SYNOPSIS
This Project Report On Residential Space Planning Has Been Created, Developed
And Designed By Me, During My Study Of Residential Spaces Confirming To NSQF
Level 5 Of NSDC.
In This Project I Have Discussed How Residential Spaces Need To Be Devised As Per
Climatology And Bio Climatic Design Of Rajasthan, Green Building Concepts, Using
Orientation, Daylight, Ventilation And Landscaping Of Land. Through Landscaping I
Learnt That The Micro Climate Can Be Lowered By 6- 8° On The Plot And This Has
Been Inculcated In My Design Of Residential Plot. Further I Paid Attention To The
Building Bye-laws Of The Plot And Than As Per The Study Of Spaces And How
Planning Is Done As Per Louis Kahn Principles, I Devised The Plan Of The
Residential Area; Using Concept Of Watcher For A Living Room, Attending To
Served And Servant Areas.
While Devising The Plan I Even Paid Attention On Different Types Of Approaches
And Entrances To The House and Levelling Of Space. I Even Paid Attention In The
Planning As To How Shapes Develops Into Forms And Forms Follows Functions. The
Way Forms Are Clustered To Make A Cohesive Zone Of Space Planning.
Finally I Studied About The Client And Created A Mood Board, Furniture Selections
And Accessories Board And Designed The Space. All The Design Development
Creation Of Orthographic Projection Has Been Done Using Google Sketch Up.
I Request You To Kindly Go Through My Portfolio Pages. As A Novice In This Field I
Have Tried My Level Best To Bring Out The Best Of My Knowledge Gained At
Dezyne E’cole College.

INTRODUCTION
To Be Creative Is A Part Of Human Psyche. It Is One Of Those Traits That Set Us
Apart From Other Animal Species And We Have Practiced It For Millennia. Even
When Our Prime Need Was To Find Food And Shelter, We Felt A Desire To Leave
Our Mark On The Environment That We Inhabited. Whether This Was To Satisfy
Some Deep Spiritual Calling Or A Method Of Passing On A Vital Knowledge To
Fellow Group Members, Or Whether It Was Simply A Way For An Individual To
Satisfy An Urge To Leave His Mark For Future Generations, We Will Never Know.
Today, These Primitive And Fundamental Indicators Of Human Nature May Be
Expressed In More Sophisticated And Developed Ways, But The Primal Simplicity Of
Our Human Desire To Make A “Better” And More Comfortable World For Ourselves
Is Evidenced Through, Amongst Other Things., How We Organize The Space That
We Inhabit, And The Aesthetic That We Make For Them. As We Have Become More
Affluent And Blessed With More Leisure Time, Style Has Become More Important
To Us And Is Something With Which We Want To Imbue Our Homes. But ‘Style’ Is A
Very Personal Notion, So Why Should Anyone Look To Employ Someone Else, An
Interior Designer, To Tell Them What Is Right? Why, For That Matter, Should We As A
Designer Presume To Impose Our Ideas Upon A Space That Isn’t Our Own?
The Answer Of This Interior Design Is All About So Much More Than ‘What Looks
Right’. It Is About Taking Holistic View Of The Way That Individuals Use And Enjoy
The Spaces That They Inhabit. It Is About Finding And Crating A Cohesive Answer To
A Set Of Problems And Dressing The Solutions So As To Unify And Strengthen Our
Experience Of The Space. And So There Is The Need For Professional Interior
Designers.

Good Interior Design Adds A New Dimension To A Space. It Can Increase Our
Efficiency In The Way We Go About Our Daily Lives And It Adds Depth
Understanding And Meaning Of The Built Environment. Thoughtful And Well-
crafted Design Makes A Space Easier To Understand And Experiencing Such A Space
Lifts The Spirit. It Is, Therefore, Not Just About Aesthetic, It Is A Practical And
Philosophical Design. Beautiful Spaces Betray A Logical And Rational Questioning Of
The Status Quo And Can Be An Honest Attempt To Find New And Exciting Way To
Lead Our Lives. Planners Are Often Asked To Make Estimates Of Space Needs Before
Having An Opportunity To Make Policies Or Detailed Plans For Operations. Here The
Interior Designer Studies About The Space And Its Surrounding Influences On It ,
Like Orientation Of The Space ,Day Lighting, Ventilation, HVAC ,Lighting,
Landscaping All Depending On The Personality Of The Space. These Then Lead To
Development Of The Structural Features Of The Building As It Influences The
Utilization Of The Space.
Interior Decorators On The Other Hand Generally Work With Existing Spaces That
Do Not Require Physical Alteration. Through The Use Of Color ,Light And Surface
Finish , They Will Transform The Look Of The Space, Perhaps Making It Suitable To
Function In A Different Way From That For Which It Was Originally Designed , But
With Very Little Or No Change To The Structure Of The Building. An Interior
Designer Will Completely Handle The Space Planning And Creation Of Decorative
Scheme At The Same Time As Considering Major Structural Changes. Lets
Understand The Work Of An Interior Designer.
Interior Design As A Skill Branch : Building Engineering Was A Pioneer Design Field
Out Of Which Many Specialties Like Architecture, Civil Engineering And Interior
Designing Have Separated

