What is Cognitive Computing ?
Cognitive computing refers to the development of computer system
modeled after the human brain. Cognitive computing aims to
develop a coherent, unified, universal mechanism inspired by the
mind's capabilities. It strives to provide methods to construct and
operate systems that ―know what they are doing‖
Cognitive computing is combination of three different technologies.
They are Neuroscience, Super computing and Nanotechnology.
Neuroscience
Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system.
It is an interdisciplinary science that collaborates with other fields such
as chemistry, computer science, engineering, linguistics,
mathematics, medicine and allied disciplines, philosophy, physics,
and psychology.
Cognitive Science
The term "cognitive" in "cognitive science" is "used for any kind
of mental operation or structure that can be studied in precise terms".
Cognitive Neuroscience
Cognitive neuroscience is an academic field concerned with
the scientific study of biological substrates underlying cognition, with a
specific focus on the neural substrates of mental processes.
Supercomputing
A supercomputer is a computer at the frontline of contemporary
processing capacity--particularly speed of calculation.
IBM-Watson
Watson is an artificially intelligent computer system capable of
answering questions posed in natural language, developed in IBM's
DeepQA project by a research team led by principal
investigator David Ferrucci. Watson was named after IBM's Thomas J.
Watson.
Watson is a Question answering (QA) computing system built by IBM.
IBM describes it as "an application of advanced Natural Language
Processing, Information Retrieval, Knowledge
Representation and Reasoning, and Machine Learning technologies
to the field of open domain question answering" which is "built on
IBM's DeepQA technology for hypothesis generation, massive
evidence gathering, analysis, and scoring.
Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter on
an atomic and molecular scale. The earliest, widespread description
of nanotechnology referred to the particular technological goal of
precisely manipulating atoms and molecules for fabrication of macro
scale products, also now referred to as molecular nanotechnology.
Nanotechnology may be able to create many new materials and
devices with a vast range of applications, such as
in medicine, electronics, biomaterials and energy production.
IBM 5 IN 5
One of the most intriguing aspects of this shift is their ability to give
machines some of the capabilities of the right side of the human brain.
New technologies makes it possible for machines to mimic and augment
the senses.
Last year, IBM focused on IBM next 5 IN 5, their 2012 forecast of inventions
that will change our world in next five years, on how computers will mimic
the senses.
IBM 5 IN 5
Processing sights and sounds requires eyes, ears and, most
important, a brain-right?
But what if your hardware shared your senses?
Touch
Within the next five years, your mobile device will let you touch what
you’re shopping for online. It will distinguish fabrics, textures, and
weaves so that you can feel a sweater, jacket, or upholstery – right
through the screen.
Sight
Within the next five years, computers will be able to sense,
understand, and act upon these large volumes of visual information to
help us make better decisions and gain insights into a world they
couldn’t previously decipher.
Hearing
Imagine knowing the meaning behind your child’s cry, or maybe even
your pet dog’s bark, through an app on your smartphone. In the next
five years, we will be able to do just that thanks to algorithms
embedded in cognitive systems that will understand any sound.
Taste
Within next five years, computers will be able to construct never-
before-heard-of recipes to delight palates – even those with health or
dietary constraints – using foods’ molecular structure.
Smell
Within the next five years, your mobile device will likely be able to tell
you you’re getting a cold before your very first sneeze.
Future of Cognitive Computing
- Modeling the brain
- Smart cars
- Automating Wars
- In the doctor’s office, to diagnose illnesses and choose among
treatment options.
- In the pharmaceutical industry
- We believe that cognitive systems will help us make sense of our
amazingly complex world and provide a new collaborative
dimension to human reasoning and decision making—whether it’s
for business leaders reshaping industries or regular people trying to
choose careers or investment strategies. These technologies will
help create new products, services, companies and entire
industries.
