9. Message Of Thanks From Egyptian Community
“The Irish people helped us from the heart and we are full of love for the Irish people.”
As they prepared to attend Michael Hayes’ funeral, Saturday, February 11th, the families,
fellow crewmen and friends of the Egyptian seamen lost in the Tit Bonhomme tragedy in
Glandore Bay, expressed their deepest sympathy to the families of Kevin Kershaw and
Michael Hayes.
The whole Egyptian community and crews of West Cork fishing trawlers working out of
Union Hall expressed their sincere gratitude that, even though Kevin and Michael’s
bodies had been recovered, the search continued for the remaining Egyptian crewman
missing, Saied Aly Eldin, whose body was recovered on February 10th.
They thanked everyone involved in the search and all those who offered their support in
so many different ways, including gardaí from across the region, especially mentioning
Inspector Colin Collins, Liaison Officer, Garda Pauline Reid and Immigration Officer,
Garda Kathleen O’Brien.
They thanked all the owners and crews of local fishing boats and local boats who were
involved in the search from Sunday, January 15th through to February 10th.
They thanked the clergy, Fr Michael Curran PP, Fr Pierce Cormac, The Very Revd. Dean
Chris Peters and everyone who helped them and took part in their Muslim prayers.
They thanked the civil defence, coastguard, helicopter and RNLI crews, the crew of the
LE Niamh and the many volunteer divers who came from all parts of Ireland to assist in
the search.
They thanked Bill Deasy, Niall Deasy and their families, Bernie and Connie Nyhan of Pier
Holiday Homes who opened all their houses for the Egyptian families and other families
who needed to stay close to the pier during these 26 days. They thanked the many
people who donated, prepared and served food on the pier throughout their vigil.
They thanked Pierce Hickey, Newsagents, Skibbereen, and thanked all those who helped
with taking the bodies of the seamen who perished back to their homes in Egypt.
The teenage brother of Attia Shaban, whose body was the first recovered, was amongst
those who travelled from Egypt to attend the funeral of Michael Hayes.

16th, 17th & 18th March 2012.
Bantry, the Heart of West Cork.
It is time to get back to our roots; to leave behind the frustrations of mobile phones,
congested roads, endless queues and slow computers. This St. Patrick’s weekend
come and join us in Bantry for the opportunity to rediscover a time “fadó” when life was
much more simple.
This three day festival will take the visitor on a journey to a time before electrification in
Bantry, when we relied on lamps, candles and turf fires to light our evenings. Our
entertainment consisted of story telling, plays, music, singing and just a few topical
jokes. And our working day filled our lungs with fresh, organic air and rewarding
labours.
Bantry plays host to many festivals and events including the very popular Bay Run, the
now internationally famous Literary and Chamber Music Festivals to name a few. This
year will also see the return to Bantry of the Atlantic Challenge World Championships
when teams from 16 nations will compete for this coveted trophy.
Steeped in history, myths and legend, Bantry and West Cork are an ideal location for
hosting the Fadó Festival. Over the three days visitors will be entertained by a fantastic
Pageant of Fire Eaters and Drummers and have an opportunity to see the internationally
famous play,‘The Tailor and Ansty’ performed by Ronan Wilmot and Nuala Hayes.
Locals and visitors alike will experience what it was like to live in Bantry before
electrification as we leave all the lights off and bring out the lamps and candles. Other
entertainments will include a photographic exhibition, kids historical treasure hunt, céili
and much much more.
The festival will open with the traditional Friday Market where hawkers and street
traders will ply passers by with their home produced goods, locally grown vegetables
and exotic imports. Shoppers can browse the many items of antiquity on sale and be
entertained by buskers and street entertainers. For the family there will be a puppet
theatre throughout the afternoon and in the Parochial Hall a pictorial history of Bantry
and its many characters at work and at play.
As the evening draws on you, the visitor, will notice how dark a town can be with no
street lighting but will become very aware of candles and lamps appearing at windows
and doors. As your senses become more acute you will smell the delicious food from
our many restaurants and the welcoming turf fires of the bars. Inside the many bars, you
will find the best entertainment on offer for over 100 years with story telling, traditional
music and plenty of old time banter.

19. Petition To Stop ACTA
The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, or
ACTA, was signed by the European Union
and 22 of its member states recently. And it
could ruin the internet as we know it.
To Stop ACTA Today CLICK HERE!
Eight countries, including the United States,
signed this last fall. Called "SOPA light", it is
a global treaty that authorizes the policing
of the inter net and its users, and
ultimately, the censorship of it.
This would hurt the freedom of expression, civil and digital rights, fair use rights, and the
right to privacy.
Strict penalties, including prison sentences, would be enforced for violations of ACTA.
Please sign the petition and tell ACTA supporters to keep the internet free for
everyone!
Thanks for taking action!

source 1000 Oak and Ash saplings which
we would like to plant during tree week.
We are looking for community projects
that would be in a position to plant a
substantial number of trees. Please get in touch if you have such a project in mind. We
encourage all groups and communities to get involved in this National Tree Council
initiative by planting trees, organising walks in local woods and visiting champion trees.
We are in the process of organising some such events and will forward details shortly.
St. Patrick’s Festival, Saturday 17th March: CEF has participated in the Festival
Parade for a number of years. This is always a fun way of highlighting the importance of
environmental issues and CEF. This year’s theme is based on the Olympics, we already
have some ideas of how we can adapt this in creating our float. As always the more
people who participate the more successful the spectacle! Please get in touch if you
are interested in getting involved or helping out.
CEF will be participating in the Lifelong Learning Festival, 26th March – 1st April.
More information on this will be available soon.
