HEADQUARTERS AND YEAR OF ESTABLISHMENT
1. ICAR
Formerly known as Imperial Council of Agricultural Research, it was established on 16 July
1929 as a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 in pursuance of the
report of the Royal Commission on Agriculture.
The ICAR has its headquarters at New Delhi.

Indian Agricultural Research Institute,
New Delhi
Established in 1905 at Pusa (Bihar), named as
Imperial Institute of Agricultural Research in
1911 and in 1919, it was renamed as Imperial
Agricultural Research Institute.
Following a devastating earth quake on
15th
January, 1934, the institute was shifted to
Delhi on 29th
July, 1936.
During the Post independence, the institute
has been renamed as Indian Agricultural
Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi.

National Dairy Research Institute,
Karnal, Haryana
Imperial Institute for Animal Husbandry and
Dairying was set up in Bangalore in 1923.
In 1936, it was renamed as Imperial Dairy
Institute and shifted to Karnal in 1955 and
renamed again as National Dairy Research
Institute.

14. Central Research Institute for Jute and
Allied Fibres, Barrackpore, West Bengal
Jute Agricultural Research Laboratory (JARL)
was established in 1938 at Dhaka. After
partition of the country, Jute Agricultural
Research Laboratory shifted to Chinsura in
West Bengal and then, Nilganj, Barrackpore in
1953 as Jute Agricultural Research Institute
(JARI). JARI was taken over by ICAR in
1966. In January 1990, the institute has been
rechristened to Central Research Institute for
Jute and Allied Fibres (CRIJAF).

ICAR initiated in 1983, All India Coordinated
Research Project on Agroforestry. National
Research Centre for Agroforestry (NRCAF)
established on 8 May, 1988. Renamed as
Central Agroforestry Research Institute
(CAFRI) on 1 December, 2014.

again upgraded to Indian Institute of Millets
Research (IIMR) in 2014.

Hyderabad
All India Coordinated Research Project on
Oilseeds (AICORPO) was established in 1967,
which was upgraded to Indian Institute of
Oilseeds Research in 3rd
February, 2015.
48. Indian Institute of Oil Palm Research,
Pedavegi, West Godawari, Telangana
National Research Centre for Oil Palm (Later
renamed as Directorate of Oil Palm Research)
established on February 19, 1995. In
November 2014, the institute was upgraded as
Indian Institute of Oil Palm Research (IIOPR).

Indian Institute of Water Management
(erstwhile Directorate of Water Management
or Water Technology Centre for Eastern
Region) was established on 12 May, 1988.

Indian Institute of Rice Research, formerly All
India Coordinated Rice Improvement Project
(AICRIP), was established in 1965. Elevated
as Directorate of Rice research in 1983 and
then, Indian Institute of Rice Research in 15
December, 2014.

Established as National Research Centre for
Women in Agriculture (NRCWA) in April
1996. Upgraded to Directorate in 2008 and
again upgraded as Central Institute for Women
in Agriculture (CIWA) in 2014.

Uttar Pradesh
All India Coordinated Research Project on
National Seed Project (Crops) was
established in 1979.
Rechristened as Directorate of Seed Research
(DSR) in 31 December, 2004. In 2016,
upgraded to Indian Institute of Seed Science
(IISS).

Indore, Madhya Pradesh
All India Coordinated Research Project on
Soybean was established in 1967 at New
Delhi. National Research Centre for Soybean
(NRCS) in 1987 which was upgraded to
Directorate of Soybean Research (DSR) and
then upgraded to Indian Institute of Soybean
Research (IISR) on 15 January, 2016.
