The game of volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan and was
originally called “mintonette” (referencing its similarity to badminton). The
volleyball game was invented 4 years after basketball, and it was designed
as a combination of basketball, baseball, tennis and handball.

“My coach tells me to give about 75% for volleyball. If I give 100%,
my service will kill someone, and my coach doesn't want to deal
with the paperwork”.
#3
The idea of volleyball was born when Morgan reacheo the conclusion that
basketball was an extremely physically demanding sport, running the court
up and down, not so easy to be practised by people that weren’t in enough
good shape, and so he decided to create a new game, also indoors,
following some of the goals of basketball, but for people who weren’t in as
good shape. And this is why volleyball was created.

Volleyball was originally demonstrated in the 1924 Olympics in Paris, but
not played as an official sport. It was finally added as an official sport in
1964, in Tokyo.
After a demonstration, it was Dr Alfred T. Halstead who suggested to
Morgan that a better name for the sport than Mintonette would be “Volley
Ball”, as the game primarily consisted of volleying a ball back and forth.
Morgan liked the new name and re-named the sport as such.
In 1916, in the Philippines, an offensive style of passing the ball in a high
trajectory to be struck by another player (the set and spike) were
introduced and quickly became popular throughout the world. The rule only
allowing three hits per side before a ball must be returned wasn’t
established until 1920.
The Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) was founded in April 1947, in France.
The headquarters were established in Paris, where they remained for the first 37 years.
Mr. Libaud, President of the French Federation, was elected first President of the FIVB.

In 1949 the U.S. Volleyball Association sponsored the first National Women Open
championships. The first World Championships were organised in 1949 for Men and 1952 for
Women. The first televised volleyball matches were at the 1974 World Championships in
Mexico, although they were televised only in Japan.
In 1981 the NCAA - National Collegiate Athletic Association (a non-profit organization in
North America) recognizes the growth of women's volleyball and held its first national
championship for women.

BEACHVOLLEYBALL

#11
Beach volleyball is an outdoor sand-based court sport played between two teams
of two. The aim of the game is to hit an inflated ball over a net that hangs high at
the centre of the court and make it land in the opposition's half.
#13
#14
The sport began to appear in Europe in 1930. Competitions became common over
the following decades and the sport’s popularity increased during the 80s.
Most likely originated in 1915 on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii, the first Beach volleyball
matches were played with teams of at least 6 players per side, much like indoor
volleyball. The concept of the modern two-man beach volleyball game is credited
to Paul 'Pablo' Johnson of the Santa Monica, California, Athletic Club.
Beach volleyball grew in popularity in the United States during the Great
Depression in the 1930s as it was an inexpensive activity.
#15
The first professional beach volleyball tournament was the "Olympia World Championship
of Beach Volleyball" in 1976, at Will Rogers State Beach in Pacific Palisades, California.
The first "world champions" were Greg Lee and Jim Menges.
#16
Beach volleyball has become a global sport, with international competition
organized by the FIVB. USA and Brazil are the two most successful nations in
Olympic beach volleyball.
There are many health benefits you can gain from playing volleyball. The exercise aspect from it alone
is great for your body weight, your muscle tone and will help work your heart to make it stronger.
Beach Volleyball made its first appearance at the Olympics in 1992, as
demonstration, and it was included as an official Olympic sport 4 years later.

FOOTVOLLEY
Another interesting variation on volleyball
is Footvolley, which is played such that you
are only allowed to use your legs or feet to
handle the ball, which is a football one.
Footvolley was created by Octavio de
Moraes in 1965 in Brazil.
#20
Footvolley started in Rio de Janeiro
because football was banned on the
beach, but volleyball courts were
open. The first game of footvolley was
played in Copacabana beach in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil.
#21
Teams of footvolley had 5 a side initially.
Due to the skill level of the then footvolley
athletes (nearly all were professional
football players); the ball would rarely drop.
Thus, the players began lowering the
number of players on each side, eventually
settling on 2 vs. 2, which is still in use today.
#22
The first event of importance outside
Brazil happened in 2003 at Miami
Beach. The US Footvolley Association
demonstrated the sport at that year’s
Fitness Festival where it turned heads.
#23
10
First official Footvolley tournament was organized in the
1990s on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
#24
In the 80s footvolley arrived in Europe via
Portugal. A Portuguese immigrant, Mr.
Julião Neto, returned from Brazil and
introduced the sport to the local youth. In
the next years, several football players
started competing and footvolley was
spread all over Europe.
#26
#25
#27Paraguay was the first world champion of
footvolley. The Paraguayan Jesús is
considered the best player in the World
Championship.
There was a famous Pepsi advertising campaign in
2009 that had the participation of football players
Lampard, Kaka, Henri, Torres and Messi.
In 2011, UAE hosted the Footvolley World Cup
with the participation of 27 countries. The event
was the first official cup belonging to the
International Federation of Volleyball.
#28
Every year, several major events are held at beautiful beaches across
the globe. For example, USA Footvolley organizes competitions and
other events to promote the sport in its home base of Florida as well
as other parts of the country such as Virginia and California.

HOOVER-BALL
#29
#30
#31 Hoover-ball is basically a combination of tennis, volleyball
and medicine ball (a weighted ball roughly the diameter of the
shoulders, often used for rehabilitation and strength training).
Another variation on volleyball, which is significantly more
physically demanding, is Hooverball, invented in 1929 by
White House's physician Admiral. Joel T. Boone, to keep
president Herbert Hoover physically fit.
If you are stressed out, volleyball is a great game for you.
With the combination of the quick reactive movements, hands-
on hard-hitting of the ball and the constan sprints around the
court, you are able to burn a lot of energy and stress.
12
#32
Hoover-ball was played by teams of 2-4 players with a six-pound medicine ball
over a net 8 feet high on a court similar to the one used for tennis. The server
throws the ball. The opponent must catch it on the fly and immediately return it,
attempting to put it where it cannot be reached and returned. The side that
misses the ball or throws it out of bounds loses the point.
#33
In Hooverball, women are governed by a different regulation, since it takes into account
the possibility that there may be more difficulty for some of them due to the weight of
the ball. For example, women take off from the midfield line and can return the ball to
any area of the opponent's court. And unlike the men who must return the ball at the
first touch, women can pass the ball to a partner before throwing it to the opposite field.
#34
The average age of the participants was 53. Players would dress in flannel
shirts, old trousers, sweaters or leather jackets, rubber-soled shoes, and often
hats.
#35 The popularity of Hoover-ball lasted only as long as the presidency of
Hoover. Even so, the USA still holds Hoover-Ball national championships,
in cooperation with the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association.
#36
Proper technique requires the use of the whole body when
throwing the medicine ball, not just the arms. One is called the
body twist: the player holds the ball with both hands a little below
the waist. Next, the player bends their knees slightly. To make
the throw, the player twists a little more and at the same time
pushes with their legs and throws with their arms. This can be a
quick, off the hip throw.
13
HOOVER-BALL
#37
The longest marathon playing volleyball (indoors)
lasted 85 h and was achieved by members of SVU
Volleyball (Netherlands) at the Sports Centre
Uilenstede in Amstelveen, the Netherlands on 27
to 30 December 2011.
The rules of Hooverball have
not been modified at all since
its invention, that is, today the
original regulations are used.
Trebuchet is another technique in hoover-ball: The player
holds the ball in one hand and fully extends their elbow
off to the side of their body. To make the throw the player
"cocks" their arm back while keeping the elbow straight,
then takes a step forward, twists and releases the ball.
If there are more than 4 players in
each team, there must be 2 medicinal
balls in play at all times, which
complicates the game but also makes
it more dynamic.

SEPAKTAKRAW
#41
Sepak Takraw is another
sport similar to volleyball. It’s
a sport played all throughout
Southeast Asia and it is also
known as kick volleyball.
Sepak takraw uses a rattan
ball, and the players only use
their feet, knee, chest, and
head to touch the ball. #42
This sport dates back to the 15th
Century and it was believed to have
been developed by the Malacca
Sultanate. The modern version of
sepak takraw is fiercely competitive
and began taking shape in Thailand
almost 200 years ago. In 1829, the
Siam Sports Association drafted the
first rules for the game.
#43The average volleyball
players jump about
300 times during a
match. This is easy to
do when you add in the
jumping for blocking
and spiking.
15
#44 #45
#46
Sepak takraw may be played indoors or outdoors
like at the beach. The taking serves the ball. Once
the ball is served, the players are allowed to move
freely. Using the hands is not permitted, and each
player can touch the ball only once before it is hit
over the net. The ball can be returned over the net
using any part of the body except for the arm from
the shoulder to the point of the finger.
Before it was officially called sepak takraw in 1960,
the sport was known by different names in different
countries: in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, it's
called "sepak raga" whereas in Thailand it's
commonly known as "takraw". The same game
goes by the name of 'sipa' in the Philippines, 'da
cau' in Vietnam, 'rago' in Indonesia, and 'kator' in
Laos.
The governing body for sepak takraw is the ISTAF
International Sepak Takraw Federation, formed in
1988.

The ISTAF currently has 31 national
associations under its membership, 23
from Asia, 3 from North America, 2
from South America and 3 from
Europe.
One of the goals of the Federation is to
make it an Olympic sport, and for that
will need to spread Sepaktakraw into 75
different countries around the globe, as
this is one of the requirements of the
International Olympic Council.
Volleyball is the second most popular sport,
second only to soccer. This is due to the fact
that volleyball is open to be played from
middle school, high school, college up to the
professional and Olympic levels.
In 1990, sepak takraw was included at the Asian Games in
Beijing. Women also got in on the action with the first
women's championships in Thailand hosted in 1997. Sepak
takraw was also introduced as a demonstration sport at the
2009 World Games in Chinese Taipei.

