frequent read/writes to the
custom data path.
• Custom data path is not shared by multiple machines. This path must
be unique per registered user/computer.

FOR OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE WITH INSIGHT 360
There are many things that can affect the performance of your Insight 360 software. Since we cannot cover every
network design, and as each one is different, here are some general ideas to consider:
Networking Considerations
• Ensure that your network has enough bandwidth to handle your current data traffic plus the added data traffic from
your Insight 360 software, especially during peak load times. Please work with your network administrator or vendor
for help.
• It is recommended to have the instructor’s computer, iPad and student iPad applications running on the same VLAN.
Since this is not always possible and student and instructor VLANs are created to keep them separated for security
purposes, try to limit the amount of hops between the student and instructor installations as well as between the
instructor iPad and the instructor’s computer running the Insight 360 application. Additionally, if the student and
instructor installations are on different VLANs, it is important to ensure that the necessary ports are opened between
VLANs.
VLAN Navigation
Many districts have chosen to use virtual local area networks (VLAN) to segregate network traffic in an effort to
increase quality of service and security. Insight 360 can navigate these configurations with the use of port forwarding
policies on firewalls and Ethernet switches. Below is a list of the ports and associated protocols in use with Insight 360.
• If separate VLANs as well as Intrusion Detection Services (IDS) or Intrusion Protection Services (IPS) are in use
between VLANs, there is a possibility that some latency could be added to a student or teacher’s experience. This is
because the packets being sent between systems will be broken down by IDS/IPS and inspected for malicious intent.
If you experience latency with IDS/IPS in between VLANs, you may want to consider making an exception for these
applications. Please work with your IDS/IPS equipment vendor to determine how to do this.
• Make sure that all network ports in use for Insight 360 are using optimal settings by checking that they are using full
duplex and the largest bandwidth setting supported by your network. Ports on your networking equipment that are left
to “auto negotiate” will sometime default to lesser settings when there are incompatibilities between networking
equipment. This means that manual settings are needed to correct this behavior.
Wireless Networking Considerations
Since the student and teacher iPad applications rely heavily on your wireless infrastructure, the following factors play an
important role in ensuring an optimal experience:
• Ensure that your wireless access points are capable of handling the bandwidth requirements for your current
• data traffic plus the added data traffic from your Insight 360 software, especially during peak load times.
Port Protocol Function
31009 UDP Multicasting for connection facilitation
65007 TCP Data for teacher app
65008 TCP Data for student app
64250 HTTP API access for partner integrations
Insight 360™ 18
einstruction.com/insight360
• Most wireless access point vendors will provide tools that provide a view into your wireless access point’s bandwidth
utilization. Please refer to your wireless vendor’s documentation for help, and work with your network administrator or
vendor. Please note that while your wired network may provide 1GB of bandwidth, most wireless access points can
only provide a fraction of this bandwidth and could become overwhelmed even if your wired network is nowhere near
saturation.
• The bandwidth available to a wireless device is directly proportional to the wireless signal strength the device receives.
Therefore, it is important to ensure that wireless access points are laid out in an optimal fashion to ensure that each
device in use has the best signal possible.
Quality of Service (QOS)
QOS is the ability to provide different priorities to different applications, users, or network data flows, or to guarantee a
certain level of performance to a data flow over your network. See page 11 for VLAN Navigation.
If you experience latency with your Insight 360 application, it could be the result of network saturation during peak load
times. Therefore, it may be necessary to implement QOS on your network to ensure that your Insight 360 application
network traffic is prioritized and receives the necessary amount of bandwidth to provide an optimal experience. Please
refer to your networking equipment documentation and/or your networking vendor for help implementing QOS on your
network.
Anti Virus
While Anti-Virus software is necessary, it also has the propensity to slow computers down and could interfere with the
performance of Insight 360, especially on older machines. Additionally, anti-virus has been known to interfere with the
detection of HID devices and may include firewalls that block ports necessary for Insight 360. If you are experiencing
performance issues or issues connecting your devices to a computer running Insight 360 you can rule out anti-virus as
the cause by temporarily disabling the anti-virus software. If this resolves the issue then you should work with your anti-
virus vendor to make the necessary changes to your anti-virus software to resolve these issues.