INTERIOR DESIGNING
Building And Design Interventions : A Building Once Constructed Is Initially Readied
For Occupation By The Original Designer . However Buildings Last For Ages And
During The Lifespan , Must Be Altered And Updated Several Times. Architects Or
Building Engineers Are Unavailable , Or Have No Income Incentive For Such
‘Frivolity’. During Early Middle Ages Or Perhaps Even Earlier , Low-skilled ‘Art-
painters’ Were Hired To Paint And Decorate Old Buildings Inside And Outside . The
Painters Known As Decorators , Worked Along With Associates , To Not Only Paint
But Undertake Repairs, Make Furniture And Update Furnishings. Many Crafts-
persons Like , Iron-smiths, Guilders, Glass Blowers , Weavers, Embroiders, Rug And
Carpet Makers, Sculptors, Mural Makers Were Associated With The Decorator As
Jobbers And Suppliers . Later All These Services Were Handled By A Person , The
Interior Decoration Was A Service For The Building But Always Was Distinct From
The Architect From The Architecture Or Building Engineering. Interior Decorator
Was Neither A Variant, Nor Subservient To The Architect.
Interior Decorator To Interior Designer : Interior Decorator Worked As A Facilitator,
Scheduling And Coordinating The Activities While Supervising The Quality Of
Various Vendors. The Interior Decorator Now Even Offered Comprehensive Design
Solutions With Alternative To Their Clients. Interior Decoration Became A Well-
Documented Strategy, Serving Two Basic Purpose. It Helped Creation Of A
Functional System By Coordinating Skills, Materials And Objects Sourced From
Different Agencies. It Showed The User Of Client, In Advance, The Solution, In A
Respective Form A Surrogate Once The First Objective Was Achieved Without Being
Continuously Present On The Site It Was Possible For The Interior In Charge Person
To Devote More Tome And Attention To The Second Objective. The Interior
Decorator Began To Play A Very Active Role Of A Professional Interior Designer
Rather Than Being Simply A Site Bound Interior Contractor.

INTERIOR DESIGNING
Interior Design And Other Design Professions : Interior Design Like Any Other Design
Profession, Is An Interdependent Profession. Interior Designers Work In Conjunction With
Other Design Professionals, Who Need Interior Design Contribution In Their Work, Such As
Architects, Building Engineers, Landscape Designers , Furniture And Product Designers,
Exhibition And Event Managers. Interior Designers Also Use Expertise Of Other
Professionals For Their Work. These Include Environmental Engineers, Ecologists,
Furnishing Experts, Textile Designers, Painters, Sculptors, And An Array Of Crafts Persons.
Specialization In Interior Design : Interior Designers Like Other Professionals Also Face A
Dilemma, Should They Specialize Or Be A Generalist? To Become A Specialist One Needs To
Limit The Work To Projects Of Particular Nature. But It Is Very Difficult To Get Projects To
Suit A Predefined Field Of Specialization. In Reality, As And When Opportunities Arise, A
Designer Preferences Project That Builds Up The Specific Sphere Of Experience. The
Refined Capability Can Then Be Used For Handling Similar But Complex Jobs.

RESIDENTIAL INTERIOR DESIGN
RESIDENTIAL INTERIOR DESIGN
Interior design is a very important part of architecture. However , just as there
are multiple kind of buildings, there are multiple kind of design. In this we talk
about residential interior design and see how it is used to define interior
space.
Residential interior designer coordinates with the interior of homes, which
means that their job is very different than someone who designs something
bank or a commercial centre. Interior design is always a matter of balancing
aesthetic and function, so we need to consider the primary function of a
residence. It is a place where people live therefore, a residential designer
primary focus is creating a livable space.
This means that residential design need to be comfortable and useable. It is
where you relax, cook, and eat . It is where you entertain close friends or
small group of guest. You may have a home office for working.
Residential facilities are family housing and unaccompanied personnel
housing (dormitories). While the overall wear of finishes is reduced in family
housing units, they still contain areas fitting all three categories of use. Heavy-
use areas include entrance foyers, kitchens, bathrooms, stairwells, and
laundry areas. Corridors, hallways, dayrooms, family living and dining rooms
would be considered medium-use areas. Bedrooms would be light-use areas.
The interior designer need to ensure that the colour, lighting, furniture,
appliances, temperature and general layout to meet these needs .

SITE SELECTION
For Good Planning And Designing Of Buildings , The Site Selection Of The Building Is
The Most Important . The Following General Principles Should Be Kept In Mind
While Selecting A Site For A Building .
 The Purpose Of The Building And Extent Of Privacy Is Desired .
 The Site Should Be Located In Fully Developed Or Fast Developing Locality .
 The Site Should Be Located In Such A Way That Community Services Like Police
And Fire Protection , Clearing Of Waste And Street Cleaning , Utility Services
Like Water Supply , Electricity , Drainage Etc., Amenities Like Schools Facilities
And Means Of Transportation Are Also Available Within Short Distance .
 Before Selecting A Site , One Should Study The Bye-laws Of The Local Authority
.
 The Site Should Be Situated On An Elevated Place And Also Levelled With
Uniform Slopes From One End To The Other To Provide Good And Quick
Drainage Of Rain Water .
 The Legal And Financial Aspects Should Be Given Due Consideration .

ORIENTATION
WHAT IS BUILDING ORIENTATION ?
WHY CONSIDER BUILDING
ORIENTATION ?
HOW TO DESIGN FOR
BUILDING ORIENTATION ?
Design For Orientation Is A Fundamental
Step To Ensure That Buildings Work With
The Passage Of The Sun Across The Sky .
Knowledge Of Sun Paths For Any Site Is
Fundamental In Design . It Is Important To
Remember That The Position Of The Sun In
The Sky Is Dynamic, Changing According To
Time Of Day , Time Of Year And The Site’s
Altitude .
Well Oriented Building Maximize Day
Lighting Through Building Facades
Reducing The Need For Artificial Lighting .
Some Topologies Especially Housing Can Be
Zoned To Ensure Different Functional Uses
Receive Sunlight At Different Times Of The
Day . Building That Maximize Sunlight Are
Ideal For The Incorporation Of Passive Solar
Collection Techniques That Can Reduce
Carbon Use And Enhance User Comfort .
In the past the passage of the sun
across the sky was plotted with
pre printed sun path diagrams for
specific latitudes . Thankfully CAD
packages can do this for you .
Specifically Google SketchUp is
effective in setting up a model in
any global location and then able
to stimulate a sun path across a
building .

