Xian. Ye Xian is an orphan who finds comfort in a friendship with a
beautiful fish, who is actually the reincarnation of her mothers spirit. The

28. Which famous phrase originated from a puzzle where one has to connect 9
dots arranged in a square grid with 4 lines drawn continuously, without
pen leaving the paper?
30. What piece of music?
The idea came up at the time when I was completely bereft of ideas. I'd been working on my own music
for a while and was quite lost, actually. And I really appreciated someone coming along and saying, "Here's
a specific problem — solve it."
The thing from the agency said, "We want a piece of music that is inspiring, universal, blah-blah, da-da-
da, optimistic, futuristic, sentimental, emotional," this whole list of adjectives, and then at the bottom it said
"and it must be 3.25 seconds long."
I thought this was so funny and an amazing thought to actually try to make a little piece of music. It's
like making a tiny little jewel.
In fact, I made 84 pieces. I got completely into this world of tiny, tiny little pieces of music. I was so
sensitive to microseconds at the end of this that it really broke a logjam in my own work. Then when I'd
finished that and I went back to working with pieces that were like three minutes long, it seemed like
oceans of time.

33. Runner up for the name was “Ike”, suggested by founder Syd Cassyd. In
this case, he was naming it after the Iconoscope tube, which incidentally
got its name from the Greek εἰκών (“image”). So even had it been named
“Ike”, it would have still ultimately been named after “image”. “Ike” was
rejected as members thought that people would think the name was
coined after Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Pioneering TV engineer (and third American Academy of Television Arts
President) Harry Lubcke suggested that the name “Y” be used, named after
the “image orthicon tube” that was nicknamed the “Y”. The Academy
members liked it, but felt is should be more feminine, to match the
statuette, so switched it to the name “X”, a very slight change from the
original ‘Y’.

70. The Xs, or Society of Friends, are a Christian denomination with a long history of social
reformation. Xs played a strong role in the abolition of slavery and many philanthropic
businessmen of the Victorian era were Xs. Founded by George Fox as an alternative to
Church of England worship in the 17th century the Society of Friends was soon named
Xs. How did they get this name? Two stories exist. The first is that early followers of Fox
were so taken with religious mania that they shook(in context shook is a synonym of X),
while they preached. The other supposed origin of the term comes from Fox’s
autobiography. Charged with blasphemy for his new theology Fox was taken before the
magistrates. Fox was defiant and “bade them tremble at the word of the Lord.” One of
the magistrates retorted that the only person to X in the court was Fox himself.