Multicasting
If you are using multiple VLANs in your network and would like to use Multicasting, you will need to contact your vendor
to find out what is recommended as their best practice for enabling Multicasting on your networking equipment.
The Multicast address is 239.255.107.13 and must be opened between VLANs.
For information on how to test if your network supports multicasting, please visit:
https://support.einstruction.com/entries/21208936-Testing-for-Network-Multicast-for-Mobi-360-for-iPad-Use
Alternative to enabling multicast
The Insight 360 Teacher App can work without using Multicast on your network. In this case, the students will need to
manually type in the IP address of the desktop computer that has the Insight 360 software installed on it. The iPad will
remember this address, but with most networks using dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP), it may require the
user to re-type it occasionally to connect to the class if the IP address on the instructor’s computer ever changes.

WEB ACCESS
Insight 360 Web Access allows students to participate in an Insight 360 session using nearly any laptop, smartphone, or
other device with an internet browser.
If the student device goes to sleep, they will be removed from the class and will need to rejoin. For more information,
please visit: https://support.einstruction.com/entries/21571904-Mobile-Devices-using-Web-Access-will-be-
dropped-from-the-class-if-device-goes-into-sleep-mode
Minimum Browser Requirements
How It Works
1 The instructor opens the Insight 360 software on their computer and enables Web Access in My Settings > Mobile
Devices.
2 The instructor starts a class using a Mobi 360 or the Teacher App.
3 The student opens a web browser (for example: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome) and goes to
Insight360.einstruction.com. The Insight Online tab displays Join Class at the top.
4 The student types the Student ID and Session Code into the corresponding boxes
Only the Session Code is required. The teacher can display the session code by tapping Class/Session Code on the
Mobi 360 or Insight 360 Teacher app
5 The student clicks Join.
If a Student ID was entered in Step 4, a welcome message will appear with their name. If the name is correct, click
Proceed to Class. Otherwise, click That’s Not Me and repeat steps 4-5 with the corrected information.
If a Student ID was not entered and the student wants to join anonymously, click Yes, I’m Sure. This allows the student
to join the class but their answers will not be credited to their name or Student ID.

NETWORK FIREWALL AND CONTENT FILTER
Insight 360 periodically checks for updates, and must be connected to the internet to do so. This is one of the reasons
that having internet access is required, along with other features of the software, such as reporting. The updating
process also checks for firmware updates for any connected eInstruction 360 devices.
• It is important that the instructor does not disconnect or turn off devices during the update process.
• Instructors must have the correct privileges to install software updates.
How to update Insight 360
1 If an update is available, a notification will be displayed on the Insight 360 home page. Click About to take note of the
current version number because you will need this to confirm that the update was successful.
2 Click the update notification in the Message Center on the home page.
3 An update screen will appear and the software will restart to complete the update.
4 After the update is complete, check About to make sure the new version number is displayed
Network Firewall
The firewall must allow communication between your computer and eInstruction’s Insight 360 update servers, which are
located online. You must have access to: http://insight360services.einstruction.com/StarfishCloudServices.
If you are experiencing any of the following problems, it is most likely due to your network firewall blocking
communication to the above URL:
• District list not populating when registering the software.
• Error messages when registering.
• Error messages when updating firmware or software.

MODIFYING EXPORTED REPORTS
Insight 360 allows you to modify the format of an exported report. The instructor can do this on a single computer, or the
IT Department can define the format and send the file format to multiple computers.
Single Computer Export
1 Open Insight 360 and click My Results.
2 Select a report.
3 To modify the format of the Export to CSV report, select Show Advanced Export Options.
4 You can now select which columns to include or exclude. You will see one drop-down box for each column that will
appear in the report. The first drop-down will appear in the first column of the report. The second drop-down will appear
in the second column, and so on. Select where you would like each column to appear, or select None if you do not
want that column to appear in the report.