BIOCLIMATE DESIGN
Timeless Lessons Of Climate Responsive Design Are Evident In Indigenous And
Traditional Architecture Throughout The World. Bioclimatic Design Has Developed
Out Of A Sensitivity To Ecological And Regional Contexts And The Need To Conserve
Energy And Environmental Resources.
In Using The Term “Bioclimatic”, Architecture Design Is Linked To The Biological,
Physiological And Psychological Need For Health And Comfort. Bioclimatic
Approaches To Design Attempt To Create Comfort Conditions In Buildings By
Understanding The Microclimate And Resulting Design Strategies That Include
Natural Ventilation, Daylighting And Passive Heating And Cooling.
Bioclimatic Design Was Enlarged To Include Landscape, Water, And Waste Nutrient
Recovery. In These Approaches, Architecture And Environmental System Are
Conceived As An Integral Part Of Sustaining The Health And Ecology Of Building,
Site And Region.
PORTFoLiO
ReSidenTiAL DeSiGN
BIOCLIMATE DESIGN
Natural Ventilation Can Provide Comfort In All Seasons, Especially In Summer When
It Can Reduce Or Eliminate The Need For Air Conditioning In Some Climates. Costly
Mechanical (Refrigerant) Cooling Is Often Required Simply Because A Buildings
Unprotected Window Orientation Or Uninsulated Roofs Turn It Into A “Solar Oven”,
Collecting More Heat Than Is Needed Or Tolerable. The Effect Is Evident Inside Most
Any West-facing Glass Window Wall. Even When Temperatures And Local Breezes
Create Comfort Conditions Outside, Design That Ignores Its Climatic Context Will
Result In A Building That Is Both Uncomfortable And Wastes Energy. The
“Resources” Of Bioclimatic Design Are The Natural Flows Of Energy In And Around A
Building – Created By The Interaction Of Sun, Wind, Precipitation, Vegetation,
Temperature And Humidity In The Air And In The Ground .
PORTFoLiO
ReSidenTiAL DeSiGN
BIOCLIMATE STRATEGIES
BIOCLIMATIC DESIGN STRATEGIES :
In Winter, The Objectives Of Bioclimatic Design Are To Resist Loss Of Heat From The
Building Envelope And To Promote Gain Of Solar Heat. In Summer These Objectives
Are The Reserve, To Resist Solar Gain And To Promote Loss Of Heat From The
Building Interior. The Strategies Can Be Set Fourth As
MINIMIZE CONDUCTIVE HEAT FLOW – This Strategy Is Achieved By Using
Insulation. It Is Effective When Outdoor Temperature Is Different Than The Interior
Comfort Range. PROVIDE THERMAL STORAGE – Thermal Mass Inside The Insulated
Envelop Is Critical To Dampening Swing Air And In Storing Heat In Winter And Cool
In Summer.
Promote Solar Gain – The Sun Can Provide A Sustainable Portion Of Winter Heating
Energy. Such Elements Like Equatorial- Facing Window And Greenhouse And Other
Solar Techniques Which Utilize Space To Collect ,Store And Transfer Solar Heat.
Promote Ventilation - A Fan Can Be Used To Augment Natural Ventilation Cooling In
The Absence Of Sufficient Wind Or Stack-pressure Differential.
Minimize Infiltration- “Infiltration Refers To Uncontrolled Air Leakage Through
Joints, Crakes And Faulty Seals In Construction And Around Door And Windows.
Delay Periodic Heat Flow – While The Insulation Value Of Building Material Is Well
Understood It Is Not As Widely Appreciated That Building Envelope Materials Also
Can Delay Heat Flows That Can Be Used To Improve Comfort And To Lower Energy
Cost.

