Kanthapura
 Kanthapura is the novel by Raja Rao.
 1st published in London, 1938 and was written when
Rao was in France : “I wrote Kanthapura in a thirteenth
century castle in the FrenchAlps belonging to the
Dauphins of France & I slept and worked on the novel in
the room of the Queen.”
 First major Indian Novel in English.
 The story of a South Indian village named “
Kanthapura”.
 The novel is narrated in the form of a Sthala – Purana
by an old woman of the village – ACHAKKA.

 LAGAAN a popular Bollywood movie , produced & star
by Amir Khan.
 Directed byAshish Gowarikar.
 Won the audience Award at the 2001.
 Narrative style of movie is very much linear OR very
much Indian style of narrative.
 The defeat of British Colonial rules at the hands of
Indians, but situates the struggle for decolonization on
apparently mutually Exclusive domains – Cricket, an ‘
Elite sport’ and Subaltern politics.