5 The settings are saved until you go back into the Show Advanced Export Options and modify the format.
Multiple Computer Export
Similar to defining the export for a single computer, an IT Department could define an export format and push that format
out to multiple instructors’ computers.
1 Follow steps 1 through 4 above.
2 You have now created this file: CsvExportMap.xml. It is located in the DATA_PATH directory. If you have installed
Insight 360 in its default location, the file would be located at AppDataLocalInsight360Data
3 This file can now be pushed out to the instructors’ computers and placed in the same location as above.
4 When the instructor clicks Export to CSV, the data will be exported in the format you have defined.
5 If the instructor goes into Show Advanced Export Options and modifies the export format, the data will no longer export
in the format that you defined.

VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS
Many client applications of virtualized environments come in the form of a software client or a dedicated hardware thin
client like a Cisco VXC 2211/12. The chart below illustrates the network setup and the thin clients that may be in the
classroom. The goal is to configure your system so eInstruction products (Mobi 360, Pulse / Spark 360 receivers, etc.)
can be plugged into the USB ports of the clients and have them successfully communicate to the virtualized desktop on
the server.
You will need to modify the configuration of your client device to pass-through the USB information from all the
eInstruction devices that you are utilizing.
For example, the Cisco VXC 2211/12 has a client GUI that allows the VID (Vendor ID) and PID (Product ID) of various
USB devices to be entered as “bridged devices.” By entering the VID and PID numbers for all of the eInstruction devices
in use, the Cisco thin client will allow all of the USB information from the device to pass-through to the server-based
desktop image. In most cases this will allow a proper connection. The text of the Cisco description of the client feature is
below along with a screen shot of where the VID/PIDs are entered. Again, your environment may be different, but the
principles are the same.
Below is a list of eInstruction product families and the individual VID and PID identifiers. There is usually no harm in
entering all of the IDs. However, you may choose to enter only the product families that you currently use. There is some
duplication between product families as some devices are used across several products. Some client systems want you
to enter the full hex ID of the device (“0x34F”) and others only the part that follows the “x” (“34F”).
For previous eInstruction devices please contact eInstruction Sales Support.
Please enter each of the above devices if using CPS and/or Response.
* Only need to enter one receiver based on your purchase.

  • 6. Insight 360™ 6 einstruction.com/insight360 Network Requirements Instructor’s Computer • Internet connection, for items such as registration and reporting • Access to http://insight360services.einstruction.com, http://reports360.einstruction.com and http://insight360.einstruction.com • Whitelist Insight 360 on firewalls, including local machines, such as Windows Firewall • Insight 360 optionally uses IGMP multicast to make joining from teacher and student mobile devices easier (this is called service discovery). Utilizing IGMP allows the instructors and students to select their class and automatically connect (compared to using an IP Address to connect to the classroom). For this to work, IGMP and multicast must be enabled on the wireless network. Insight 360 uses the IGMP address of 239.255.107.13. • The following TCP ports should be allowed to receive connections: • 65007 - To accept connections from teacher mobile device • 65009 - To accept connections from student mobile devices for Premium • 65008 - To accept connections from student voting automated Pulse devices • Also, UDP port 31009 must be open to allow receipt of multicast UDP messages if service discovery is desired. • If your deployment includes third party integrations via Insight 360’s HTTP API, then TCP port 64250 must also be open on the instructor’s computer to receive HTTP requests from the third party application. Insight 360 Teacher App • Teacher mobile device should be on the same local area network as the instructor’s computer • Local high-speed Wi-Fi Insight 360 Student App • Student mobile devices should be on the same local area network as the instructor’s computer • Local high-speed Wi-Fi