WHY DAYLIGHTING?
The Dynamic Nature Of Daylight, Throughout The Day And Throughout The Year,
Poses Numerous Challenges When Designing Buildings That Seek To Utilize This
Abundant Natural Resource To Meet The Illuminance Requirements Of Architectural
Spaces That Considers The Many Factors Involved In Good Daylighting Design.
• Daylight Availability On The Building Envelope Which Determines The Potential To
Daylight A Space;
• Physical And Geometrical Properties Of Window(s), And How Windows Are Used
To Exploit And Respond To Available Daylight;
• Physical And Geometrical Properties Of The Space.
DAYLIGHTING DESIGN GOALS
The Benefits Of Introducing Daylight Into A Space Can Be Negated By Improper
Handling Of The Daylight Being Introduced. Uncomfortable Glare And Thermal
Conditions, As Well As Veiling Reflections And High Contrast Ratios, Are Examples
Of Unfavorable Conditions That Can Be Created By Poor Daylighting. Therefore, It Is
Important To Implement A Thorough And Efficient Approach To Daylighting Design.
DAYLIGHTING
PORTFoLiO
ReSidenTiAL DeSiGN
For occupants, the most important planning aspects are health and comfort.
Excellent air quality is especially essential and can only be achieved if “used” air is
regularly replaced by fresh air. Opening windows twice a day is not enough .
Comfort ventilation based on the requirements for fresh air is therefore
indispensable in every Passive House. A regular, guaranteed and adequate
exchange of air in winter is only possible by means of comfort ventilation – this also
applies for ordinary new buildings. The issue here is not energy efficiency, but the
health of the building's occupants , Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) has a much higher
priority than energy conservation - but it turns out that there is no conflict at all, if
efficient components are used.
VENTILATION
PORTFoLiO
ReSidenTiAL DeSiGN
VENTILATION
STACK EFFECT
As air gets warmer it becomes less dense and so more buoyant. This means that
warm air has a tendency to rise.
This effect can be used to naturally ventilate buildings. Cooler outside air is drawn
into buildings at a lower level, it is warmed by sources of heat within the building
(such as people, equipment, heating and solar gain), and then rises through the
building to vent out at a higher level. A positive pressure area is created at the top
of a building and negative pressure area at the bottom. This process can take place
without mechanical assistance, simply by introducing openings at the bottom and
the top of buildings. It is known as the stack effect or stack ventilation.
Stack ventilation can be particularly effective as a means of naturally ventilating tall
buildings that include vertical spaces which rise throughout their height, for
example buildings with central atriums. This can be useful in deep buildings,
where cross ventilation may not be sufficient to penetrate to spaces in the heart of
the building.
The effectiveness of stack ventilation is influenced by:
 The effective area of openings.
 The height of the stack.
 The temperature difference between the bottom and the top of the stack.
 Pressure differences outside the building.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
1. Leader: Leader Means A Person Who Leads And Forms Any Group Of
Followers. While Doing Space Planning, Living Room Can Be Characterized As A
Leader.
2. Loner: Loner Is A Space Which Requires More Privacy Of Sight And Sound And
Avoids Social Interactions. This Characteristic Must Be In Master Bedroom, So
It Is Kept Isolated.
3. Servant: The Space That Serves Other Spaces In Someway That Needs To Be
Adjacent To Them But Prefer Not To Appeal Visually. Servant Is The Powder
Room, Which In Space Planning Must Be Situated Near The Kitchen, Living And
Dining And Must Not Be Seen.
4. Watcher: This Type Of Character Causes A Space To Locate Beside The
Boundary Of The Project For Attractions In The Environment. The Attractions
Can Be A Garden, A Water Body Etc.
5. Outreaching: The Space With This Character Is Located Near The Entrance Or
Corridor For Meeting. This Type Of Space Represents The Welcoming Space.
6. Worker: The Space That Often Supplies To Other Spaces Is Called As A Worker.
OPENING IN SPACES
OPENING WITHIN PLANES :
An Opening Can Be Located Wholly Within A Wall Or
Ceiling Plane Often Appears As A Bright Figure On A
Contrasting Field Or Background. I Centered Within
Planes , The Opening Will Appear Stable And Visually
Organize The Surface Around It. Moving The Opening
Off-center Will Create A Degree Of Visual Tension
Between The Opening And The Edges Of The Plane
Toward Which It Is Moved.
The Shape Of The Opening, If Similar To The Shape Of
The Plane In Which It Is Located, Will Create A
Redundant Compositional Pattern. The Shape Or
Orientation Of The Opening May Contrast With The
Enclosing Plane To Emphasize Its Individuality As A
Figure.
Multiple Opening May Be Clustered To Form A Unified
Composition Within A Plane, Or Be Staggered Or
Dispersed To Create Visual Movement Along The
Surface Of The Plane. As An Opening Within A Plane
Increases In Size. It Will At Some Point Cease To Be A
Figure Within An Enclosing Field And Become Instead
A Positive Element In Itself, A Transparent Plane
Bounded By A Heavy Frame . Opening Within Planes
Naturally Appear Brighten Than Their
Adjacent Surfaces.

OPENING AT CORNER :
Opening That Are Located At Corners Give A Space

May Be Established To Capture A Desirable View Or
Brighten A Dark Corner Of A Space.
A Corner Opening Visually Erodes The Edges Of The
Plane In Which It Is Located And Articulates The Edge
Of The Plane Adjacent And Perpendicular To It. The
Larger The Opening, The Weaker Will Be The
Definition Of The Corner. If The Opening Were To Turn
The Corner, The Angle Of The Space Would Be Implied
Rather Than Real And The Spatial Field Would Extend
Beyond Its Enclosing Planes. If Opening Introduced
Between The Enclosing Planes At All Four Corner Of A
Space, The Individuals Identity Of The Planes Will Be
Reinforced And Diagonal Or Pin Wheel Patterns Of
Space, Use And Movement Will Be Encouraged.
The Light That Enters A Space Through A Corner
Opening Washes The Surface Of The Plane Adjacent
And Perpendicular To The Opening. This Illuminated
Surface Itself Become A Source Of Light And Enhances
The Brightness Of The Space . The Level Of
Illumination Can Be Enhanced Further By Turning The
Corner With The Opening Or Adding A Skylight Above
The Opening .

OPENING IN SPACES
OPENING BETWEEN PLANES :
A Vertical Opening That Extends From The Floor
To The Ceiling Plane Of A Space Visually Separates
And Articulates The Edge Of The Adjacent Wall
Planes.
If Located At A Corner, The Vertical Opening Will
Erode The Definition Of The Space And Allow It To
Extend Beyond The Corner To The Adjacent Space.
It Will Also Allow Incoming Light To Wash The
Surface Of The Wall Plane Perpendicular To It And
Articulates The Primacy Of That Plane In The
Space. If Allowed To Turn The Corner, The Vertical
Opening Will Further Erode The Definition Of The
Space Allow It To Interlock With Adjacent Spaces
And Emphasize The Individuality Of The Enclosing
Planes.
A Horizontal Opening That Extends Across A Wall
Plane Separate It Into A Number Of Horizontal
Layers. If The Opening Is Not Very Deep. It Will
Not Erode The Integrity Of The Wall Planes. If,
However Its Depth Increases To The Point Where
It Is Greater Than The Bands Above And Below It,
Then The Opening Will Become A Positive
Element Bounded At Its Top And Bottom By Heavy
Frames .

