2. Introduction
The agricultural sector is highly dependent on the availability and quality of seeds for a
productive harvest.
The global seeds market was valued at USD 59.71 billion in 2018,
In 2018, the Indian seeds market reached a value of US$ 4.1 Billion, registering a
CAGR(Compound annual growth rate) of 15.7% during 2011- 2018 and It is further
expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.6% during 2019-2024, reaching a value of US$ 9.1
Billion by 2024.(Indian Council Of Food And Agriculture)
 India is among the top ten countries cultivating GM crops, with insect-resistant Bt cotton
covering a land area of 11.4 million hectares in 2017.
Twenty-six index companies report having a presence in India. Eight companies have
their headquarters in the country. Private agribusiness companies invest heavily in R&D
and technological innovation, which is evident from the extensive company activity in the
country.
 Twenty-two companies that carry out seed production in the country, more than half
involve mainly smallholder farmers in such activities.