Jokgu is very popular in Korea, with over 1.000 teams in
professional, school snd military leagues. It is also one of
the most common ways to pass time in the military.
A jokgu match is played between 2 teams with
4 players on each team. The ball used has a
20 cm diameter, which is slightly smaller than
the ball used for volleyball.
Jokgu is a Korean sport which resembles a mix of
football and volleyball, was developed by the Republic
of Korea Air Force in 1960 as a way to promote
exercise on military bases. Sometimes expresses the
style of various martial arts movements.
It can be played indoors or outdoors. The rules are similar to volleyball,
but only your feet, shin and head may have contact with the ball. Each
team is allowed a maximum of three touches and the ball has to be
returned to the opposing team on the 3rd touch.
Jokgu was one of the sports that were premiered at the 1st Annual
Leisure Games in Chuncheon, Korea in 2010. Plus, countries with
large populations of Koreans such as the US and Canada have
Jokgu leagues so the National Team gets plenty of chances to play.
There is a movie from 2013 called King of Jokgu. If you want to
learn a little more about it, you can watch the show “Cool Kidz on
Block” where Jokgu is one of the games they learn and then they
challenge teams to see how well they’ve learned the game.
Every week in the US
approximately 46 million
people play volleyball.
Worldwide this number is
800 million players a week.

You cannot find many websites about
leagues and teams in other parts of the

JOKGU
20
There are not particular positions while
playing a game of Jokgu, unless a
special strategy is planned.
When professional players play Jokgu,
they plan their positions in different
areas in the court. There are 4 main
places where player stays, Left
Defender, Right Defender, Setter and
Spiker.
#61
The word jokgu is derived from the
Chinese characters for foot (“jok”) and ball
(“gu”), and considering how many
versions of “football” are already vying for
global dominance, it may be easier to
remember in Korean.

Water Volleyball has become more popular
among seniors as it eases the pressure on
the junctions. Worth to mention is that it
promotes the active aging.
WATERVOLLEY
Water volleyball is
played by 2 teams, consisting usually of 1
to 4 players. The winner is the first team
to score 11 points. However, if the score
gets to 10 apiece, then the team to score
either 2 points ahead of the other team,
or else first to 15 points, wins the game.
There are usually 5 sets in a match.
The serve is not allowed to be a spike and the receiver cannot
spike of the serve either. One team serves for 2 points then the
other team serves, and play continues in this fashion. When it is
10 apiece, you start serving 1 serve each. A flip of a coin at the
start of the game is used to see who serves first, or else the
person in the deep end serves first.
The variation of beach volleyball has
ended up with Aqua or Water Volleyball.
Its floating court has the dimension of a
rectangular of min. 3 m to a max. 6 m in
length. The net must run across the width
and be centred along the length. The first
official tournament was held in 1985 in
the US.

There are variations of volleyball that allows disable persons to play too. Standing
volleyball has its roots in Great Britain and was originally played by amputees. It was
played by disabled sportsmen long before the international sports federations for the
disabled were founded.
Some standing volleyball characteristics and facts: team sport played by 2 teams, on
each side of the court are 6 players; the ball is played by hitting it with any part of the
body; players can use prostheses.

The first official international tournament for sitting volleyball under the umbrella of the ISOD
(International Sports Organization for the Disabled) took place in 1979 in Haarlem, the
Netherlands. Sitting volleyball was accepted as a Paralympic sport in 1980 at Arnhem
Paralympic Games. Today sitting volleyball is a popular worldwide game, played in Africa, both
Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe, with its own playing concept and identity.
In 1956 a new event, designed by two Dutchmen, T. van der Scheer and A.
Albers, was introduced in the Netherlands. They called the game sitting
volleyball. This is a sport in which the disabled and able-bodied can play
together at a high technical level and, as such, represents a good opportunity
for co-operation and integration.
Some sitting volleyball characteristics and facts: sitting volleyball is a team
sport played by two teams, on each side of the court are 6 players; the ball is
played by hitting it with any part of the body; blocking the service is allowed by
rules; players are required to be in a sitting position during the game.

amputees are by far most represented in volleyball
for the disabled; cerebral palsy; poliomyelitis. The
degree of paralysis varies from one person to
another. Some may be on wheelchairs, others may
be affected in only one limb and other athletes with
a different range of conditions.
#74 Standing volleyball for the disabled was accepted as an
official event at the Paralympic games for the first time in
Toronto (Canada) in 1976. Today standing volleyball is no
longer a Paralympic sport.

Front row players are players who are
allowed to block the opponent and attack
the ball in the attack zone. Back row ones
are players who play defence by digging
opponent’s attacks and attack the ball
behind attack line (3 m line).
Volleyball court divides into attack zone
(front row) and defence zone (back row).
There are 3 players on each of the zone.
Volleyball zones on the court can also be
called positions.
Players are rotating clockwise on the court after winning the rally
after the opponent’s serve.
Players have rotational positions (position 5, position 2 etc.) on
the court from which they are allowed to move to their playing
positions (opposite, middle hitter, etc.) after the serve when
appropriate.
28
#88
There are 7 known playing positions in volleyball:
Outside hitter (wing spiker, left side)
Right side hitter (wing spiker, right side)
Opposite Hitter (attacker)
Setter Middle Blocker (centre, middle hitter)
Libero
Defensive Specialist (mostly used in the US)
Outside Hitter is the player who carries the serve
receives responsibility along with the libero. Outside
hitter’s passing responsibility makes them extremely
important player for the team.
The most consecutive volleyball passes is 110 in an
event hosted by the Triangle Volleyball Club at the
Raleigh Convention Center in Raleigh, North
Carolina, USA, on 5 February 2010.
Outside hitter most often attacks the balls which
setter sets to the antenna to the left side of the court.
Therefore after the serve outside hitters place
themselves to the left front position. Sometimes
setters run offensive plays in which outside hitters
run to hit balls “inside” around the middle blockers.

Outside hitters play both the front row and the back row. In modern high level volleyball
outside hitters are responsible for hitting the 3 meter line attacks, usually from the middle
back position when playing in the back row.
Playing on the outside hitter’s position requires great all around skills because they
play through the front row and the back row.
Right side hitter has the similar role than outside hitter, they
play front row and back row and are carrying pass, attack,
block, serve and defense responsibilities. Right side hitters
aim to place themselves to the right front playing position.
Right side hitter can be also called a wing spiker. Wing
spikers along with the opposites are often players who score
the most points in the game.
The record for the most people controlling volleyballs is 299
and was achieved by the people of Taiwan, at YungShin
Sports Park, in Taichung County, Taiwan, on 2 October 2008.
The participants controlled the ball for at least 10 seconds.

Often counter attack sets after the defensive play
goes to the opposite hitters - they carry the
responsibility of hitting the ball against a solid block
when the pass is off the net.
Opposites need to have great blocking
skills since they play against the opposite
hitter of the opponent or opponent's
outside hitter when in the front row. Also,
they need to have defensive skills
because they also play the back row
where they are responsible of hitting 3
meter balls from the right back position.
Opposite hitters don’t have the passing responsibilities.
They stand behind the passers on the rotation while libero
and outside hitters pass the ball and place themselves to
the left front, right front or right back playing position. The
opposite usually get the most sets in the game.

In professional volleyball opposites along with
setters have traditionally been the highest paid
individuals - those are volleyball positions in most
demand.
#102
The setter is the playmaker, point guard or the
quarterback of the volleyball team. A setter’s
responsibility is to run the team’s offense and build
up offensive scoring opportunities for the team.
#101
The setter plays both front row and back row,
therefore they needs to be able to block, serve and
play defence. The setter needs to have good
blocking skills because in front row position they
play against the opponent’s outside hitter who often
carries big load of the attacking responsibility for the
team.

Middle Blockers in the back row: in competitive volleyball
middle blockers usually play defence only on one rotation -
after an own serve. After losing the rally after an own serving
turn, a libero usually comes in and replaces the middle
blocker.
#106
Middle blockers main responsibility is to stop the opponent’s
offense, builds a block which stops the ball, or allows the
team to dig the ball up. Middle blockers job is to stop the
opponent’s middle hitters or wing hitters in co- operation with
teammates. They also need to have great attacking and
serving skills.
The middle blocker usually doesn’t master in defence
because they hardly play any of it. However, at junior level
practicing defence and even passing is highly recommended
for the middles. Junior coaches should allow players to
practice all the skills equally to ensure their overall skill
development. This improves their athleticism and prepares
players to play other positions, they may not be tall enough
to play middle in the future.
COURTPOSITIONS
Since playing in the back court only, the libero
needs to have the best passing and defensive
skills in the team. The libero need to have
exceptional serve receive skills because often
they pass a larger area than other serve
receivers in the team.
#108 The libero can replace any player on the court and
most often replaces middle blockers. The libero is
not allowed to serve the ball (Some leagues in US
allow liberos to serve).
#107
The libero is fairly new position in volleyball and is a
back row specialist who is allowed to play back court
only. The libero wears a different colour shirt in the team
and is allowed to enter and exit the game without
substitution request.

Defensive specialists carry a serve receive and defense responsibility in the back row.
Defensive specialists are allowed to serve and often play the full back row rotation before
giving the spot in the front row to the offensive player again.
Aged 44 years, Karch Kiraly (the USA, 3 November 1960) became the
oldest player to win an AVP tour title, the Huntington Beach Open, in
Huntington Beach, California, USA on 13 August 2005.
Most leagues in United States allow unlimited substitutions
therefore very often in the team there are defensive specialists.
Defensive specialists in US enter the game to replace players who in
international volleyball would be playing both the front and the back row.

