3D Printing for Healthcare - R&D,
Industry and Market 2014-2024
market for healthcare will expand at a CAGR of 14.89%. In 2024, sales of 3D printing technology
and 3D printed products for healthcare in Brazil will generate $169m, accounting for 1.98% of the
global market.

4.10 The Indian Market is at an Early Stage
In 2012, sales of 3D printing technology and 3D printed products for healthcare in India generated
revenue of $14m, accounting for 1.3% of the world market. 3D printing is at an early stage in this
region. At present, the most significant application of 3D printing in the Indian healthcare sector is
the production of prototypes and medical models. There are several companies which offer this
service, including Protosys Technologies and Imaginarium.
Mumbai-based Protosys Technologies was established in 1996 and provides stereolithography,
selective laser sintering and fused deposition modelling, as well as basic 3D printing for a range of
industries. However, the field of medicine is an important focus. The company has been providing
medical models for surgeons since 2000, it is reported. These medical models can be produced in
under one week and allow surgeons to more effectively visualise the trauma, plan surgical
procedures, reduce surgery time, and design custom implants for the patient. As healthcare
spending in India increases over the forecast period and knowledge of the benefits of medical
modelling increase, demand for these 3D printed products will increase.
Imaginarium is India’s largest provider of 3D printing, that company reports, providing rapid
prototyping and rapid manufacturing. Imaginarium provides 3D printing solutions to the medical
manufacturing industry and medical professionals in India, including prototyping and low volume
production of medical devices. These include dental, orthopaedic and cranio-maxillofacial implants,
surgical guides, custom prosthetics and anatomical models. Imaginarium has been established for
over 30 years, but the application of the company’s services to the medical industry is relatively
new.
The market is in an early stage at present. However, the demand for 3D printed medical and dental
implants will increase rapidly during the forecast period 2014-2024 as knowledge and affordability
of the technology increases. Healthcare spending in the country is set to increase, with a key focus
th

of the government’s 12 five-year-plan 2012-2017 on a thrust in the medical industry. This will
drive the uptake of new technology, such as 3D printing, we believe. However, this uptake will be
restrained by the high cost of 3D printing technology and the raw materials required.
Between 2012 and 2018, the Indian market for 3D printing for healthcare will expand at a CAGR of
26.1%. This rate of growth will slow towards the end of the forecast period, restrained by the high

cost of the technology and the continued prominence of other manufacturing methods in the
medical implants market. The penetration of 3D printed medical implants will slow.

  • 20. 3D Printing for Healthcare - R&D, Industry and Market 2014-2024 market for healthcare will expand at a CAGR of 14.89%. In 2024, sales of 3D printing technology and 3D printed products for healthcare in Brazil will generate $169m, accounting for 1.98% of the global market. 4.10 The Indian Market is at an Early Stage In 2012, sales of 3D printing technology and 3D printed products for healthcare in India generated revenue of $14m, accounting for 1.3% of the world market. 3D printing is at an early stage in this region. At present, the most significant application of 3D printing in the Indian healthcare sector is the production of prototypes and medical models. There are several companies which offer this service, including Protosys Technologies and Imaginarium. Mumbai-based Protosys Technologies was established in 1996 and provides stereolithography, selective laser sintering and fused deposition modelling, as well as basic 3D printing for a range of industries. However, the field of medicine is an important focus. The company has been providing medical models for surgeons since 2000, it is reported. These medical models can be produced in under one week and allow surgeons to more effectively visualise the trauma, plan surgical procedures, reduce surgery time, and design custom implants for the patient. As healthcare spending in India increases over the forecast period and knowledge of the benefits of medical modelling increase, demand for these 3D printed products will increase. Imaginarium is India’s largest provider of 3D printing, that company reports, providing rapid prototyping and rapid manufacturing. Imaginarium provides 3D printing solutions to the medical manufacturing industry and medical professionals in India, including prototyping and low volume production of medical devices. These include dental, orthopaedic and cranio-maxillofacial implants, surgical guides, custom prosthetics and anatomical models. Imaginarium has been established for over 30 years, but the application of the company’s services to the medical industry is relatively new. The market is in an early stage at present. However, the demand for 3D printed medical and dental implants will increase rapidly during the forecast period 2014-2024 as knowledge and affordability of the technology increases. Healthcare spending in the country is set to increase, with a key focus th of the government’s 12 five-year-plan 2012-2017 on a thrust in the medical industry. This will drive the uptake of new technology, such as 3D printing, we believe. However, this uptake will be restrained by the high cost of 3D printing technology and the raw materials required. Between 2012 and 2018, the Indian market for 3D printing for healthcare will expand at a CAGR of 26.1%. This rate of growth will slow towards the end of the forecast period, restrained by the high www.visiongain.com Page 85
