Introduction

This guide provides an overview of Glow video streaming and its potential use in
learning and teaching. The tutorials contain step-by-step instructions on setting
up Glow video streaming and exploring its functionality.

Glow is web-based and can be used wherever users have access to an internet
connection.

Prerequisites for this guide

Prior to using this booklet users should have completed the Glow Portal Training
Guide.

To complete any of the tasks in this guide the user must be logged on with rights
to access the Video Streaming Management web part. These rights are set by the
Glow Accounts and Services Manager (ASM) for your school or establishment – if
you have any queries regarding the permissions that have been set for you,
please check with your ASM.

All the screen shots in this booklet are based on Firefox 2.0.0.6 and Glow theme
6.

What is Glow video streaming?

Video streaming is the process of providing video content or data via a web page.
Glow video streaming will allow authorised users to manage video resources using
a secure web-based interface from any location that has access to the Internet.
Glow will allow users to search video content in the portal and Glow Learn, upload
video content and tag the video content to include a title, subject, description,
target audience and, where applicable, the appropriate objective within the
Scottish Curriculum framework.



Why use Glow video streaming?

Research shows that people take in more information when it is presented
visually compared with text and voice alone. Glow video streaming can enhance
and support learning and teaching in a variety of educational situations. For
example:

• Moving images add authenticity and reality to the learning context, and can
bring the course content alive

• Helping learners to visualize a process or see how something works, moves
or performs

• Combining video with other interactive elements such as communication tools
can create rich learning environments

• Learners can replay videos in their own time and at their own speed
encouraging anywhere, anytime learning

• Illustrating how theories / techniques can be applied in real life

• Videos can be paused, rewound and replayed

• Streaming will allow for a larger target audience e.g. Glow Group

• Pupils can watch clips of lessons they may have missed (e.g. experiments)

Video streaming in use

Video streaming is being used to support Modern Languages teaching in
secondary schools. One secondary school has created a series of interactive
French video quizzes. Pupils scripted and filmed their French assistant delivering
various quizzes covering key topics in the syllabus. Teachers and pupils were able
to stream the videos during lessons. The videos added value to French lessons as
seeing the speaker provided a better focus of attention than a simple audio file,
being able to pause and replay parts of the video offered greater flexibility for
pupils and the quiz element, being truly interactive gives instant feedback. The
school has since gone on to develop video quizzes in both Italian and Spanish.

In another local authority, all the science experiments required for S-Grade are
available online, allowing pupils and teachers the opportunity to replay
experiments either as part of revision or to generate discussion in the class.



Tutorial 1 – Getting started

The purpose of this tutorial is to demonstrate how to log on to Glow. In this
tutorial you will:

• Log on to Glow

• Change the theme

Logging on to Glow
1. Open your web browser and in the address bar enter the Glow web address:
https://portal.glowscotland.org.uk. The Glow logon screen will appear.

2. Enter your username and password into the appropriate boxes.

3. Click on the arrow icon or press the Enter key to log in.

4. If this is the first time that you have logged into Glow, a list of terms and
conditions will be displayed. Once you have read the terms click on Accept, if
you wish to continue. Your Staff home page will open.

• The screenshots in this guide use Glow theme 6. If you wish to change
your Glow theme (the ‘look and feel’) to match, then:

• Scroll down the home page until you can see Glow settings

• Click on Change Theme

• From the drop-down menu select Theme 6

• Click on Apply.



Tutorial 2 – Setting up video streaming

The purpose of this tutorial is to demonstrate how to add the Video Streaming
Management web part your own My Glow site. In this tutorial you will:

• Add the Video Streaming Management web part to your own My Glow site.

The Video Streaming Management web part allows you to play and edit video
clips. The web part must be dropped on to your personal site. If you drop the web
part onto the wrong site within the portal, an error message displays.

Adding the Video Streaming Management web part
1. Log on to Glow.

2. In the left-hand navigation bar click on My Glow.

4. A menu will appear at the right hand side of the
window. In the ‘Add Web Parts’ section click on
Browse.

Glow will switch to the design page view. This allows you to move web parts
around and add additional web parts from the web part galleries onto the
page.

5. Select the Virtual Server Gallery.

6. Click on Next until you find the Video Streaming
Management web part.

(i) Select the ‘Video Streaming Management’
web part.

(ii) Select the page area where you want to
place the web part.

(iii) Click on Add.



7. Close the ‘Add Web Parts’ menu.

Uploading content
Video clips should be transferred onto the video streaming server using a secure
FTP application. These are not provided within Glow and must be installed and set
up before the uploading of content can take place.

The following video formats are compatible with the Video Streaming service:

• Real Media - not DRM

• Windows Media - can be DRM (encrypted, accessed via licensed server)

• Apple QuickTime® - can be DRM (encrypted, accessed via licensed server)

Some suitable Windows FTP clients are:

• CuteFTP®

• CoreFTP Lite

• FileZilla - Open Source

A suitable FTP client for MacOs is FileZilla - Open Source.

The screen shot used in this guide is from the ftp client FileZilla version 3.01.
Different ftp clients may have a different ‘look and feel’ but they all tend to
operate using similar principles.



To set up the client you should refer to the help for whichever client you choose.

1. Launch the ftp client.

2. The ftp client FileZilla uses a site manager to manage connections.

3. The connection needs to be configured to allow the transfer of files to take
place. Glow supports the transfer of files using the TLS protocol which in
simple terms is a secure method of communication between computers over
a network. The configuration settings required are:

• Host address/url/name: vsftp1.glowscotland.org.uk

• Username/password: Glow username and password

• Servertype or protocol option(s): FTP with TLS/SSL (Auth TLS -
Explicit) This is the preferred type; FTP with SSL (Auth SSL - Explicit);
FTP with Implicit SSL (on port 990)

• Data connection type: Both Active (PORT) and Passive (PASV) are
supported.