What should you be looking at
when buying volleyball shoes?
The support and cushioning - this is

forefoot and rear footpads are
important as volleyball players often
have to spend a long day on their
feet when participating in all-day

Having a shoe that offers you the comfort you need, will enable you
to perform at your peak at all times. The midsole of the volleyball
shoe is designed to absorb the shock of impact from jumping, quick
stops and fast changes of direction. It also needs to be strong yet
flexible to give you the best performance
The stability is one of the most important aspects of a volleyball
shoe. Volleyball players need to move quickly around the court in
multiple directions. Quick changes of direction are also common.
Moving forward, backward and left to right or vice versa quickly is
imperative, you go where the ball goes.

#118
Having a shoe that offers the stability to cope with this
type of movement is vital to prevent injuries such as
rolling your ankle. It should also provide the kind of
stability you need to prevent ankle injuries, and lessen the
chances of you sustaining one during a game. Although
most athletic shoes will provide you with the stability to
move forward they may not provide the multidirectional
movement necessary in a volleyball game.
#119
The traction on the volleyball shoe is also vital.
It needs to have a superb grip as you will be
moving fast, stopping and changing direction
quickly, your shoe needs to keep you stable on
the ground without allowing you to slip, fall and
injure yourself. The grip your volleyball shoe
offers is one of the most important aspects of
your shoe.

EQUIPMENT
A valve permits the internal
air pressure to be adjusted.
In a break from the traditional
construction, in 2008, the
FIVB adopted as its official
indoor ball a new Mikasa with
dimples and only 8 panels for
a softer touch and truer flight.

Volleyball is a fast and furious game
that demands a lot from your feet
This means that your feet will get
hot and sweaty. A shoe that allows
for adequate airflow to keep your
feet cool and dry is essential. The
cooler your feet is the more
comfortable you will feel and you will
perform a lot better on the courts.
Nonetheless, besides the shoes, you
need a ball that is particular for this
sport. Volleyballs are round and
traditionally consist of 18 nearly
rectangular panels of synthetic or
genuine leather, arranged in 6
identical sections of 3 panels each,
wrapped around a bladder.

Beach volleyballs are slightly larger than standard indoor balls, have a rougher external
texture, and lower internal pressure. They can be brightly coloured or solid white. The
very first volleyballs were made from leather panelling over a rubber carcass.
The equipment sure helps, but is not your only “ally” you should take into consideration.
Let’s see some facts about the diet. While nutrition on the court on match day is
important, a healthy eating pattern off the court will provide an essential base for a fit, fast
and lean volleyball player.
Before the rally scoring was implemented points could only be earned
by the team who was currently serving. If a serve was missed or the
other team won the ball, then no point was given.
At 17 years, Xue Chen (China, b.18 February 1989) became the
youngest player to win an international beach volleyball title, the
China Shanghai Jinshan Open, in Shanghai, China, on 28 May 2006.
TRAININGDIET
#127
A daily intake for a player should be based around
nutrient-rich carbohydrates, (grainy breads, brown rice,
quinoa, whole meal pasta); lean protein sources, (lean
red meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, dairy and lentils) and
healthy fat sources, (avocado, olive oil, nuts and fish);
as well as fruit and plenty vegetables.
Individual intake will be determined by the frequency of
training, size of athlete, individual requirements and
adjustment for growth in younger athletes and should
be discussed with an Accredited Sports Dietitian to
ensure an athlete’s goals are met.
Immediately before training or competition having a
small amount of fluid (200-300 ml) not only helps
with hydration, but also prepares the gut for
accepting fluids throughout the game.
The need to remain well hydrated, drinking regularly
throughout the day, especially with meals or snacks
is important. Players should aim for regular amounts
of pale yellow urine over the day as a useful
indicator of good hydration status.

#131
Since adequate hydration is essential for performance particularly skill and
decision-making, it is an important consideration for volleyball players. Volleyball is
usually played indoors in a controlled environment although, players should be
aware that they can still lose significant amounts of body fluids when playing at
these venues due to the physical demands and intensity of a match.
Athletes should maintain good hydration through the regular fluid intake, and
replace fluid deficit accrued during training or a match. Water is a good option,
although a sports or electrolyte drink may be beneficial if playing for longer than 1 h.
The record for the largest beach volleyball tournament is for the senior male division
of the Usedom BeachCup 2007 with 236 players in the division, played in
Karlshagen, Insel Usedom, Germany, from 27 to 29 July 2007. The entire event
consisted of 890 participants across six different divisions. The tournament was
formed by 334 teams.

TRAININGDIET
A meal or snack should be consumed in the 2-4 hours prior to the start
of a match.
Staying hydrated is vitally important
during longer games and in hot
weather to maintain performance.
Environmental conditions and
individual sweat posses are the
main determinants of fluid needs.
#134
#135
#136
Food and fluid choices should be familiar to the individual to avoid unexpected problems (e.g.
stomach upset). A simple way to avoid any problems is to ensure that all food consumed in the hours
leading into important matches has been trialled in similar conditions or matches.
#137
For an individual with a healthy base diet as described above, carbohydrate loading should not be
essential due to the low level of aerobic activity coupled with the downtime off-court available to eat
and drink within a match or between matches in a tournament setting.

VOLLEYACCIDENTS
Ankle: sprains are the most frequent type. And
while the most are not severe those are can
result in fractures and ligament /tendon injuries
that may require surgery.
Knee: jumper’s knee (patellar tendonitis) is when
the tendons around the kneecap (patella)
become irritated by small micro-tears, resulting
in knee pain and stiffness.
Shoulder: the high-stress motions of spiking
and serving are done by competitive players
can result in injuries to the tendons and
ligaments that support the shoulder.
Fingers: players can suffer jammed, dislocated
and fractured fingers from contact with the ball,
the net and even their teammates. Long-term
issues can include pain and deformity.
Lower back: lower back pain is fairly
common among volleyball players as a
result of muscle or ligament strain.

The tallest volleyball players are
Dmitrij Muserski (RUS) with 218 cm,
and Jekatierina Gamowa (RUS) with
202 cm. At the opposite pole, the
shortest players are Oh Jung-Rok
(KOR) with 170 cm, and Yūko Sano I
Yoshie Takeshita (JAP) with 159 cm.
#157
INJURIES
#155
Rotator Cuff Tendinitis - During serving and spiking, the rotator
cuff muscles are important in generating the necessary power to
move the shoulder. While rarely completely torn in young
players, these muscles can get irritated or fatigued with
overuse. Often, rest and physical therapy services may be
enough to resolve pain. If pain persists, talk to your physician.
47
#156
Finger Injuries - Fingers are vulnerable to injury during volleyball activities,
such as blocking, setting, and digging. Common finger injuries include
fractures, dislocations, and tendon and ligament tears. If youare unable to
bend the finger, consultation with your sports medicineprofessional or athletic
trainer is important. Treatment can vary significantlydepending on the injury.
Ankle Sprains - Ankle injuries are the most
common injury to volleyball players and
responsible for the most lost playing time.
Ankle sprains should be immobilized for as
short as time as possible to allow for quicker
rehabilitation.
Every ankle sprain needs an 8-week course
of daily rehabilitation exercise to decrease
the risk of re-injury. Usually, injuries can be
treated non-operatively with bracing and
physical therapy or home rehabilitation
exercises.
#158
#159
#160
Occasionally, though, ankle sprains can be associated with
subtle fractures or cartilage injuries. Continued pain after
several weeks should prompt further evaluation, including
X rays and/or MRIs. Return to play is usually allowed once
players have no pain and are able to support their body
weight while standing on the toes. Surgery is reserved for
those with recurrent ankle sprains that have not responded
to conservative measures or those with specific associated
fractures.
#161
Dennis Hare and Jill Esteras wrote the first book on the
subject of beach volleyball: “The Art of Beach Volleyball”,
published in 1981.
48
INJURIES
Patellar tendonitis - it is inflammation of the tendon that connects the kneecap to the
tibia (or shin bone). Patellar tendinitis is common in any athlete subjected to
repetitive, forceful jumping activities, such as spiking and blocking. Patellar tendon
straps are helpful in unloading the stress to the patellar tendon and are often the first
line of treatment. Physical therapy and athletic training services
focused on stretching and strengthening are also helpful.
Usually ACL tears are associated with a “pop” and immediate knee swelling.
Examination by a physician and MRI are often used to confirm the ACL injury.
Because ACL tears do not heal, those wishing to return to sports activities are
encouraged to have the ACL reconstructed. Recovery time is usually at least six to
nine months. There are training techniques that may decrease the risk of ACL injury
in jumping athletes, especially females.
#163
#164
49
#162
Specific attention to landing from jumping (eccentric contraction of the
quadriceps muscles) in rehabilitation is often beneficial. Occasionally, patellar
tendinitis persists despite therapy and surgery is required.