Stairs : A stairs is defined as a sequence of steps and it is provided to afford the
means of ascent and descent between the floors or landing . The apartment or
room of a building , in which the stair is located , is known as staircase and the
opening or space occupied by the stair is known as stairway .
TYPES OF STAIRS :
 STRAIGHT STAIRS
 TURNING STAIRS
 QUARTER – TURN STAIRS
 HALF TURN STAIRS
 THREE QUARTER TURN
 CIRCULAR OR HELICAL OR SPIRAL STAIRS
 GEOMETRICAL STAIRS
ANTHROPOMETRY
Anthropometry, or anthropometrics, is the study of human body measurements. At
its most basic, anthropometrics is used to help scientists and anthropologists
understand physical variations among humans. Anthropometrics are useful for a
wide array of applications, providing a kind of baseline for human measurement.
Today, anthropometry plays an important role in industrial
design, clothing design, ergonomics and architecture where statistical data about
the distribution of body dimensions in the population are used to optimize
products. Changes in lifestyles, nutrition, and ethnic composition of populations
lead to changes in the distribution of body dimensions (e.g. the rise in obesity), and
require regular updating of anthropometric data collections.

ERGONOMICS
Ergonomics is the study of people's
efficiency in their working environment.
So ergonomic design seeks to create the
most efficient workplace while providing
comfort for the people within it.
For the purposes of ergonomic design,
anthropometrics offers information
about the average human build. This
gives chair makers data they can use
to devise more comfortable seating, for
example. Desk manufacturers can build
desks that don't force workers to hunch
in uncomfortable positions, and
keyboards can be designed to reduce the
likelihood of repetitive stress injuries like
carpal tunnel syndrome.
Ergonomic design extends beyond the
average cubicle; every car on the street
has been built to accommodate the
largest set of the population based on an
anthropometric range.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN
UNIVERSAL DESIGN
The Goal Of Universal Design Could Be Said Is Created Building ,Places And Details
That Provide A Supportive Environment Throughout Life’s Variety Of Changing
Circumstances. At Any Time In Our Lives , We May Experience Temporary Or
Permanent , Physical Or Psychological Impairments Which May Be Disabling And
Which May Increase Our Dependence Upon Certain Aspects Of The Physical
Environment . Universal Design Makes Designer, User And Building Owner More
Sensitive To What Can Be Done To Improve The Long Term Quality Of What We
Built.
Accessible Design Is A Design That Meets Standards That Allow People With
Disabilities To Enjoy A Minimum Level Of Access To Environments And Products .
SENSORY IMPAIRMENT : Design Of Information System
This Include Vision ,Hearing And Speech Impairment Including Total And Partial Loss
Of Function .
DENTERITY IMPAIRMENT : Design Of Operating Control And Hardware
This Include People With Limitation In The Use Of Their Hands And Fingers And
Suggest The “Closed Fist Rule”.
MOBILITY IMPAIRMENT : Space And Circulation Systems
This Includes People Who Use Walkers, Crutches, Canes And Wheelchair And Also
Have Difficulty Climbing Stairs.

CONCLUSION
As Interior Design Is Not Just About Designing A Space, But It Is About Creating A
Space As Per Human Needs And Wants. Interior Design Is Important Due To The
Aesthetic Value It Posses In A Given Space. The Simple Fact Is That Having A House
That Looks Nicer Is Going To Make You Like It Better And That Makes Design
Important.
During My One Year Tenure Of Residential Design Diploma Programme I Have
Come Across Many New Things And Have Learnt Many Things.
These Are The Topics That I Have Learnt :
 Elements Of Design
 Space Planning
 Principles Of Design
 Anthropometrics
 Ergonomics
 Building Bye Laws
 Louis Kahn Principles
My Residential Plan Features All The Above Points, These Helped Me In Improving
My Skills.

  • 2. Project Report On Residential Space Planning At Dezyne E’cole College Ajmer Submitted To Dezyne E’cole College Towards The Partial Fulfilment of 1 Year Residential Design Diploma NSQF Level 5 By Piyush Raj Singh Dezyne E’Cole College 106/10, Civil Lines, Ajmer Tel.: 0145 – 2624679 www.dezynecole.com 2016 – 2017 Today a Reader Tomorrow a Leader
  • 3. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I, Piyush Raj Singh , student of Dezyne E’Cole College, am extremely grateful to each and every individual who has contributed in successful completion of my project. I express my gratitude towards Dezyne E’Cole College for their guidance and constant supervision as well as for providing the necessary information and support regarding the completion of project. Thank You.
  • 4. GRADE SHEET This project report of Mr. Piyush Raj Singh, A Student of 1 year Residential Design diploma, NSQF Level 5 of NSDC, Has been checked and is graded as _________________ Thank You _________________ Principal (Seal & Sign)
  • 5. SYNOPSIS This Project Report On Residential Space Planning Has Been Created, Developed And Designed By Me, During My Study Of Residential Spaces Confirming To NSQF Level 5 Of NSDC. In This Project I Have Discussed How Residential Spaces Need To Be Devised As Per Climatology And Bio Climatic Design Of Rajasthan, Green Building Concepts, Using Orientation, Daylight, Ventilation And Landscaping Of Land. Through Landscaping I Learnt That The Micro Climate Can Be Lowered By 6- 8° On The Plot And This Has Been Inculcated In My Design Of Residential Plot. Further I Paid Attention To The Building Bye-laws Of The Plot And Than As Per The Study Of Spaces And How Planning Is Done As Per Louis Kahn Principles, I Devised The Plan Of The Residential Area; Using Concept Of Watcher For A Living Room, Attending To Served And Servant Areas. While Devising The Plan I Even Paid Attention On Different Types Of Approaches And Entrances To The House and Levelling Of Space. I Even Paid Attention In The Planning As To How Shapes Develops Into Forms And Forms Follows Functions. The Way Forms Are Clustered To Make A Cohesive Zone Of Space Planning. Finally I Studied About The Client And Created A Mood Board, Furniture Selections And Accessories Board And Designed The Space. All The Design Development Creation Of Orthographic Projection Has Been Done Using Google Sketch Up. I Request You To Kindly Go Through My Portfolio Pages. As A Novice In This Field I Have Tried My Level Best To Bring Out The Best Of My Knowledge Gained At Dezyne E’cole College.

