5. ROAD SAFETY :
Road safety refers to the methods and
measures used to prevent road users from being
killed or seriously injured. Typical road users
include pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, vehicle
passengers, and passengers of on-road public
transport.
6. HOW TO KEEP YOURSELF SAFE ON ROADS
âą Buckle up! â Ensure that you always wears the seat belt, or is secured
in a car seat.
âą Exhibit patience when driving â set an example for your kids to be calm
and not rush on the road.
âą Be punctual and disciplined to avoid speeding and rash driving.
âą Do not use mobile phones or other gadgets when driving.
7. RULES FOR ROAD SAFETY
1. Know your signals.
2. Stop, Look, and cross.
3. Dont run on roads
4. Always use sidewalks
5. Never stick hands oustside the vehicle.
6. Never cross roads at bends.
7. Be seen, stay safe.
8. Donât rush.
8. ROAD SAFETY FACTS :âą Vulnerable road users like pedestrians, cyclists, and bikers account for around 50% of
deaths due to road accidents.
âą Wearing quality helmets reduces the chance of injury and death due to crash by
40% .
âą Reducing or controlling the speed can reduce the chances of an injury during an
accident.
âą Child and infant car seats can decrease the number of children dying in road
accidents by 54 to 80%. Making child restraint mandatory in vehicles can decrease
child deaths by 35% .
âą The chances of death by accident can be decreased by 51% with the proper use of
seat belt.
âą For every 1km/h that you reduce your speed by, you mitigate the risk of accident by
2%.
9. WHY IS ROAD SAFETY IMPORTANT ?
âą Children and young people are at significant risk on our roads. Road
trauma is the leading cause of death and the second most frequent
cause of hospitalisation among children in Australia (World Health
Organisation, 2008).
âą We all need to learn to use the road responsibly. There is evidence that
children start learning about the road system from a very early age and
that this can lead to safer behaviours in later life.
âą Road safety education plays an important role in shaping the attitudes
and behaviours of children and young people â ensuring they become
responsible drivers, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists.
