Barriers to Menâs Full Participation in
the Field
Did you know?
In Canada, 83 989 children between the ages
of 0-14 years old live with a single parent
("Early childhood education," 2004).
In Ontario there are "486,470 single female
mothers with children and 118, 175 single
male caregivers" ("Early childhood
education," 2004). This shows that there are
many children without male figures in their
daily lives.

2. More men working in childcare will
help counteract the view that childcare
is only âwomenâs work'.
In the same way that it is important
for children to have positive female
role models, it is surely equally
important to have positive male role
models.
Children benefit because of a male
perspective.
A more gender balanced staff group
gives different ways of looking at
issues.
Fathers could benefit because they
have someone to relate to.
Early childhood educators:
have knowledge about child
development and are able to use
developmentally appropriate
practices.
create nurturing and secure
environments for children.
help children succeed in both social
and academic studies.
work with parents and the
community to best support the child.
document the childâs process of
learning and share that with the
parents and community.
care about the childâs well-being by
practicing hygiene and proper
nutrition.