  • 10. INTERIOR DESIGNING INTRODUCTION To Be Creative Is A Part Of Human Psyche. It Is One Of Those Traits That Set Us Apart From Other Animal Species And We Have Practiced It For Millennia. Even When Our Prime Need Was To Find Food And Shelter, We Felt A Desire To Leave Our Mark On The Environment That We Inhabited. Whether This Was To Satisfy Some Deep Spiritual Calling Or A Method Of Passing On A Vital Knowledge To Fellow Group Members, Or Whether It Was Simply A Way For An Individual To Satisfy An Urge To Leave His Mark For Future Generations, We Will Never Know. Today, These Primitive And Fundamental Indicators Of Human Nature May Be Expressed In More Sophisticated And Developed Ways, But The Primal Simplicity Of Our Human Desire To Make A “Better” And More Comfortable World For Ourselves Is Evidenced Through, Amongst Other Things., How We Organize The Space That We Inhabit, And The Aesthetic That We Make For Them. As We Have Become More Affluent And Blessed With More Leisure Time, Style Has Become More Important To Us And Is Something With Which We Want To Imbue Our Homes. But ‘Style’ Is A Very Personal Notion, So Why Should Anyone Look To Employ Someone Else, An Interior Designer, To Tell Them What Is Right? Why, For That Matter, Should We As A Designer Presume To Impose Our Ideas Upon A Space That Isn’t Our Own? The Answer Of This Interior Design Is All About So Much More Than ‘What Looks Right’. It Is About Taking Holistic View Of The Way That Individuals Use And Enjoy The Spaces That They Inhabit. It Is About Finding And Crating A Cohesive Answer To A Set Of Problems And Dressing The Solutions So As To Unify And Strengthen Our Experience Of The Space. And So There Is The Need For Professional Interior Designers. • 11. Good Interior Design Adds A New Dimension To A Space. It Can Increase Our Efficiency In The Way We Go About Our Daily Lives And It Adds Depth Understanding And Meaning Of The Built Environment. Thoughtful And Well- crafted Design Makes A Space Easier To Understand And Experiencing Such A Space Lifts The Spirit. It Is, Therefore, Not Just About Aesthetic, It Is A Practical And Philosophical Design. Beautiful Spaces Betray A Logical And Rational Questioning Of The Status Quo And Can Be An Honest Attempt To Find New And Exciting Way To Lead Our Lives. Planners Are Often Asked To Make Estimates Of Space Needs Before Having An Opportunity To Make Policies Or Detailed Plans For Operations. Here The Interior Designer Studies About The Space And Its Surrounding Influences On It , Like Orientation Of The Space ,Day Lighting, Ventilation, HVAC ,Lighting, Landscaping All Depending On The Personality Of The Space. These Then Lead To Development Of The Structural Features Of The Building As It Influences The Utilization Of The Space. Interior Decorators On The Other Hand Generally Work With Existing Spaces That Do Not Require Physical Alteration. Through The Use Of Color ,Light And Surface Finish , They Will Transform The Look Of The Space, Perhaps Making It Suitable To Function In A Different Way From That For Which It Was Originally Designed , But With Very Little Or No Change To The Structure Of The Building. An Interior Designer Will Completely Handle The Space Planning And Creation Of Decorative Scheme At The Same Time As Considering Major Structural Changes. Lets Understand The Work Of An Interior Designer. Interior Design As A Skill Branch : Building Engineering Was A Pioneer Design Field Out Of Which Many Specialties Like Architecture, Civil Engineering And Interior Designing Have Separated PORTFoLiO ReSidenTiAL DeSiGN INTERIOR DESIGNING
  • 12. INTERIOR DESIGNING Building And Design Interventions : A Building Once Constructed Is Initially Readied For Occupation By The Original Designer . However Buildings Last For Ages And During The Lifespan , Must Be Altered And Updated Several Times. Architects Or Building Engineers Are Unavailable , Or Have No Income Incentive For Such ‘Frivolity’. During Early Middle Ages Or Perhaps Even Earlier , Low-skilled ‘Art- painters’ Were Hired To Paint And Decorate Old Buildings Inside And Outside . The Painters Known As Decorators , Worked Along With Associates , To Not Only Paint But Undertake Repairs, Make Furniture And Update Furnishings. Many Crafts- persons Like , Iron-smiths, Guilders, Glass Blowers , Weavers, Embroiders, Rug And Carpet Makers, Sculptors, Mural Makers Were Associated With The Decorator As Jobbers And Suppliers . Later All These Services Were Handled By A Person , The Interior Decoration Was A Service For The Building But Always Was Distinct From The Architect From The Architecture Or Building Engineering. Interior Decorator Was Neither A Variant, Nor Subservient To The Architect. Interior Decorator To Interior Designer : Interior Decorator Worked As A Facilitator, Scheduling And Coordinating The Activities While Supervising The Quality Of Various Vendors. The Interior Decorator Now Even Offered Comprehensive Design Solutions With Alternative To Their Clients. Interior Decoration Became A Well- Documented Strategy, Serving Two Basic Purpose. It Helped Creation Of A Functional System By Coordinating Skills, Materials And Objects Sourced From Different Agencies. It Showed The User Of Client, In Advance, The Solution, In A Respective Form A Surrogate Once The First Objective Was Achieved Without Being Continuously Present On The Site It Was Possible For The Interior In Charge Person To Devote More Tome And Attention To The Second Objective. The Interior Decorator Began To Play A Very Active Role Of A Professional Interior Designer Rather Than Being Simply A Site Bound Interior Contractor. PORTFoLiO ReSidenTiAL DeSiGN