#169
INJURIES
#165
Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injury – like ankle sprains, most ACL injuries in
volleyball players occur when a player lands awkwardly after jumping.
The low back is a common source of chronic pain among volleyball players. The
cause of most low-back pain is related to muscle or ligament strain. The pain usually
resolves with rest, physical therapy and athletic training services.
#167
If low-back pain is accompanied by pain that radiates down the legs
and numbness or weakness in the foot or ankle, the culprit may be a
herniated disk. In cases of radiating pain, an MRI may be helpful in
evaluating the presence of a disc herniation. In most cases, volleyball
players can return to play once the pain, numbness, and weakness
resolve.
Volleyball Fundamentals is a book with instructions on how to play volleyball for
students. The book was written by Joel Dearing and published in 2003.
Volleyball players may also be at increased risk for a sort of stress fracture
in the low back called spondylolysis. If pain persists more than a month and
is worse with bending backwards, consider consulting a physician.
50
51
#170
Many volleyball injuries can be
prevented by following proper
training guidelines and these tips:
Use proper strength training techniques for
the lower back, shoulders, and legs.
Use external ankle support, such as an ankle
brace or taping, to prevent the ankle from
rolling over, especially if you have had a prior
sprain.
Minimize the amount of jump training on hard
surfaces.
Warm-up muscles with stretching and light
aerobic exercises.
Be sure to properly cool down after practice
If you are having pain, visit your doctor and
follow instructions for treatment.
The athlete should return to play only when
clearance is granted by a health care
professional.

Jump rope is an easy way to get a
full-bod workout - it strengthens
the lower and upper-body muscles
- and it's a great cardiovascular
exercise.
One minute: two feet
One minute: single leg (30 sec per
leg)
One minute: crossover
One minute: speed
Repeat this series three times.
Lower Body Exercises – lunges.
Lunges strengthen the glutes, hips, hamstrings, and quads.
They also require the activation of calf, abdominal, and back
muscles in order to stabilize the body during the exercise.
#183
To do a lunge, stand up straight and extend your
left leg out in front of you, lowering down into a split stance. Bend
your back knee until it almost touches the ground. Your front leg
should be bent at a 90-degree angle, with your knee right above your
ankle. Push yourself back up and out of the pose using your front leg.
Switch legs and repeat.
Lunge - Perform four sets of 20 repetitions (10 per leg)

your hands in front of your chest. Keeping
your chest up, bend at the knees and lower
toward the floor, stopping when you've
reached the extent of your range of motion.
Without letting your knees collapse in, push
through your heels and extend your hips to
stand up.
Body squat - Perform four sets of 10 reps.
#187
Romanian deadlifts strengthen the glutes and
hamstrings and increase flexibility and mobility in the
hips, hamstrings, and lower back. To perform an RDL,
hold a pair of dumbbells or a barbell, hinge at the hips
with your knees slightly bent, pushing the hips back,
while keeping your abs in and chest proud. At the bottom
of this move, you should feel your hamstring activate.
Use the hamstrings and glutes to extend the hips and
return to standing.
Romanian deadlift (RDL) - Perform 4 sets of eight per
leg
56

Squats require the use of the knees and hips. They target your back, glutes, hamstrings, and quads. There
are many variations of squats. One of the simpler ones is to do a basic body weight squat.
Wall sits strengthen your quads, hamstrings, and adductors. To do a wall sit,
find a flat wall and press your back flat against it, then bend your knees until
they reach a 90-degree angle, with your ankles directly under your knees.
Wall sit - Perform 3 sets of 45 seconds.

Tricep dips work the muscles on the back of your upper
arms, as well as the pectoralis minor. To do a tricep
dip, stand with your back to a low, flat surface such as
a table or a chair. Keeping your body off of the object,
place your hands on either side of your body with
fingers pointin forward. With your back flat and knees
bent at 90 degrees, bend your arms and lower your
body toward the ground, then push yourself back up,
keeping your elbows tucked tight to your sides.
Tricep dip - Perform 3 sets of eight repetitions.
Let’s see now some exercises for the upper body
Push-ups are a compound exercise, meaning that they
work multiple muscle groups at once. Push-ups
strengthen your arms, core, chest, legs, and hips. To
do a push-up, start in a plank position, then bend your
elbows, lower your body to the ground, and push
yourself back up. Engage your core to keep your body
in a straight line as your lower down and push up.
Push-up - Perform three sets of 10 repetitions.

Bicep curls strengthen your deltoids,
wrists, flexors, and biceps. To do a
bicep curl, hold a dumbbell or
kettlebell. Keeping the elbow tucked
tight to your side, and raise the
weight up to your shoulder. Slowly
lower. You can do the same exercise
with a band tied to a stable object.
Bicep curl - Perform 3 sets of 10
repetitions per arm.
Burpees work your arms, chest, quads, glutes, hamstrings, and core. Begin standing up,
then bend over until your hands touch the floor, and jump your feet back into a plank
position. Hold the plank for a count, or do a push-up, and then jump your feet back to your
hands and stand up. To make this harder, you can add a vertical jump after standing up.
Burpee - Perform 3 sets of 6 repetitions.

The book has many illustrations and one of the purposes is to help
improve the fundamental volleyball skills. Volleyball Drills features 97
basic drills & 19 basic games designed to help players improve their
serving, passing, setting, attacking, blocking, and defending skills.
Leg raises strengthen
your interior hip flexors

It is important throughout your training to continue to work on your
game. Certain aspects of your game will change as you get stronger
in the gym. You will find your upper body getting stronger and you are
able to hit the volleyball faster and harder.
60
You will also notice that you
are jumping higher than you
previously could due to
increasing your power in the
gym. One thing that shouldn't
change (unless you get
sloppy) is your biomechanics.
You will have the same form
on your bump/set/spike/serve
as you did previously.

How to improve blocking skills - As you
go up in level, you need to pay
attention to where the hitters are and
identify them before the play. If you
know where their approach is coming
from, you can adjust your starting
position and put yourself in a position
to be disruptive to them. Once the ball
leaves the setter's hands, the eyes
really need to be able to come off the
ball and find the hitter and then have
both the hitter and ball in their focus at
the attack. Too often players follow the
ball and miss all the clues of the
hitter's approach.”

A back row attack in volleyball
occurs when one of the three
back row players attacks the
ball and contacts it at the top of
the net. In a back row attack,
the back row player jumps from
behind the white line, also
known as the ten-foot line, or
the 3-meter line and contacts
the ball.
What Position Should You
Play in Volleyball?
In volleyball, the position
you play should be based
on the type of player you
are, your size and agility,
and the skills at which you
excel.
The outside hitter is a position that
requires a good all-around player. The
team relies on the outside hitter for a
significant amount of serve reception. It is
not only responsible for blocking the other
team’s opposite but needs to help the
middle blocker with some of the quick
attacks and setter dumps. The outside
hitter's best skills are: Hitting (front and
back row), passing and blocking.
64
65
The middle blocker is mostly responsible for keeping the opponent’s hitters in check. A good middle is great at
reading the setter to determine where she will set the ball and is quick enough to get there and put up a solid
block. The middle blocker's best skills are: blocking, hitting, reading the setter and lateral movement.
The volleyball setter is often referred to as the quarterback of the sport. The setter has to be a smart tactician
and needs to know the team better than anybody to determine who the set should go to and when. Good
setters can deliver the ball where it needs to be when setting underhand or overhand. Setters also need to be
good diggers, great communicators, and team leaders. The setter's best skills are: all-around ball control,
setting (overhand and underhand), digging, communication and team leadership.
The opposite is responsible for blocking the other team’s best outside hitter, so they need to be able to set the
block well for the middle and take away a good portion of the court with good blocking position. The
opposite's best skills are: hitting (front and back row) and blocking.

The libero only plays in the back row and
cannot attack the ball, so these players are
usually smaller than front row players and have
impeccable ball control skills. Liberos are often
asked to take the majority of the court in serve
receive because they are the best passers and
because they don’t need to worry about getting
into position to hit. The libero's best skills are:
Ball control, passing, digging and setting.
In volleyball, a down ball occurs when an attacker hits the
ball overhand while standing on the ground, usually off the
net.
A back row attack in volleyball occurs when one of the
three back row players attacks the ball and contacts it at
the top of the net. In a back row attack, the back row player
jumps from behind the white line, also known as the three-
meter line and contacts the ball.

Meanwhile, it would be better to mention about Romanian national

Similarly, there are other teams as well such as Men’s Military Team

Volleyball Federation (FRV) which consists of several members in the headquarters

Volleyball started being practiced in Romania in 1920, being
practiced by university students. The game evolves on all
planes, the club teams and the national teams, both male and
female, starting to have good results at the international
competitions especially in the period of 1946-1980.
In order to improve the contribution to the volleyball in Romania
the lots of players have often transferred payers from other
European and Non-European. There is no regulation regarding
the number of foreign players that are allowed to play in a
Romanian club.

The participation of the Romanian national teams
in Olympic Games starts in 1964 with the first
volleyball Olympics, where they finish on the 4th
position. The evolution since then brings the
following results: 1972 – males, 5th place; 1980 –
males, bronze medallists; females, 8th place.
The competitions organised after the appearance of volleyball in
Romania were rather simple and few techniques. From 1949 and an
internal reorganisation of the federation, from the local championships
teams could be promoted to the central one, based on a pyramidal
hierarchy, while after 1954 the division system is being introduced.

