7. Expert Opinion ____
7.1 Grammer
GRAMMER AG is specialized in developing and manufacturing components and systems for car
interiors as well as driver and passenger seats for offroad vehicles, trucks, buses, and trains. One
of the most important GRAMMER innovations for automotive applications includes the Crash-
Active Headrest, which significantly reduces the risk of injury to the neck in the event of a rear-end
collision.
Ralf Hoppe, Vice President Investor Relations, Communications & Marketing provided answers to
visiongain’s questions in May 2013 and we are grateful for his contribution.
7.1.1 Grammer on Key Trends and Developments in the Global
Automotive Passive Safety Systems Market
Visiongain: What would you say are the key trends and developments in the automotive passive
safety systems market and why?
Grammer: The most important factor is and will be the optimal adjustment and setting of the
different interfaces between passengers and the vehicle to provide maximum safety. For example
seat position in the vehicle and adjustment of the seat and its different components such as
headrests and armrests.
7.1.2 Grammer’s Future in the Passive Safety Systems Market
Visiongain: What is the focus of Grammer’s efforts in regard to the automotive passive safety
systems market?
Grammer: The safety relevant manual settings (e.g. manual adjust of headrest horizontally and
vertically) have to be very simple and extremely user-friendly for the passengers.
For vehicles with Car-to-X communication an automatic and electronic adjustment is necessary to
adjust the headrest to the optimal position or to activate the crash-active systems of a headrest in
order to fully use the benefits of a Car-to-X communication.

8. Leading Companies in the Global Automotive Passive
Safety Systems Market
This chapter profiles some of the major companies in the global automotive passive safety systems
market. First a number of major car and Light Duty Vehicle (LDV) manufacturers will be listed after
which several component and safety systems manufacturers will be profiled. The automotive
market is dominated by a small number of large manufacturers. Nevertheless, the substantial
number of global sales and shifts in regional balance are constantly offering growth opportunities to
smaller players as well as prospects for new entrants. This chapter will therefore attempt to show a
representative sample of the major companies rather than an exhaustive one. We have
endeavoured to ensure that all information was accurate at the time when our research was
undertaken.
8.1 Leading Vehicle Manufacturers in the Global Automotive Passive
Safety Systems Market
The global automotive passive safety systems market is ultimately driven by vehicle
manufacturers, or OEMs, who decide which passive safety systems are fitted to which model.
These decisions are based on price, attractiveness to consumers, legislation and availability.
Presence of carmakers in the passive safety systems market is based on total global sales but also
on the segments where the company is present. Consequently some of the smaller carmakers
have strong positions and play leading roles in research and development (R&D) into passive
safety systems.