  • 13. INTERIOR DESIGNING Interior Design And Other Design Professions : Interior Design Like Any Other Design Profession, Is An Interdependent Profession. Interior Designers Work In Conjunction With Other Design Professionals, Who Need Interior Design Contribution In Their Work, Such As Architects, Building Engineers, Landscape Designers , Furniture And Product Designers, Exhibition And Event Managers. Interior Designers Also Use Expertise Of Other Professionals For Their Work. These Include Environmental Engineers, Ecologists, Furnishing Experts, Textile Designers, Painters, Sculptors, And An Array Of Crafts Persons. Specialization In Interior Design : Interior Designers Like Other Professionals Also Face A Dilemma, Should They Specialize Or Be A Generalist? To Become A Specialist One Needs To Limit The Work To Projects Of Particular Nature. But It Is Very Difficult To Get Projects To Suit A Predefined Field Of Specialization. In Reality, As And When Opportunities Arise, A Designer Preferences Project That Builds Up The Specific Sphere Of Experience. The Refined Capability Can Then Be Used For Handling Similar But Complex Jobs. PORTFoLiO ReSidenTiAL DeSiGN
  • 16. RESIDENTIAL INTERIOR DESIGN Interior design is a very important part of architecture. However , just as there are multiple kind of buildings, there are multiple kind of design. In this we talk about residential interior design and see how it is used to define interior space. Residential interior designer coordinates with the interior of homes, which means that their job is very different than someone who designs something bank or a commercial centre. Interior design is always a matter of balancing aesthetic and function, so we need to consider the primary function of a residence. It is a place where people live therefore, a residential designer primary focus is creating a livable space. This means that residential design need to be comfortable and useable. It is where you relax, cook, and eat . It is where you entertain close friends or small group of guest. You may have a home office for working. Residential facilities are family housing and unaccompanied personnel housing (dormitories). While the overall wear of finishes is reduced in family housing units, they still contain areas fitting all three categories of use. Heavy- use areas include entrance foyers, kitchens, bathrooms, stairwells, and laundry areas. Corridors, hallways, dayrooms, family living and dining rooms would be considered medium-use areas. Bedrooms would be light-use areas. The interior designer need to ensure that the colour, lighting, furniture, appliances, temperature and general layout to meet these needs . Design For Orientation Is A Fundamental Step To Ensure That Buildings Work With The Passage Of The Sun Across The Sky . Knowledge Of Sun Paths For Any Site Is Fundamental In Design . It Is Important To Remember That The Position Of The Sun In The Sky Is Dynamic, Changing According To Time Of Day , Time Of Year And The Site’s Altitude . Well Oriented Building Maximize Day Lighting Through Building Facades Reducing The Need For Artificial Lighting . Some Topologies Especially Housing Can Be Zoned To Ensure Different Functional Uses Receive Sunlight At Different Times Of The Day . Building That Maximize Sunlight Are Ideal For The Incorporation Of Passive Solar Collection Techniques That Can Reduce Carbon Use And Enhance User Comfort . In the past the passage of the sun across the sky was plotted with pre printed sun path diagrams for specific latitudes . Thankfully CAD packages can do this for you . Bioclimatic Design Has Developed Out Of A Sensitivity To Ecological And Regional Contexts And The Need To Conserve Energy And Environmental Resources. In Using The Term “Bioclimatic”, Architecture Design Is Linked To The Biological, Physiological And Psychological Need For Health And Comfort. Bioclimatic Approaches To Design Attempt To Create Comfort Conditions In Buildings By Understanding The Microclimate And Resulting Design Strategies That Include Natural Ventilation, Daylighting And Passive Heating And Cooling. Bioclimatic Design Was Enlarged To Include Landscape, Water, And Waste Nutrient Recovery. • 32. BIOCLIMATE DESIGN Natural Ventilation Can Provide Comfort In All Seasons, Especially In Summer When It Can Reduce Or Eliminate The Need For Air Conditioning In Some Climates. Costly Mechanical (Refrigerant) Cooling Is Often Required Simply Because A Buildings Unprotected Window Orientation Or Uninsulated Roofs Turn It Into A “Solar Oven”, Collecting More Heat Than Is Needed Or Tolerable. The Effect Is Evident Inside Most Any West-facing Glass Window Wall. Even When Temperatures And Local Breezes Create Comfort Conditions Outside, Design That Ignores Its Climatic Context Will Result In A Building That Is Both Uncomfortable And Wastes Energy. The “Resources” Of Bioclimatic Design Are The Natural Flows Of Energy In And Around A Building – Created By The Interaction Of Sun, Wind, Precipitation, Vegetation, Temperature And Humidity In The Air And In The Ground . PORTFoLiO ReSidenTiAL DeSiGN
  • 33. BIOCLIMATE STRATEGIES BIOCLIMATIC DESIGN STRATEGIES : In Winter, The Objectives Of Bioclimatic Design Are To Resist Loss Of Heat From The Building Envelope And To Promote Gain Of Solar Heat. In Summer These Objectives Are The Reserve, To Resist Solar Gain And To Promote Loss Of Heat From The Building Interior. The Strategies Can Be Set Fourth As MINIMIZE CONDUCTIVE HEAT FLOW – This Strategy Is Achieved By Using Insulation. It Is Effective When Outdoor Temperature Is Different Than The Interior Comfort Range. PROVIDE THERMAL STORAGE – Thermal Mass Inside The Insulated Envelop Is Critical To Dampening Swing Air And In Storing Heat In Winter And Cool In Summer. Promote Solar Gain – The Sun Can Provide A Sustainable Portion Of Winter Heating Energy. Such Elements Like Equatorial- Facing Window And Greenhouse And Other Solar Techniques Which Utilize Space To Collect ,Store And Transfer Solar Heat. Promote Ventilation - A Fan Can Be Used To Augment Natural Ventilation Cooling In The Absence Of Sufficient Wind Or Stack-pressure Differential. Minimize