  • 7. Insight 360™ 7 einstruction.com/insight360 LICENSING Insight 360 is available as a single-user license or multiple-user license. If two individuals are using Insight 360 at the same time, they must have two licenses. A single-user license can be installed on two computers. For example: • You can install Insight 360 on two computers (such as a desktop and a laptop), but the software cannot be used at the same time. • You can install Insight 360 on a single computer under different user accounts, but the software cannot be used at the same time. Additional license for evaluation and training The license also allows for an additional copy of Insight 360 to be installed in a testing lab for evaluation, or for training purposes, as long as these copies are not used for instructional purposes with students. Licensing Options and Corresponding Components Insight 360 Corresponding Component Insight 360 Standard Edition Insight 360 software Teacher App Insight 360 Premium Edition Insight 360 software Teacher App Student App Insight 360 Web Access Student response via a Web Browser when the Web Access add-on is purchased with Standard or Premium Edition. • 8. Insight 360™ 8 einstruction.com/insight360 INSTALLATION There are four ways to install the Insight 360 software: Instructions for each type of installation are described on the next pages. Some important information about installing and using Insight 360: • Once Insight 360 is installed, it is important that the instructors, not the IT Admin, register and activate the software. See page 16 for more information on registering and activating. • Insight 360 automatically starts on startup. It also ‘listens’ for eInstruction devices that can be used with Insight 360, so they will be detected when they are connected to the computer. This process can be terminated by pressing Crtl+Shift+Q on both Windows and Mac. • Insight 360 supports annotation on the main/primary display. If you are using multiple monitors or displays, such as a projector, make sure the display you want to show annotation on is set as the main/primary monitor. You can also setup a secondary monitor, such as projector, to mirror the main/primary display. • Visit our website to view our video tutorials: www.einstruction.com/insight-360-product-support • Install the software using the disk • Download the software from einstruction.com • Silent (or Network) Installation • Imaging/ghosting

  • 11. Insight 360™ 11 einstruction.com/insight360 Insight 360 Custom Settings This feature is available with Insight 360 v2.3.1+ Insight 360 will look for an xml file called CustomSettings in the top-level Data directory to populate settings on the Preferences, Registration/Activation, and Mobile Devices tabs. If the file does not exist, the program defaults will be used. If the file exists, and the contents parsed correctly, the normal defaults will be overwritten by those in the CustomSettings file. This feature exists to help IT departments in large deployments of Insight 360 to be able to change Insight 360's default settings and/or to help users complete the registration and activation process. The CustomSettings.xml file must be in the Insight360 local data folder (where the log files are stored), NOT in the data directory itself: Platform Path Name Windows C:{User}AppDataLocalInsight360CustomSettings.xml Mac OS /Users/username/Library/Application Support/Insight360/CustomSettings.xml NOTE The Custom Settings feature does NOT modify the registration and activation process in anyway - it merely allows the registration fields to be pre-populated by the CustomSettings file. The CustomSettings file can be unique to an individual machine/user or it can be generalized for a set of users.
  • 12. Insight 360™ 12 einstruction.com/insight360 Below is a sample of the XML tags that may be used with the Custom Settings feature: The above example includes all of the supported custom settings available in the 2.3.1 release. Available XML Tags Tag Explanation CustomSettings This tag is used to encapsulate all the custom settings to be read by the software OneTimeInitialization If true, settings will only be read in lieu of the defaults on first run (and thereafter as saved by the user). If false, values in the custom settings file will be used each time the settings tabs are loaded. UseStudentId True or false UseStickerId True or false. UseStudentId and UseStickerId must be opposite if both are specified. StartingStickerId A positive integer (1 or higher) SendFeedbackToStudentDevices True or false (true means box is checked) PromptTeacherOnStudentRejoin True or false (true means box is checked) MobileSettingsUseConstructedResponse True or false (true means box is checked) MobileSettingsRequireSessionCode True or false (true means box is checked) MobileSettingsEnableWebAccess True or false (true means box is checked) RegistrationCustomSettings An encapsulation of the registration form fields Country A value in the drop-down list (default = null) Title A value in the drop-down list (default = null)