Brazil didn't win its first Olympic medal (silver) until
1984, two years after its first World Championship
medal (also a silver). Since then, however, the
Brazilians have ruled. They own 10 Olympic
indoor medals (second to the former Soviet
Union), nine World Championship indoor medals
(behind Russia/Soviet Union), a world-best 18
FIVB World League medals, and a world-best 17
World Grand Prix medals.
On the beach, Brazil dominates even more. It's won
the most overall Olympic medals (13), by far the
most World Championship medals (15 more than
the second-place country), and it owns too many
records to count on the FIVB World Tour.
In Rio, the host nation secured medals in three of the
four disciplines: indoor gold for the men, beach gold
for the men, and beach silver for the women. The
most amazing thing, though, is that some would say
that haul was a letdown.
74
VOLLEYBALLINTHEWORLD
75
Indoors, the U.S. women were atop the world rankings entering Rio but left with
bronze. They've never won an Olympic gold medal, just three silvers and two
bronzes. The American indoor men own three Olympic gold, tied for first all-time
with Brazil and the Soviet Union. The U.S. men also have two bronze medals,
putting their overall Olympic medal count third.
#246
#2418
The best American argument for volley supremacy comes from this fact: The
U.S. has won 6 beach volleyball gold medals in 6 Olympics (compared to
Brazil's 3). After that, though, there's not much else to say other than the U.S.
volleyball program is better than every other nation except Brazil.

Bronze was all the Americans could produce in Rio, as the indoor men and
women placed third, as did Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross on the beach.

#252 Russia has made little impact in beach volleyball (just one World Championship medal,
though a men's pair, did place fourth in Rio) but has long been a force indoors. The
medal counts are skewed because Russia gets credit for many of the medals won by the
former Soviet Union. But Russia was obviously a large part of the USSR.
#253
Before its dissolution, the Soviet Union captured 12 Olympic volleyball medals,
which remains No. 1 overall. Russia owns 6 such medals - 6 in the past 6 games.
#254
The best Russia could manage in Rio, however,
was fourth place by the men's indoor team (losing
to the U.S. in the bronze-medal match) and fourth
for the beach duo of Viacheslav Krasilnikov and
Konstantin Semenov.
#255
This fifth spot goes to Germany because of its rise
on the beach. German men took the 2012 Olympic
beach volleyball gold, and German women topped
the podium in Rio. Both times, the German duos
knocked off Brazilians in the Olympic final.

Indoors, only East Germany has collected

have collected two medals in the World
Grand Prix. Neither the indoor men nor
women qualified for Rio, however.

the beach usually with her sister Suzanne as partner. In 1970, at the age of 16,
Hyman started playing volleyball professionally.

Angeles Olympics and won the silver medal, the first Olympic medal ever for

advantage.

Carolina. It took 75 hours and 30

volleyball spike that travels at 110 mph (180 km/h).
She was inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame
in 1988 (after herdeath in 1986).
The Women's Sports Foundation dedicated an award in her honour
called the Flo Hyman Memorial Sports Award. The award is given
annually "to a female athlete who captures Hyman's dignity, spirit and
commitment to excellence."
Flo Hyman Quote: "To be true to oneself is the ultimate test in life. To have the
courage and sensitivity to follow your hidden dreams and stand tall against the odds
that are bound to fall in your path. Life is too short and precious to be dealt with in any
other fashion. This thought I hold dear to my heart, and I always try to be true to
myself and others that I encounter along the way."

In a club match called “Top Match” between his Korean club
team & league champion, the 23 year old Leonardo Leyva
Martinez scored a record breaking 59 points (57 points in
attack with a 64% efficiency, 1 block and 1 ace).
Volleyball is a sport that can be played anywhere, on many
types of surfaces. Even more, amateur tournaments have
often mixed gender teams and that makes volleyball,
regardless its surface, more fun and inclusive.
Watching volleyball on television pales in
comparison to some of the events out there
that welcome spectators in droves. When
it’s time to see this sport up close and
personal, the annual schedule of events
offers plenty of opportunities for armchair
fans to witness the action live.

