In NIT Calicut there is an increasing need to meet growing water demands. There are about 5000 students in the college. There are fourteen departments and thirteen hostels in the campus. A lot of water is being misused both in the academic and residential campus which can be effectively managed and conserved.
3. INTRODUCTION
Today, only 2.5 per cent of the entire world’s water is
fresh, which is fit for human consumption, agriculture
and industry. In several parts of the world, however,
water is being used at a much faster rate than can
be refilled by rainfall. As water is becoming more
scarce , the importance of how it is managed grows
vastly.Kerala faces severe water scarcity between
February and mid May every year. During summer,
there are drinking water shortages. During this
period drinking water and other water purposes
become unavailable. This is expected in the coming
years.

growing water demands. There are about 5000
students in the college. There are fourteen
departments and thirteen hostels in the campus. A lot
of water is being misused both in the academic and
residential campus which can be effectively managed
and conserved. The quality of drinking water provided
to the people is not properly analyzed, which may
lead to health issues. If this is not dealt earlier with
proper care, then this problem will become a major
hurdle in the development phase of campus and the
standard of living will be declining.
7. METHODOLOGY
“Water management in NITC“ involves opinions
gathered from within the campus and an analysis of
the surveys conducted . Professors at the
Department of Environmental Engineering gave data
about water pollution and prevention. We were
informed about the various types of water pollution
in NITC campus. This include Septage tank
contamination and red sand contamination

8. Septage tank contamination and red sand
contamination were explained to us. We were
made aware of the fact that the water supplied to
the NITC campus is tested at the Environmental
Engineering laboratory. It was explained to us
about how to recharge ground water using rain
water harvesting techniques.
Two surveys were conducted in the hostels so
as to analyze the water consumption pattern
among the inmates. The surveys included two
sessions- one to understand the total water
usage and another one exclusively to
understand the drinking water consumption
9. Students were asked about their bathing habits
and drinking pattern . We visited the NITC Water
Treatment Plant so as to study the processes
involved and the authenticity of the treatment
plant. Since the topic was based on NITC, much
information had to be collected from within the
campus than from books and websites. Only very
little information is inserted from such sources.
The internet was used to find modern trends in
water management and conservation. Journals
and publications regarding waste water treatment
was also analyzed to prepare the report.
19. CONCLUSION
At NITC the most suitable is the rainwater harvesting
techniques due to the large availability of discarded
land, rooftops and high
More water is used for bathing purposes than required
and less for drinking.
There has been a decline in the drinking water
consumption for the inmates after they have moved into
the hostel.
Most students approach filtered water due to its easy
availability.
Total water consumption pattern is highly varying and
the amount of consumption is very high. There is no
considerable difference in the consumption pattern of
boys and girls.
20. Most departments at NITC dump their waste into their
backyards. The chemical department buries the
chemicals and the students do their part by spilling
excess chemicals into the wash basins.
Water Treatment Plant of NITC is an inspiring
emblem of water management in NITC. Through
scientific processes of sedimentation, bleaching,
several filtering processes and testing, it ensures that
pure water gets supplied to the NITC campus.
21. WHAT CAN
I DO
Close the tap after use
Self awareness
Use budget amount of water
Check for leaks and correct it
(at least report!!)