  • 13. • 16. Insight 360™ 16 einstruction.com/insight360 CHANGING THE DEFAULT DATA DIRECTORY LOCATION If using a custom path, choose the location carefully. If it is a network location or shared location that other users have access to, there is potential for data corruption. If the custom data path cannot be found, read from, or written to, then the application will revert to the default data path. How to change the default data directory location... 1 If Insight 360 is open, close the program and terminate the Insight 360 Director by pressing Crtl+Shift+Q. 2 Open SteamPunkSettings.xml in a text editor. The file can be found in the following locations: • Windows – c:Program FileseInstructionInsight 360ToolsConfigurationSteamPunkSettings.xml • Mac – /Applications/eInstruction/Insight 360/Tools/Insight 360 Director.app/Resources/Configuration/ SteamPunkSettings.xml 3 Within the DeskTopHostSettings tag, add the CustomDataPath tag as shown in the example below (in red): <?xml version=”1.0” encoding=”utf-8” ?> <DesktopHostSettings xmlns:xsi=”http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance” xmlns:xsd=”http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema”> <EInstructionServiceUri>http://insight360services.einstruction.com/ StarfishCloudServices</EInstructionServiceUri> <WebClickerUri>http://insight360.einstruction.com</WebClickerUri> <GenerateTestData>false</GenerateTestData> <SimulateSessionVoting>false</SimulateSessionVoting> <SRSReceiver>true</SRSReceiver> <CustomDataPath>P:Insight 360</CustomDataPath> </DesktopHostSettings> 4 Open Insight 360. On startup, a test file (TestWrite.dat) and an Insight 360 folder with a new database will be created in the custom path location. NOTE Replace “P:Insight 360” with the actual desired location. Do not change any other parameters. WARNING Use of a network location or drive for a custom data path should only be considered if: • Network has ample bandwidth to support the frequent read/writes to the custom data path. • Custom data path is not shared by multiple machines. This path must be unique per registered user/computer.
  • 17. Insight 360™ 17 einstruction.com/insight360 FOR OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE WITH INSIGHT 360 There are many things that can affect the performance of your Insight 360 software. Since we cannot cover every network design, and as each one is different, here are some general ideas to consider: Networking Considerations • Ensure that your network has enough bandwidth to handle your current data traffic plus the added data traffic from your Insight 360 software, especially during peak load times. Please work with your network administrator or vendor for help. • It is recommended to have the instructor’s computer, iPad and student iPad applications running on the same VLAN. Since this is not always possible and student and instructor VLANs are created to keep them separated for security purposes, try to limit the amount of hops between the student and instructor installations as well as between the instructor iPad and the instructor’s computer running the Insight 360 application. Additionally, if the student and instructor installations are on different VLANs, it is important to ensure that the necessary ports are opened between VLANs. VLAN Navigation Many districts have chosen to use virtual local area networks (VLAN) to segregate network traffic in an effort to increase quality of service and security. Insight 360 can navigate these configurations with the use of port forwarding policies on firewalls and Ethernet switches. Below is a list of the ports and associated protocols in use with Insight 360. • If separate VLANs as well as Intrusion Detection Services (IDS) or Intrusion Protection Services (IPS) are in use between VLANs, there is a possibility that some latency could be added to a student or teacher’s experience. This is because the packets being sent between systems will be broken down by IDS/IPS and inspected for malicious intent. If you experience latency with IDS/IPS in between VLANs, you may want to consider making an exception for these applications. Please work with your IDS/IPS equipment vendor to determine how to do this. • Make sure that all network ports in use for Insight 360 are using optimal settings by checking that they are using full duplex and the largest bandwidth setting supported by your network. Ports on your networking equipment that are left to “auto negotiate” will sometime default to lesser settings when there are incompatibilities between networking equipment. This means that manual settings are needed to correct this behavior. Wireless Networking Considerations Since the student and teacher iPad applications rely heavily on your wireless infrastructure, the following factors play an important role in ensuring an optimal experience: • Ensure that your wireless access points are capable of handling the bandwidth requirements for your current • data traffic plus the added data traffic from your Insight 360 software, especially during peak load times. Port Protocol Function 31009 UDP Multicasting for connection facilitation 65007 TCP Data for teacher app 65008 TCP Data for student app 64250 HTTP API access for partner integrations