  • 5. #1 The game of volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan and was originally called “mintonette” (referencing its similarity to badminton). The volleyball game was invented 4 years after basketball, and it was designed as a combination of basketball, baseball, tennis and handball. #2 “My coach tells me to give about 75% for volleyball. If I give 100%, my service will kill someone, and my coach doesn't want to deal with the paperwork”. #3 The idea of volleyball was born when Morgan reacheo the conclusion that basketball was an extremely physically demanding sport, running the court up and down, not so easy to be practised by people that weren’t in enough good shape, and so he decided to create a new game, also indoors, following some of the goals of basketball, but for people who weren’t in as good shape. And this is why volleyball was created. HISTORY 5
  • 6. #4 #5 #6 #7 Volleyball was originally demonstrated in the 1924 Olympics in Paris, but not played as an official sport. It was finally added as an official sport in 1964, in Tokyo. After a demonstration, it was Dr Alfred T. Halstead who suggested to Morgan that a better name for the sport than Mintonette would be “Volley Ball”, as the game primarily consisted of volleying a ball back and forth. Morgan liked the new name and re-named the sport as such. In 1916, in the Philippines, an offensive style of passing the ball in a high trajectory to be struck by another player (the set and spike) were introduced and quickly became popular throughout the world. The rule only allowing three hits per side before a ball must be returned wasn’t established until 1920. The Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) was founded in April 1947, in France. The headquarters were established in Paris, where they remained for the first 37 years. Mr. Libaud, President of the French Federation, was elected first President of the FIVB. 6 HISTORY
  • 7. #8 #10 In 1949 the U.S. Volleyball Association sponsored the first National Women Open championships. The first World Championships were organised in 1949 for Men and 1952 for Women. The first televised volleyball matches were at the 1974 World Championships in Mexico, although they were televised only in Japan. In 1981 the NCAA - National Collegiate Athletic Association (a non-profit organization in North America) recognizes the growth of women's volleyball and held its first national championship for women. “Dont ever let the ball hit the ground without a body hitting the ground with it.” #9 7 HISTORY
  • 8. BEACHVOLLEYBALL #12 8 #11 Beach volleyball is an outdoor sand-based court sport played between two teams of two. The aim of the game is to hit an inflated ball over a net that hangs high at the centre of the court and make it land in the opposition's half. #13 #14 The sport began to appear in Europe in 1930. Competitions became common over the following decades and the sport’s popularity increased during the 80s. Most likely originated in 1915 on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii, the first Beach volleyball matches were played with teams of at least 6 players per side, much like indoor volleyball. The concept of the modern two-man beach volleyball game is credited to Paul 'Pablo' Johnson of the Santa Monica, California, Athletic Club. Beach volleyball grew in popularity in the United States during the Great Depression in the 1930s as it was an inexpensive activity.
  • 9. #15 The first professional beach volleyball tournament was the "Olympia World Championship of Beach Volleyball" in 1976, at Will Rogers State Beach in Pacific Palisades, California. The first "world champions" were Greg Lee and Jim Menges. #16 Beach volleyball has become a global sport, with international competition organized by the FIVB. USA and Brazil are the two most successful nations in Olympic beach volleyball. There are many health benefits you can gain from playing volleyball. The exercise aspect from it alone is great for your body weight, your muscle tone and will help work your heart to make it stronger. Beach Volleyball made its first appearance at the Olympics in 1992, as demonstration, and it was included as an official Olympic sport 4 years later. #18 #17 9 BEACHVOLLEYBALL
  • 10. #19 FOOTVOLLEY Another interesting variation on volleyball is Footvolley, which is played such that you are only allowed to use your legs or feet to handle the ball, which is a football one. Footvolley was created by Octavio de Moraes in 1965 in Brazil. #20 Footvolley started in Rio de Janeiro because football was banned on the beach, but volleyball courts were open. The first game of footvolley was played in Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. #21 Teams of footvolley had 5 a side initially. Due to the skill level of the then footvolley athletes (nearly all were professional football players); the ball would rarely drop. Thus, the players began lowering the number of players on each side, eventually settling on 2 vs. 2, which is still in use today. #22 The first event of importance outside Brazil happened in 2003 at Miami Beach. The US Footvolley Association demonstrated the sport at that year’s Fitness Festival where it turned heads. #23 10 First official Footvolley tournament was organized in the 1990s on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
  • 11. #24 In the 80s footvolley arrived in Europe via Portugal. A Portuguese immigrant, Mr. Julião Neto, returned from Brazil and introduced the sport to the local youth. In the next years, several football players started competing and footvolley was spread all over Europe. #26 #25 #27Paraguay was the first world champion of footvolley. The Paraguayan Jesús is considered the best player in the World Championship. There was a famous Pepsi advertising campaign in 2009 that had the participation of football players Lampard, Kaka, Henri, Torres and Messi. In 2011, UAE hosted the Footvolley World Cup with the participation of 27 countries. The event was the first official cup belonging to the International Federation of Volleyball. #28 Every year, several major events are held at beautiful beaches across the globe. For example, USA Footvolley organizes competitions and other events to promote the sport in its home base of Florida as well as other parts of the country such as Virginia and California. 11 FOOTVOLLEY
  • 12. HOOVER-BALL #29 #30 #31 Hoover-ball is basically a combination of tennis, volleyball and medicine ball (a weighted ball roughly the diameter of the shoulders, often used for rehabilitation and strength training). Another variation on volleyball, which is significantly more physically demanding, is Hooverball, invented in 1929 by White House's physician Admiral. Joel T. Boone, to keep president Herbert Hoover physically fit. If you are stressed out, volleyball is a great game for you. With the combination of the quick reactive movements, hands- on hard-hitting of the ball and the constan sprints around the court, you are able to burn a lot of energy and stress. 12 #32 Hoover-ball was played by teams of 2-4 players with a six-pound medicine ball over a net 8 feet high on a court similar to the one used for tennis. The server throws the ball. The opponent must catch it on the fly and immediately return it, attempting to put it where it cannot be reached and returned. The side that misses the ball or throws it out of bounds loses the point.
  • 13. #33 In Hooverball, women are governed by a different regulation, since it takes into account the possibility that there may be more difficulty for some of them due to the weight of the ball. For example, women take off from the midfield line and can return the ball to any area of the opponent's court. And unlike the men who must return the ball at the first touch, women can pass the ball to a partner before throwing it to the opposite field. #34 The average age of the participants was 53. Players would dress in flannel shirts, old trousers, sweaters or leather jackets, rubber-soled shoes, and often hats. #35 The popularity of Hoover-ball lasted only as long as the presidency of Hoover. Even so, the USA still holds Hoover-Ball national championships, in cooperation with the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association. #36 Proper technique requires the use of the whole body when throwing the medicine ball, not just the arms. One is called the body twist: the player holds the ball with both hands a little below the waist. Next, the player bends their knees slightly. To make the throw, the player twists a little more and at the same time pushes with their legs and throws with their arms. This can be a quick, off the hip throw. 13 HOOVER-BALL
  • 14. #37 The longest marathon playing volleyball (indoors) lasted 85 h and was achieved by members of SVU Volleyball (Netherlands) at the Sports Centre Uilenstede in Amstelveen, the Netherlands on 27 to 30 December 2011. The rules of Hooverball have not been modified at all since its invention, that is, today the original regulations are used. Trebuchet is another technique in hoover-ball: The player holds the ball in one hand and fully extends their elbow off to the side of their body. To make the throw the player "cocks" their arm back while keeping the elbow straight, then takes a step forward, twists and releases the ball. If there are more than 4 players in each team, there must be 2 medicinal balls in play at all times, which complicates the game but also makes it more dynamic. #38 HOOVER-BALL 14 #39 #40
  • 15. SEPAKTAKRAW #41 Sepak Takraw is another sport similar to volleyball. It’s a sport played all throughout Southeast Asia and it is also known as kick volleyball. Sepak takraw uses a rattan ball, and the players only use their feet, knee, chest, and head to touch the ball. #42 This sport dates back to the 15th Century and it was believed to have been developed by the Malacca Sultanate. The modern version of sepak takraw is fiercely competitive and began taking shape in Thailand almost 200 years ago. In 1829, the Siam Sports Association drafted the first rules for the game. #43The average volleyball players jump about 300 times during a match. This is easy to do when you add in the jumping for blocking and spiking. 15
  • 16. #44 #45 #46 Sepak takraw may be played indoors or outdoors like at the beach. The taking serves the ball. Once the ball is served, the players are allowed to move freely. Using the hands is not permitted, and each player can touch the ball only once before it is hit over the net. The ball can be returned over the net using any part of the body except for the arm from the shoulder to the point of the finger. Before it was officially called sepak takraw in 1960, the sport was known by different names in different countries: in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, it's called "sepak raga" whereas in Thailand it's commonly known as "takraw". The same game goes by the name of 'sipa' in the Philippines, 'da cau' in Vietnam, 'rago' in Indonesia, and 'kator' in Laos. The governing body for sepak takraw is the ISTAF International Sepak Takraw Federation, formed in 1988. 16 SEPAKTAKRAW
  • 17. #47 #48 #50 The ISTAF currently has 31 national associations under its membership, 23 from Asia, 3 from North America, 2 from South America and 3 from Europe. One of the goals of the Federation is to make it an Olympic sport, and for that will need to spread Sepaktakraw into 75 different countries around the globe, as this is one of the requirements of the International Olympic Council. Volleyball is the second most popular sport, second only to soccer. This is due to the fact that volleyball is open to be played from middle school, high school, college up to the professional and Olympic levels. In 1990, sepak takraw was included at the Asian Games in Beijing. Women also got in on the action with the first women's championships in Thailand hosted in 1997. Sepak takraw was also introduced as a demonstration sport at the 2009 World Games in Chinese Taipei. #49 17 SEPAKTAKRAW
  • 18. JOKGU #53 #51 #52 18 Jokgu is very popular in Korea, with over 1.000 teams in professional, school snd military leagues. It is also one of the most common ways to pass time in the military. A jokgu match is played between 2 teams with 4 players on each team. The ball used has a 20 cm diameter, which is slightly smaller than the ball used for volleyball. Jokgu is a Korean sport which resembles a mix of football and volleyball, was developed by the Republic of Korea Air Force in 1960 as a way to promote exercise on military bases. Sometimes expresses the style of various martial arts movements.
  • 19. It can be played indoors or outdoors. The rules are similar to volleyball, but only your feet, shin and head may have contact with the ball. Each team is allowed a maximum of three touches and the ball has to be returned to the opposing team on the 3rd touch. Jokgu was one of the sports that were premiered at the 1st Annual Leisure Games in Chuncheon, Korea in 2010. Plus, countries with large populations of Koreans such as the US and Canada have Jokgu leagues so the National Team gets plenty of chances to play. There is a movie from 2013 called King of Jokgu. If you want to learn a little more about it, you can watch the show “Cool Kidz on Block” where Jokgu is one of the games they learn and then they challenge teams to see how well they’ve learned the game. Every week in the US approximately 46 million people play volleyball. Worldwide this number is 800 million players a week. #54 #55 #56 #58 You cannot find many websites about leagues and teams in other parts of the world, but there is a possibility that Jokgu will be accepted as an Olympic sport. #57 19 JOKGU
  • 20. 20 There are not particular positions while playing a game of Jokgu, unless a special strategy is planned. When professional players play Jokgu, they plan their positions in different areas in the court. There are 4 main places where player stays, Left Defender, Right Defender, Setter and Spiker. #61 The word jokgu is derived from the Chinese characters for foot (“jok”) and ball (“gu”), and considering how many versions of “football” are already vying for global dominance, it may be easier to remember in Korean. #62 The Best 5 US Volleyball Colleges are: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Stanford University, University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA), University of Florida and Harvard University #59 #60 There are leagues in Europe for a similar sport called Futnet which began in the Czech / Slovak area, and that has since spread to other countries in Europe. #63 JOKGU
  • 21. #66 #65 Water Volleyball has become more popular among seniors as it eases the pressure on the junctions. Worth to mention is that it promotes the active aging. WATERVOLLEY Water volleyball is played by 2 teams, consisting usually of 1 to 4 players. The winner is the first team to score 11 points. However, if the score gets to 10 apiece, then the team to score either 2 points ahead of the other team, or else first to 15 points, wins the game. There are usually 5 sets in a match. The serve is not allowed to be a spike and the receiver cannot spike of the serve either. One team serves for 2 points then the other team serves, and play continues in this fashion. When it is 10 apiece, you start serving 1 serve each. A flip of a coin at the start of the game is used to see who serves first, or else the person in the deep end serves first. The variation of beach volleyball has ended up with Aqua or Water Volleyball. Its floating court has the dimension of a rectangular of min. 3 m to a max. 6 m in length. The net must run across the width and be centred along the length. The first official tournament was held in 1985 in the US. #67 #64 21

Standing volleyball has its roots in Great Britain and was originally played by amputees. It was played by disabled sportsmen long before the international sports federations for the disabled were founded. • 23. #71 #72 #73 The first official international tournament for sitting volleyball under the umbrella of the ISOD (International Sports Organization for the Disabled) took place in 1979 in Haarlem, the Netherlands. Sitting volleyball was accepted as a Paralympic sport in 1980 at Arnhem Paralympic Games. Today sitting volleyball is a popular worldwide game, played in Africa, both Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe, with its own playing concept and identity. In 1956 a new event, designed by two Dutchmen, T. van der Scheer and A. Albers, was introduced in the Netherlands. They called the game sitting volleyball. This is a sport in which the disabled and able-bodied can play together at a high technical level and, as such, represents a good opportunity for co-operation and integration. Some sitting volleyball characteristics and facts: sitting volleyball is a team sport played by two teams, on each side of the court are 6 players; the ball is played by hitting it with any part of the body; blocking the service is allowed by rules; players are required to be in a sitting position during the game. 23 PARALYMPICVOLLEY

