Sales in Americas to grow 37.0% in next five years
Airport retail sales through the Americas will grow by 37.0% over the next five years, with
passenger numbers increasing by 15.1% and spend per passenger rising from $6.51 in
2014 to $7.83 in 2019. Meanwhile, turnover in the Middle East and Africa region will rise by
59.6% in the period, with passenger numbers rising by 32.6% and spend per passenger
increasing by $0.68 to $7.43 in the Middle East and $1.84 to $7.84 in Africa.

Recent key events
Dubai sees World Expo 2020 win
In November 2013 it was announced at the 154th BIE General Assembly in Paris that
Dubai will host the 2020 World Expo, beating rivals Ekaterinburg in Russia and Izmir in
Turkey. The event will be held in Dubai under the theme ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the
Future’ and will be the first World Expo for the Middle East. As well as a big influx of visitors
through Dubai’s two airports for the event, the win also means new interest in the city,
which should also help to boost footfall in its airports.
Al Maktoum International Airport opening sees new site for DDF
Dubai Duty Free opened its doors at a new site as Al Maktoum International took its first
passenger flight in October 2013, providing the company with an additional 2,500 sq m of
retail space. While the airport is still in its second phase of development and therefore is
taking very few passengers compared to Dubai International Airport, in time it is expected
to become Dubai’s main airport as its sister facility reaches full capacity.