  • 18. Insight 360™ 18 einstruction.com/insight360 • Most wireless access point vendors will provide tools that provide a view into your wireless access point’s bandwidth utilization. Please refer to your wireless vendor’s documentation for help, and work with your network administrator or vendor. Please note that while your wired network may provide 1GB of bandwidth, most wireless access points can only provide a fraction of this bandwidth and could become overwhelmed even if your wired network is nowhere near saturation. • The bandwidth available to a wireless device is directly proportional to the wireless signal strength the device receives. Therefore, it is important to ensure that wireless access points are laid out in an optimal fashion to ensure that each device in use has the best signal possible. Quality of Service (QOS) QOS is the ability to provide different priorities to different applications, users, or network data flows, or to guarantee a certain level of performance to a data flow over your network. See page 11 for VLAN Navigation. If you experience latency with your Insight 360 application, it could be the result of network saturation during peak load times. Therefore, it may be necessary to implement QOS on your network to ensure that your Insight 360 application network traffic is prioritized and receives the necessary amount of bandwidth to provide an optimal experience. Please refer to your networking equipment documentation and/or your networking vendor for help implementing QOS on your network. Anti Virus While Anti-Virus software is necessary, it also has the propensity to slow computers down and could interfere with the performance of Insight 360, especially on older machines. Additionally, anti-virus has been known to interfere with the detection of HID devices and may include firewalls that block ports necessary for Insight 360. If you are experiencing performance issues or issues connecting your devices to a computer running Insight 360 you can rule out anti-virus as the cause by temporarily disabling the anti-virus software. If this resolves the issue then you should work with your anti- virus vendor to make the necessary changes to your anti-virus software to resolve these issues. Multicasting If you are using multiple VLANs in your network and would like to use Multicasting, you will need to contact your vendor to find out what is recommended as their best practice for enabling Multicasting on your networking equipment. The Multicast address is 239.255.107.13 and must be opened between VLANs. For information on how to test if your network supports multicasting, please visit: https://support.einstruction.com/entries/21208936-Testing-for-Network-Multicast-for-Mobi-360-for-iPad-Use Alternative to enabling multicast The Insight 360 Teacher App can work without using Multicast on your network. In this case, the students will need to manually type in the IP address of the desktop computer that has the Insight 360 software installed on it. The iPad will remember this address, but with most networks using dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP), it may require the user to re-type it occasionally to connect to the class if the IP address on the instructor’s computer ever changes.

  • 27. Insight 360™ 27 einstruction.com/insight360 VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS Many client applications of virtualized environments come in the form of a software client or a dedicated hardware thin client like a Cisco VXC 2211/12. The chart below illustrates the network setup and the thin clients that may be in the classroom. The goal is to configure your system so eInstruction products (Mobi 360, Pulse / Spark 360 receivers, etc.) can be plugged into the USB ports of the clients and have them successfully communicate to the virtualized desktop on the server. You will need to modify the configuration of your client device to pass-through the USB information from all the eInstruction devices that you are utilizing. For example, the Cisco VXC 2211/12 has a client GUI that allows the VID (Vendor ID) and PID (Product ID) of various USB devices to be entered as “bridged devices.” By entering the VID and PID numbers for all of the eInstruction devices in use, the Cisco thin client will allow all of the USB information from the device to pass-through to the server-based desktop image. In most cases this will allow a proper connection. The text of the Cisco description of the client feature is below along with a screen shot of where the VID/PIDs are entered. Again, your environment may be different, but the principles are the same. Below is a list of eInstruction product families and the individual VID and PID identifiers. There is usually no harm in entering all of the IDs. However, you may choose to enter only the product families that you currently use. There is some duplication between product families as some devices are used across several products. Some client systems want you to enter the full hex ID of the device (“0x34F”) and others only the part that follows the “x” (“34F”). For previous eInstruction devices please contact eInstruction Sales Support. Please enter each of the above devices if using CPS and/or Response. * Only need to enter one receiver based on your purchase.