  • 28. COURTPOSITIONS #84 #86 #85 #87 Front row players are players who are allowed to block the opponent and attack the ball in the attack zone. Back row ones are players who play defence by digging opponent’s attacks and attack the ball behind attack line (3 m line). Volleyball court divides into attack zone (front row) and defence zone (back row). There are 3 players on each of the zone. Volleyball zones on the court can also be called positions. Players are rotating clockwise on the court after winning the rally after the opponent’s serve. Players have rotational positions (position 5, position 2 etc.) on the court from which they are allowed to move to their playing positions (opposite, middle hitter, etc.) after the serve when appropriate. 28
  • 29. #88 There are 7 known playing positions in volleyball: Outside hitter (wing spiker, left side) Right side hitter (wing spiker, right side) Opposite Hitter (attacker) Setter Middle Blocker (centre, middle hitter) Libero Defensive Specialist (mostly used in the US) Outside Hitter is the player who carries the serve receives responsibility along with the libero. Outside hitter’s passing responsibility makes them extremely important player for the team. The most consecutive volleyball passes is 110 in an event hosted by the Triangle Volleyball Club at the Raleigh Convention Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, on 5 February 2010. Outside hitter most often attacks the balls which setter sets to the antenna to the left side of the court. Therefore after the serve outside hitters place themselves to the left front position. Sometimes setters run offensive plays in which outside hitters run to hit balls “inside” around the middle blockers. #90 #89 #91 29 COURTPOSITIONS
  • 30. #92 #93 #94 #95 #96 COURTPOSITIONS Outside hitters play both the front row and the back row. In modern high level volleyball outside hitters are responsible for hitting the 3 meter line attacks, usually from the middle back position when playing in the back row. Playing on the outside hitter’s position requires great all around skills because they play through the front row and the back row. Right side hitter has the similar role than outside hitter, they play front row and back row and are carrying pass, attack, block, serve and defense responsibilities. Right side hitters aim to place themselves to the right front playing position. Right side hitter can be also called a wing spiker. Wing spikers along with the opposites are often players who score the most points in the game. The record for the most people controlling volleyballs is 299 and was achieved by the people of Taiwan, at YungShin Sports Park, in Taichung County, Taiwan, on 2 October 2008. The participants controlled the ball for at least 10 seconds. 30
  • 31. #99 #97 #98 31 Often counter attack sets after the defensive play goes to the opposite hitters - they carry the responsibility of hitting the ball against a solid block when the pass is off the net. Opposites need to have great blocking skills since they play against the opposite hitter of the opponent or opponent's outside hitter when in the front row. Also, they need to have defensive skills because they also play the back row where they are responsible of hitting 3 meter balls from the right back position. Opposite hitters don’t have the passing responsibilities. They stand behind the passers on the rotation while libero and outside hitters pass the ball and place themselves to the left front, right front or right back playing position. The opposite usually get the most sets in the game. COURTPOSITIONS
  • 32. #100 In professional volleyball opposites along with setters have traditionally been the highest paid individuals - those are volleyball positions in most demand. #102 The setter is the playmaker, point guard or the quarterback of the volleyball team. A setter’s responsibility is to run the team’s offense and build up offensive scoring opportunities for the team. #101 The setter plays both front row and back row, therefore they needs to be able to block, serve and play defence. The setter needs to have good blocking skills because in front row position they play against the opponent’s outside hitter who often carries big load of the attacking responsibility for the team. #103 The most volleyball smashes completed in 1 minute by a team of 4 is 9 and was set by Stephane Mathurin, Denis Damel, Sebastien Le Bosse and Stephane Faure (all France) on the set of L’Ete De Tous Les Records, in Soulac, France on 15 August 2005. 32 COURTPOSITIONS
  • 33. #104 #105 33 Middle Blockers in the back row: in competitive volleyball middle blockers usually play defence only on one rotation - after an own serve. After losing the rally after an own serving turn, a libero usually comes in and replaces the middle blocker. #106 Middle blockers main responsibility is to stop the opponent’s offense, builds a block which stops the ball, or allows the team to dig the ball up. Middle blockers job is to stop the opponent’s middle hitters or wing hitters in co- operation with teammates. They also need to have great attacking and serving skills. The middle blocker usually doesn’t master in defence because they hardly play any of it. However, at junior level practicing defence and even passing is highly recommended for the middles. Junior coaches should allow players to practice all the skills equally to ensure their overall skill development. This improves their athleticism and prepares players to play other positions, they may not be tall enough to play middle in the future. COURTPOSITIONS
  • 34. Since playing in the back court only, the libero needs to have the best passing and defensive skills in the team. The libero need to have exceptional serve receive skills because often they pass a larger area than other serve receivers in the team. #108 The libero can replace any player on the court and most often replaces middle blockers. The libero is not allowed to serve the ball (Some leagues in US allow liberos to serve). #107 The libero is fairly new position in volleyball and is a back row specialist who is allowed to play back court only. The libero wears a different colour shirt in the team and is allowed to enter and exit the game without substitution request. #109 34 COURTPOSITIONS
  • 35. 35 #110 #111 #112 Defensive specialists carry a serve receive and defense responsibility in the back row. Defensive specialists are allowed to serve and often play the full back row rotation before giving the spot in the front row to the offensive player again. Aged 44 years, Karch Kiraly (the USA, 3 November 1960) became the oldest player to win an AVP tour title, the Huntington Beach Open, in Huntington Beach, California, USA on 13 August 2005. Most leagues in United States allow unlimited substitutions therefore very often in the team there are defensive specialists. Defensive specialists in US enter the game to replace players who in international volleyball would be playing both the front and the back row. COURTPOSITIONS
  • 36. EQUIPMENT #113 #115 #114 Perhaps the shoes are the most essential equipment in volleyball. What should you be looking at when buying volleyball shoes? The support and cushioning - this is provided for by the inner sole of the shoe. Padded and cushioned forefoot and rear footpads are important as volleyball players often have to spend a long day on their feet when participating in all-day tournaments Having a shoe that offers you the comfort you need, will enable you to perform at your peak at all times. The midsole of the volleyball shoe is designed to absorb the shock of impact from jumping, quick stops and fast changes of direction. It also needs to be strong yet flexible to give you the best performance The stability is one of the most important aspects of a volleyball shoe. Volleyball players need to move quickly around the court in multiple directions. Quick changes of direction are also common. Moving forward, backward and left to right or vice versa quickly is imperative, you go where the ball goes. 36
  • 37. 37 #116 This is one of the most important aspects of a Volleyball shoe. Volleyball players need to move quickly around the court in multiple directions. Quick changes of direction are also common. Moving forward, backward and left to right or vice versa quickly is imperative, you go where the ball goes. #118 Having a shoe that offers the stability to cope with this type of movement is vital to prevent injuries such as rolling your ankle. It should also provide the kind of stability you need to prevent ankle injuries, and lessen the chances of you sustaining one during a game. Although most athletic shoes will provide you with the stability to move forward they may not provide the multidirectional movement necessary in a volleyball game. #119 The traction on the volleyball shoe is also vital. It needs to have a superb grip as you will be moving fast, stopping and changing direction quickly, your shoe needs to keep you stable on the ground without allowing you to slip, fall and injure yourself. The grip your volleyball shoe offers is one of the most important aspects of your shoe. #117 With a combined age of 76 years, Karch Kiraly (USA, b. 3 November 1960) and Brent Doble (USA, b. 3 January 1970) became the oldest team to win a pro beach volleyball tournament, at the Huntington Beach Open, in Huntington Beach, California, USA on 17 August 2003. • 38. A valve permits the internal air pressure to be adjusted. In a break from the traditional construction, in 2008, the FIVB adopted as its official indoor ball a new Mikasa with dimples and only 8 panels for a softer touch and truer flight. #120 #121 #122 Volleyball is a fast and furious game that demands a lot from your feet This means that your feet will get hot and sweaty. A shoe that allows for adequate airflow to keep your feet cool and dry is essential. The cooler your feet is the more comfortable you will feel and you will perform a lot better on the courts. Nonetheless, besides the shoes, you need a ball that is particular for this sport. Volleyballs are round and traditionally consist of 18 nearly rectangular panels of synthetic or genuine leather, arranged in 6 identical sections of 3 panels each, wrapped around a bladder. 38 EQUIPMENT
  • 39. #123 #125 #126 #124 EQUIPMENT 39 Beach volleyballs are slightly larger than standard indoor balls, have a rougher external texture, and lower internal pressure. They can be brightly coloured or solid white. The very first volleyballs were made from leather panelling over a rubber carcass. The equipment sure helps, but is not your only “ally” you should take into consideration. Let’s see some facts about the diet. While nutrition on the court on match day is important, a healthy eating pattern off the court will provide an essential base for a fit, fast and lean volleyball player. Before the rally scoring was implemented points could only be earned by the team who was currently serving. If a serve was missed or the other team won the ball, then no point was given. At 17 years, Xue Chen (China, b.18 February 1989) became the youngest player to win an international beach volleyball title, the China Shanghai Jinshan Open, in Shanghai, China, on 28 May 2006.
  • 40. TRAININGDIET #127 A daily intake for a player should be based around nutrient-rich carbohydrates, (grainy breads, brown rice, quinoa, whole meal pasta); lean protein sources, (lean red meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, dairy and lentils) and healthy fat sources, (avocado, olive oil, nuts and fish); as well as fruit and plenty vegetables. Individual intake will be determined by the frequency of training, size of athlete, individual requirements and adjustment for growth in younger athletes and should be discussed with an Accredited Sports Dietitian to ensure an athlete’s goals are met. Immediately before training or competition having a small amount of fluid (200-300 ml) not only helps with hydration, but also prepares the gut for accepting fluids throughout the game. The need to remain well hydrated, drinking regularly throughout the day, especially with meals or snacks is important. Players should aim for regular amounts of pale yellow urine over the day as a useful indicator of good hydration status. #129 #128 #130 40
  • 41. #131 Since adequate hydration is essential for performance particularly skill and decision-making, it is an important consideration for volleyball players. Volleyball is usually played indoors in a controlled environment although, players should be aware that they can still lose significant amounts of body fluids when playing at these venues due to the physical demands and intensity of a match. Athletes should maintain good hydration through the regular fluid intake, and replace fluid deficit accrued during training or a match. Water is a good option, although a sports or electrolyte drink may be beneficial if playing for longer than 1 h. The record for the largest beach volleyball tournament is for the senior male division of the Usedom BeachCup 2007 with 236 players in the division, played in Karlshagen, Insel Usedom, Germany, from 27 to 29 July 2007. The entire event consisted of 890 participants across six different divisions. The tournament was formed by 334 teams. 41 #132 #133 TRAININGDIET
  • 42. A meal or snack should be consumed in the 2-4 hours prior to the start of a match. Staying hydrated is vitally important during longer games and in hot weather to maintain performance. Environmental conditions and individual sweat posses are the main determinants of fluid needs. #134 #135 #136 Food and fluid choices should be familiar to the individual to avoid unexpected problems (e.g. stomach upset). A simple way to avoid any problems is to ensure that all food consumed in the hours leading into important matches has been trialled in similar conditions or matches. #137 For an individual with a healthy base diet as described above, carbohydrate loading should not be essential due to the low level of aerobic activity coupled with the downtime off-court available to eat and drink within a match or between matches in a tournament setting. 42 TRAININGDIET

