8. THE MODULAR MAN
The Modular is
an anthropometric scale of propor
tions.
It was developed as a visual
bridge between two incompatible
scales, the imperial and
the metric system. It is based on
the height of a man with his arm
raised.
It was used as a system to set out
a number of Le Corbusier's
buildings and was later codified
into two books.
9. THE MAN AND THE SUN
“To introduce the sun is the new
and most imperative duty of the
architect”
- Le Corbusier
The clock and the solar calendar
brought to architecture the "brise-
soleil" to be installed in front of the
windows of modern buildings.
11. NOWCIKI’S AND MAYER’S
VERSION OF CHANDIGARH
• Fan shape
• Gently flows between
the two river beds
spreading itself.
• Used topography for
drainage and rivers
to orient the plan.
12. DESIGNING CHANDIGARH:
CORBUSIER
About 8000 years ago the area was also known to be
a home to the Harappans. One such site was found
under Sector-17 in Chandigarh.
The layout of Chandigarh resembles Indus Valley
Civilization town planning patterns.
The plan of new Chandigarh incorporated Le
Corbusier’s principles of light, space and greenery.
The roads are designed and oriented in such a way
that most of the time during the day, they are under
shadow.
13. LE CORBUSIER CONCEIVED THE MASTER PLAN
OF CHANDIGARH AS ANALOGOUS TO HUMAN
BODY
• Head (The Capitol Complex, Sector 1)
• Heart (The City Centre Sector-17)
• Lungs (The leisure valley, Innumerable open
spaces and Sector greens)
• The intellect (The Cultural and Educational
institutions)
• The circulatory system (The network of roads, the
7Vs)
• The viscera (The Industrial Area)

16. THE ARCHITECT AND HIS
MANIFOLDS
Le Corbusier was fascinated with cinema. In 1926 he shot a film of a
housing estate at Pessac.
Le Corbusier disliked capitalism, and said that people's house size
should depend on the size of their family, not how rich they were.
Le Corbusier "obsessively preserved every letter, drawing and
photograph for posterity.
Before turning to architecture Le Corbusier was learning the trade of
watchcase engraving.
His plan for a "radiant city" (Ville Radieuse) was based on a plan by
Madrid-based urban planner Arturo Soriay Mata and was first
proposed in 1930 for Moscow.
17. Le Corbusier and his
architecture is
featured on a Swiss
francs banknote.
18. When he arrived in New York the
first time he made headlines
because he thought the
skyscrapers should be "huge and
a lot farther apart."
19. A full-scale
wooden mock-
up of Le
Corbusier's 3-
seater car
(named "Voiture
Maximum") was
built by the
famed Italian
designer Giorgio
Guigiaro for an
exhibition
commemorating
Corb's 100th
birthday.
20. To date, the most expensive Le
Corbusier work ever sold at
auction is “Femme,” a wooden
statue completed by Le
Corbusier in 1962 and sold at
Christie's in Zurich for 3.1
million francs ($3.3 million).
