«Welcome to Ukraine»
Ukraine is situated in the central part of Eastern Europe, on the crossroads of major
transportation routes from Europe to Asia and from the Scandinavian states to the
Mediterranean region. It is the largest country in the area of those whose territory is entirely
located in Europe.
Ukraine has numerous historical and architectural monuments, ancient castles and
fortresses, open-air museums, wonderful Carpathian and Crimean mountains, the Black and
Azov seas. All these interesting spots to visit in Ukraine guarantee unforgettable travel
experience. Every year, millions of travelers arrive in Ukraine, mainly from Europe and from
the USA, Canada, Australia, Latin America, the Middle East and the Far East. A constant
stream of tourists puts the country in the list of some of the most visited countries.
Kyiv is the historical capital of Kyivan Rus and modern Ukraine and is situated in the
heart of the country. The city stretches across both banks of the Dnipro river. Kyiv is an
authentic jewel of the architectural heritage of Ukraine. Here the buildings have been
preserved since the eleventh century. Saint Sophia Cathedral is an architectural monument
and the monumental painting of the 11th-18th centuries, one of the few buildings of the
times of Kyivan Rus that have been preserved. 250 square meters of mosaics and 3,000
meters of frescos have been preserved for ages. The ensemble of the St. Sophia Monastery is
included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Golden Gate is the main gate of ancient Kyiv. The remains of the walls of the gate
have been preserved to this day. Now the museum is located here. The Mariinsky Palace in
Kyiv was erected in the middle of the eighteenth century. This is a masterpiece of baroque
architecture. The interior of each palace building has a unique look. Now in this historic
building, various solemn state events take place.
In the southwest of Ukraine, there are the Carpathian Mountains. This is a perfect
place for mountain recreation. The Carpathian region is rich in numerous museums and
markets of folk art. The most famous center for mountain recreation is the town of Yaremche.
Excellent mountainous climate and authenticity constantly attract tourists. Tens of thousands
of travelers each year submit to the highest peak of Ukraine, Hoverla. Lovers of skiing in
winter in the Carpathians enjoy Dragobrat, Bukovel, Slavske resorts.
The cultural heart of Ukraine is the city of Lviv, located in the west of the country. The
founding of the city dates back to the middle of the thirteenth century. Named afted Lev, the
eldest son of Daniel, The King of Ruthenia, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Galicia–
Volhynia from 1272 to 1349. Today, the city can boast of numerous architectural
monuments, museums, galleries and parks. In order to appreciate the beauty of Lviv, we
recommend walking around the city center. The historic center of the city of Lev is included
into the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Not the main pride of Lviv is its Opera House. Lviv opera is considered one of the
most beautiful theaters in Europe. The well-known chapel of Boim was built in the early
2. seventeenth century. It combines the styles of the mature Renaissance and the Baroque. The
facades of the chapel are decorated with frescoes and decorative elements. The decoration of
the city is the Shevchenkivsky grove. It is a museum of folk architecture and everyday life. In
over 60 hectares, you will find more than hundred monuments of folk architecture.
Ukraine can also be called the country of ancient castles and fortresses. From
Kamyanets-Podilsky, Pidhirtsi, Olesko and Zolochiv castles it's clearly seen. Beautiful
architecture is combined with scenic landscapes. Olesko castle is an outstanding 14th century
architectural monument. For its long history, it was a fortress, and a lush palace. Now, here is
a castle museum open to all visitors.
What is the most attractive in Ukraine? Here is an advantageous geographical location,
remarkable climatic conditions and original national colourfulness. In Ukraine, there are 150
thousand monuments of culture, architecture and archeology, reflecting the history of the
country. There are numerous festivals and artistic events that give the tourists the
opportunity to learn a lot about Ukrainian customs, traditions and culture of the people.
