In the digital age of contemporary society, the importance and role of Social Media is increasing in a phenomenal manner. The global reach of social media is ever expanding with the increasing internet access across the globe. Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn have become a part of daily discussions and activities. The use of social media among students has increased tremendously as social media sites are accessible through not only computers but also on mobile phones. It is important to learn about various social media tools and resources available in different subject areas. Students can use these resources for their academic work. A conference on Social Media will offer an opportunity to students-participants to the debates surrounding media technology, society and lifelong learning. There have been many forays into the world of social media for attempting to ensure healthy lifestyles, health monitoring, and messages of mental health and de-stigmatization of psychological disturbance. Reaching out to the elderly will become all the more possible with greater awareness of the power of Social Media and acceptance of these pathways by people of all ages. Tools of Social Media can work also as spokespersons to ensure safety of women and can cut across silences bred by gender constraints. In some cases the space provided by the platforms of social media has helped minorities to fight stigmatization and discrimination encountered by them in mainstream media discourses albeit after security check of the information provided. In the world of business Social Media has helped business to increase their worthiness, cultivate strategic partnership and increases their contact with customers and suppliers. Different platforms of Social Media play an important role of communications technologies in connecting people across multiple boundaries thus expanding human relationships. In the globalised era of 21st century, the traditional barriers of ‘national’ culture are breaking to give way to a new ‘global culture’ that has influences of cultures that are much beyond the narrow territorial boundaries of nation states. Social media is playing a prominent role in not only acquainting its users of the cultural developments of other societies, but also indirectly influencing the people's culture by introducing these external influences.