4. Click on Connect.

5. FileZilla supports the drag and drop of files. Once a connection has been
made to the video streaming server, simply drag the video clip from your
computer over onto the video streaming server. See the help section for your
relevant ftp client on how to transfer files.



Tutorial 3 – Exploring video streaming

The purpose of this tutorial is to demonstrate how you can use the Video clips list
page to access the actions available for a specific video clip.

In this tutorial you will:

• Identify how to play, edit properties and delete video clips.

For any specific video clip, you can:

• View it: There must be an appropriate client installed to play the clip
(Windows Media Player, RealPlayer or QuickTime Player).

• Edit properties: This includes changing the audience of the clip (e.g. making
it available to the general public) and changing the associated Learning
Outcomes which tie it into the curriculum.

• Delete it: Remove unwanted content.

Viewing a video clip
1. In the Video Streaming Management web part, click View video clips list.

2. Your Video clips list page displays.

The headings in this table are:

• Video Clip Title: The title for the video clip. This information is made
available to enable users to carry out a search within the portal, or Glow



Learn. By default it will contain the file type and upload details. Click on
the title to play the clip.

• File Type: See earlier for supported file types.

• Access Type: This can be one of:

— Public: the video clip can be viewed by all users, including the
general public.

— Protected: the video clip can be viewed only by portal users in the
Group(s) specified.

• Size (MB): The space taken up by the video clip.

• Length (secs): The time required to view the video clip.

3. You can now Play, Edit or Delete a selected video clip from the list by clicking
the appropriate link.

4. When you have finished using the Video clips list, click Back to return to the
Video Streaming Management web part.

Editing video clip information
When a video clip is uploaded, it has information associated with it required for
identification and searching purposes. You can change or add to this information.

To edit the information for a video clip
1. From the Video Streaming Management web part, click View video clips
list. The Video clips list page displays.



2. Click Edit for the appropriate video clip.

3. The Edit Video Clip information page displays for the selected video clip.

The Edit Video Clip information page provides the following details, which are
available to edit:

• Video Clip Title: This is a mandatory field and provides information
which can be used to find the video clip in a search using the search
facilities within the portal, and Glow Learn.

• Description: Provides additional information on the content of the video
clip.

• Subject: You can select from the drop-down menu, or add a new subject
category. Any new subject category you add will be added into the drop-
down menu list for use later.



• Target Audience: You can select from the drop-down menu, or add a
new audience category. Any new audience category you add will be
added into the drop-down menu list for use later.

• Length (secs): This is a mandatory field, and is the time required to
view the video clip. Usually, this value is taken from the video upload
software.

• Access Type: To choose the viewing audience for your video clip, select
the appropriate radio button. This can be one of:

— Public: The video clip can be viewed by all users, including the
general public, provided they have been given the appropriate URL.

— Protected: The video clip can be viewed by only portal users in the
Group(s) specified.

If you select Protected, the Select/Remove Groups function will become
available. Choose the appropriate establishment from the drop-down menu,
and then make your Group selection(s) as follows:

• Select groups: To add or remove specific groups of portal users, do the
following:

— To add a Group, select an entry from the Available Groups list and
click Select Group. Your selection displays in the Selected Groups
list.

— To remove a Group, select an entry from the Selected Groups list
and click Remove Group. Your selection will be removed from the
Selected Groups list.

• Add Learning Outcomes: tags video clips to the curriculum using the
specified Learning Outcomes.

To edit the associated Learning Outcomes, do the following:

— To add a Learning Outcome, expand the list of folders by clicking on
the + until the appropriate Learning Outcome displays. To make your
choice, select the specific checkbox(es) and click Add Outcomes.
The screen refreshes and your selections display.

— To remove a Learning Outcome, click the Remove link alongside the
appropriate outcomes. The screen refreshes and your selections no
longer display under access type.



4. When you have finished using the Edit Video Clip information page:

• To finalise your changes, click Save and Close to return to the Video
clips list page.

• Alternatively, to leave this page without making any changes, click
Cancel to return to the Video clips list page.

5. To return to the Video Streaming Management web part, click Back.

Deleting a video clip
1. In the Video Streaming Management web part, click View video clips list.
The Video clips list page displays.

2. To select a video clip to delete, click on the appropriate Delete link.

3. The ‘Delete a video clip’ page displays the selected video clip:

Click on URL
to play clip

4. On the ‘Delete a video clip’ page, carefully check the details to ensure that
you removing the correct video clip. As a further safeguard, you can check
the video clip, by clicking on the clip URL.



5. When you are sure this is the correct video clip to delete, click in the
checkbox, and click Delete this Video Clip.

6. Alternatively, to leave this page without deleting the video clip, click Cancel
to return to the ‘Video clips list’ page.



Tutorial 4 – Using video streaming with pupils

Pupils can be given the same access to the Video Streaming Management web
part as other users.

A user does not need to have the Video Streaming Management web part in order
to view uploaded video clips. They will be able to view it when supplied with the
clip URL, if they have the appropriate permissions and client. The URL could be
published in various locations within Glow such as Glow Groups.

The clip URL can also be made available through Glow Learn and outside Glow if
public access has been selected for the clip.

The Accounts and Services Manager (ASM) is able to view, edit and delete all
video clips uploaded and available to every user. For more information on the role
of ASM please refer to the Accounts and Services Management Training Guide.

streaming, one of the fundamental elements of Glow. You are now able to:

• Add the video streaming web part

• Set up an FTP client

• Upload video clips