Infiltration- “Infiltration Refers To Uncontrolled Air Leakage Through Joints, Crakes And Faulty Seals In Construction And Around Door And Windows. Delay Periodic Heat Flow – While The Insulation Value Of Building Material Is Well Understood It Is Not As Widely Appreciated That Building Envelope Materials Also Can Delay Heat Flows That Can Be Used To Improve Comfort And To Lower Energy Cost. • 34. WHY DAYLIGHTING? The Dynamic Nature Of Daylight, Throughout The Day And Throughout The Year, Poses Numerous Challenges When Designing Buildings That Seek To Utilize This Abundant Natural Resource To Meet The Illuminance Requirements Of Architectural Spaces That Considers The Many Factors Involved In Good Daylighting Design. • Daylight Availability On The Building Envelope Which Determines The Potential To Daylight A Space; • Physical And Geometrical Properties Of Window(s), And How Windows Are Used To Exploit And Respond To Available Daylight; • Physical And Geometrical Properties Of The Space. DAYLIGHTING DESIGN GOALS The Benefits Of Introducing Daylight Into A Space Can Be Negated By Improper Handling Of The Daylight Being Introduced. Uncomfortable Glare And Thermal Conditions, As Well As Veiling Reflections And High Contrast Ratios, Are Examples Of Unfavorable Conditions That Can Be Created By Poor Daylighting. Therefore, It Is Important To Implement A Thorough And Efficient Approach To Daylighting Design. DAYLIGHTING PORTFoLiO ReSidenTiAL DeSiGN
  • 35. For occupants, the most important planning aspects are health and comfort. Excellent air quality is especially essential and can only be achieved if “used” air is regularly replaced by fresh air. Opening windows twice a day is not enough . Comfort ventilation based on the requirements for fresh air is therefore indispensable in every Passive House. A regular, guaranteed and adequate exchange of air in winter is only possible by means of comfort ventilation – this also applies for ordinary new buildings. The issue here is not energy efficiency, but the health of the building's occupants , Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) has a much higher priority than energy conservation - but it turns out that there is no conflict at all, if efficient components are used. VENTILATION PORTFoLiO ReSidenTiAL DeSiGN
  • 36. VENTILATION STACK EFFECT As air gets warmer it becomes less dense and so more buoyant. This means that warm air has a tendency to rise. This effect can be used to naturally ventilate buildings. Cooler outside air is drawn into buildings at a lower level, it is warmed by sources of heat within the building (such as people, equipment, heating and solar gain), and then rises through the building to vent out at a higher level. A positive pressure area is created at the top of a building and negative pressure area at the bottom. This process can take place without mechanical assistance, simply by introducing openings at the bottom and the top of buildings. It is known as the stack effect or stack ventilation. Stack ventilation can be particularly effective as a means of naturally ventilating tall buildings that include vertical spaces which rise throughout their height, for example buildings with central atriums. This can be useful in deep buildings, where cross ventilation may not be sufficient to penetrate to spaces in the heart of the building. The effectiveness of stack ventilation is influenced by:  The effective area of openings.  The height of the stack.  The temperature difference between the bottom and the top of the stack.  Pressure differences outside the building. The Shape Of The Opening, If Similar To The Shape Of The Plane In Which It Is Located, Will Create A Redundant Compositional Pattern. The Shape Or Orientation Of The Opening May Contrast With The Enclosing Plane To Emphasize Its Individuality As A Figure. Multiple Opening May Be Clustered To Form A Unified Composition Within A Plane, Or Be Staggered Or Dispersed To Create Visual Movement Along The Surface Of The Plane. A Corner Opening Visually Erodes The Edges Of The Plane In Which It Is Located And Articulates The Edge Of The Plane Adjacent And Perpendicular To It. The Larger The Opening, The Weaker Will Be The Definition Of The Corner. If The Opening Were To Turn The Corner, The Angle Of The Space Would Be Implied Rather Than Real And The Spatial Field Would Extend Beyond Its Enclosing Planes. If Opening Introduced Between The Enclosing Planes At All Four Corner Of A Space, The Individuals Identity Of The Planes Will Be Reinforced And Diagonal Or Pin Wheel Patterns Of Space, Use And Movement Will Be Encouraged. The Light That Enters A Space Through A Corner Opening Washes The Surface Of The Plane Adjacent And Perpendicular To The Opening. Anthropometrics are useful for a wide array of applications, providing a kind of baseline for human measurement. Today, anthropometry plays an important role in industrial design, clothing design, ergonomics and architecture where statistical data about the distribution of body dimensions in the population are used to optimize products. Changes in lifestyles, nutrition, and ethnic composition of populations lead to changes in the distribution of body dimensions (e.g. the rise in obesity), and require regular updating of anthropometric data collections. For the purposes of ergonomic design, anthropometrics offers information about the average human build. This gives chair makers data they can use to devise more comfortable seating, for example. Desk manufacturers can build desks that don't force workers to hunch in uncomfortable positions, and keyboards can be designed to reduce the likelihood of repetitive stress injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome. Ergonomic design extends beyond the average cubicle; every car on the street has been built to accommodate the largest set of the population based on an anthropometric range.