  • 46. VOLLEYACCIDENTS Ankle: sprains are the most frequent type. And while the most are not severe those are can result in fractures and ligament /tendon injuries that may require surgery. Knee: jumper’s knee (patellar tendonitis) is when the tendons around the kneecap (patella) become irritated by small micro-tears, resulting in knee pain and stiffness. Shoulder: the high-stress motions of spiking and serving are done by competitive players can result in injuries to the tendons and ligaments that support the shoulder. Fingers: players can suffer jammed, dislocated and fractured fingers from contact with the ball, the net and even their teammates. Long-term issues can include pain and deformity. Lower back: lower back pain is fairly common among volleyball players as a result of muscle or ligament strain. #150 #152 #153#151 #154 46
  • 47. The tallest volleyball players are Dmitrij Muserski (RUS) with 218 cm, and Jekatierina Gamowa (RUS) with 202 cm. At the opposite pole, the shortest players are Oh Jung-Rok (KOR) with 170 cm, and Yūko Sano I Yoshie Takeshita (JAP) with 159 cm. #157 INJURIES #155 Rotator Cuff Tendinitis - During serving and spiking, the rotator cuff muscles are important in generating the necessary power to move the shoulder. While rarely completely torn in young players, these muscles can get irritated or fatigued with overuse. Often, rest and physical therapy services may be enough to resolve pain. If pain persists, talk to your physician. 47 #156 Finger Injuries - Fingers are vulnerable to injury during volleyball activities, such as blocking, setting, and digging. Common finger injuries include fractures, dislocations, and tendon and ligament tears. If youare unable to bend the finger, consultation with your sports medicineprofessional or athletic trainer is important. Treatment can vary significantlydepending on the injury.
  • 48. Ankle Sprains - Ankle injuries are the most common injury to volleyball players and responsible for the most lost playing time. Ankle sprains should be immobilized for as short as time as possible to allow for quicker rehabilitation. Every ankle sprain needs an 8-week course of daily rehabilitation exercise to decrease the risk of re-injury. Usually, injuries can be treated non-operatively with bracing and physical therapy or home rehabilitation exercises. #158 #159 #160 Occasionally, though, ankle sprains can be associated with subtle fractures or cartilage injuries. Continued pain after several weeks should prompt further evaluation, including X rays and/or MRIs. Return to play is usually allowed once players have no pain and are able to support their body weight while standing on the toes. Surgery is reserved for those with recurrent ankle sprains that have not responded to conservative measures or those with specific associated fractures. #161 Dennis Hare and Jill Esteras wrote the first book on the subject of beach volleyball: “The Art of Beach Volleyball”, published in 1981. 48 INJURIES
  • 49. Patellar tendonitis - it is inflammation of the tendon that connects the kneecap to the tibia (or shin bone). Patellar tendinitis is common in any athlete subjected to repetitive, forceful jumping activities, such as spiking and blocking. Patellar tendon straps are helpful in unloading the stress to the patellar tendon and are often the first line of treatment. Physical therapy and athletic training services focused on stretching and strengthening are also helpful. Usually ACL tears are associated with a “pop” and immediate knee swelling. Examination by a physician and MRI are often used to confirm the ACL injury. Because ACL tears do not heal, those wishing to return to sports activities are encouraged to have the ACL reconstructed. Recovery time is usually at least six to nine months. There are training techniques that may decrease the risk of ACL injury in jumping athletes, especially females. #163 #164 49 #162 Specific attention to landing from jumping (eccentric contraction of the quadriceps muscles) in rehabilitation is often beneficial. Occasionally, patellar tendinitis persists despite therapy and surgery is required. INJURIES
  • 50. #166 #168 #169 INJURIES #165 Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injury – like ankle sprains, most ACL injuries in volleyball players occur when a player lands awkwardly after jumping. The low back is a common source of chronic pain among volleyball players. The cause of most low-back pain is related to muscle or ligament strain. The pain usually resolves with rest, physical therapy and athletic training services. #167 If low-back pain is accompanied by pain that radiates down the legs and numbness or weakness in the foot or ankle, the culprit may be a herniated disk. In cases of radiating pain, an MRI may be helpful in evaluating the presence of a disc herniation. In most cases, volleyball players can return to play once the pain, numbness, and weakness resolve. Volleyball Fundamentals is a book with instructions on how to play volleyball for students. The book was written by Joel Dearing and published in 2003. Volleyball players may also be at increased risk for a sort of stress fracture in the low back called spondylolysis. If pain persists more than a month and is worse with bending backwards, consider consulting a physician. 50

  • 63. 63 The key to a good overhand serve - “While there are several steps or pieces to the overhead serve, I think as players begin to become strong enough to use it, they need to remember to accelerate through the ball. A lot of younger players swing at the ball and slow down at contact. At Nike Volleyball Camps, we're encouraging them to continue to swing or accelerate through the ball to get the power they need.” How to improve service receiving - “There is only one way to really get better and that is reps. I'd encourage newer players to learn to set the platform to the target with as little motion as possible From relaxed positions with the arms in front just extend the hands forward to create the angle you're looking for.” How to improve blocking skills - As you go up in level, you need to pay attention to where the hitters are and identify them before the play. If you know where their approach is coming from, you can adjust your starting position and put yourself in a position to be disruptive to them. Once the ball leaves the setter's hands, the eyes really need to be able to come off the ball and find the hitter and then have both the hitter and ball in their focus at the attack. Too often players follow the ball and miss all the clues of the hitter's approach.” #206 #207 #208 Let’s get to check a bit deeper the techniques used in volleyball. In a back row attack, the back row player jumps from behind the white line, also known as the ten-foot line, or the 3-meter line and contacts the ball. What Position Should You Play in Volleyball? In volleyball, the position you play should be based on the type of player you are, your size and agility, and the skills at which you excel. The outside hitter is a position that requires a good all-around player. The team relies on the outside hitter for a significant amount of serve reception. It is not only responsible for blocking the other team’s opposite but needs to help the middle blocker with some of the quick attacks and setter dumps. The outside hitter's best skills are: Hitting (front and back row), passing and blocking. 64
  • 65. 65 The middle blocker is mostly responsible for keeping the opponent’s hitters in check. A good middle is great at reading the setter to determine where she will set the ball and is quick enough to get there and put up a solid block. The middle blocker's best skills are: blocking, hitting, reading the setter and lateral movement. The volleyball setter is often referred to as the quarterback of the sport. The setter has to be a smart tactician and needs to know the team better than anybody to determine who the set should go to and when. Good setters can deliver the ball where it needs to be when setting underhand or overhand. Setters also need to be good diggers, great communicators, and team leaders. The setter's best skills are: all-around ball control, setting (overhand and underhand), digging, communication and team leadership. The opposite is responsible for blocking the other team’s best outside hitter, so they need to be able to set the block well for the middle and take away a good portion of the court with good blocking position. The opposite's best skills are: hitting (front and back row) and blocking. #213 #214 #215 TECHNIQUES

The libero's best skills are: Ball control, passing, digging and setting. In volleyball, a down ball occurs when an attacker hits the ball overhand while standing on the ground, usually off the net. A back row attack in volleyball occurs when one of the three back row players attacks the ball and contacts it at the top of the net. • 74. #243 #244 #245 Brazil didn't win its first Olympic medal (silver) until 1984, two years after its first World Championship medal (also a silver). Since then, however, the Brazilians have ruled. They own 10 Olympic indoor medals (second to the former Soviet Union), nine World Championship indoor medals (behind Russia/Soviet Union), a world-best 18 FIVB World League medals, and a world-best 17 World Grand Prix medals. On the beach, Brazil dominates even more. It's won the most overall Olympic medals (13), by far the most World Championship medals (15 more than the second-place country), and it owns too many records to count on the FIVB World Tour. In Rio, the host nation secured medals in three of the four disciplines: indoor gold for the men, beach gold for the men, and beach silver for the women. The most amazing thing, though, is that some would say that haul was a letdown. 74 VOLLEYBALLINTHEWORLD
  • 75. 75 Indoors, the U.S. women were atop the world rankings entering Rio but left with bronze. They've never won an Olympic gold medal, just three silvers and two bronzes. The American indoor men own three Olympic gold, tied for first all-time with Brazil and the Soviet Union. The U.S. men also have two bronze medals, putting their overall Olympic medal count third. #246 #2418 The best American argument for volley supremacy comes from this fact: The U.S. has won 6 beach volleyball gold medals in 6 Olympics (compared to Brazil's 3). After that, though, there's not much else to say other than the U.S. volleyball program is better than every other nation except Brazil. #247 Bronze was all the Americans could produce in Rio, as the indoor men and women placed third, as did Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross on the beach. • 77. VOLLEYBALLINTHEWORLD 77 #252 Russia has made little impact in beach volleyball (just one World Championship medal, though a men's pair, did place fourth in Rio) but has long been a force indoors. The medal counts are skewed because Russia gets credit for many of the medals won by the former Soviet Union. But Russia was obviously a large part of the USSR. #253 Before its dissolution, the Soviet Union captured 12 Olympic volleyball medals, which remains No. 1 overall. Russia owns 6 such medals - 6 in the past 6 games. #254 The best Russia could manage in Rio, however, was fourth place by the men's indoor team (losing to the U.S. in the bronze-medal match) and fourth for the beach duo of Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Konstantin Semenov. #255 This fifth spot goes to Germany because of its rise on the beach. German men took the 2012 Olympic beach volleyball gold, and German women topped the podium in Rio. Both times, the German duos knocked off Brazilians in the Olympic final.
