Parental Workshop
Success For Every Child
Every Child Matters
Every Child Can Succeed
• Every child has the potential to learn and
power to achieve success in school and in life.
• But the question every parent has is, how can
we make sure that every child succeeds?
• The answer lies in the successful collaboration
between parents and school with a common
goal of teaching children How to Learn?
What is Parenting?
• Allowing the child to discover the
hiMeeting the needs of the child.
• Guiding the child to become a
competent and independent.
We know that every child is unique.
Every parent is unique.
Some things will work and some won’t.
You are the parent. Ultimately, you will decide
what is best for your child.
What are Your
Expectations from
Your Child?
School, Family, Life

What Are your Child’s
Expectations from his

own life?
A child’s expectations maybe very different

from Parents
Ask Them!
The God-Given Power of Man
We need to tell our kids:
• His Power surpasses human mind
• Seek only His help
• But do not be passive and inactive.
• Remember - The Lord helps those who help
themselves.
• He has given you tremendous powers, use them
while appealing to him.
Human
Consciousness
You cannot teach a child any more
than you can grow a plant. The
plant develops its own nature. The
child also teaches itself. But you
can help it to go forward in its
own way.
- Swami Vivekananda
Expectation Or Aspirations
• Expectations are realistic beliefs or judgments
about what your child can achieve.
• “My child will do good in studies”
• Aspirations are desires, wishes, or goals.
• “My child will come first in all his classes”
• We need to assess our expectations
“My child will do good in studies” –

This is possible for everyone.

Leads to positive outcomes.
“My child will come first in all his
classes”

Not possible for everyone. Leads to
unnecessary pressure and disappointment.
Don’t Seek Perfection
See Perfection in Your Child
We want our children to
be successful
‘True success comes from
purity, perseverance and
patience
Sun will surely rise in
your horizon.’
- Swami Vivekananda
Most People Assume
• That success is essentially material.
That it can be measured in money,
prestige, or an abundance of
possessions. These certainly can
play a role; but having them does
not guarantee of success.
• The success we want our children
to achieve has to be defined in
many non material ways as well.
Keeping Spirituality Away From Our Lives Is A Mistake
• Keeping “Spirituality” away from our daily lives
and away from success; has been a mistake and
has profound effect…
• The parody is we spend years, from child hood on,
on hard work so as to earn lots of money and have
physical possessions. But loose our physical health
and our emotional wellbeing and bliss and then
spend the same money to get back our health?
You are successful.
Feel that success and

bless your kids with it.
Your Children
Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life's
longing for itself.

They come through you

but not from you,

And though they are with you

yet they belong not to you.
17 Marianna, Kahlil's Sister. Painting by Kahlil Gibran
Your Children
You may give them your love but

not your thoughts,

For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls,

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,

which you cannot visit, not even

in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them,

but seek not to make them like you.

For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
18 Marianna, Kahlil's Sister. Painting by Kahlil Gibran
On Children
You are the bows from which your children

as living arrows are sent forth.

The archer sees the mark upon the

path of the infinite,

and He bends you with His might

that His arrows may go swift and far.

Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;

For even as He loves the arrow that flies,

so He loves also the bow that is stable.

The Seer
and
The Seen
Can our kids know everything?
• What is 1+1?
• Do you know what is infinity+infinity?
• All of use understand some concept
and do not understand other.
• If we take this positively our lack of
understanding can be a starting point
to build skills and confidence
We need to teach our kids
“Learning How to Learn

is the most important
thing to learn.”
Parental engagement in
‘supporting learning in the home’
is the single most important factor
in student achievement.
Harris and Goodall, 2007

Role of Parents
• Education is wider than schooling
• But learning is much more wider ….
• And parents are the first and the most important
teachers who, knowingly or unknowingly help the
child learn
• But sometimes, kids learn from parents, what
parents do not want them to learn….
Parents need to go beyond giving
information and helping.
The need is to work together, in
partnership with your child
This can only happen if the focus
shifts from schooling to learning
Ways to get involved

with your Child’s
Learning
Help your child learn from daily activities
• Ask your child to calculate the tip at
a restaurant or check if the bill is
correct
• Identify and weigh vegetables at the
market. Let him calculate the price.
• Use movies or sport telecast to teach
them
Express Love for Learning
Set clear expectations
Provide tools and

crafts at home

Education Is Not The Preparation For Life - Education Is Life
John Dewey, USA
The deepest desire in a parent’s heart is to see that
one’s child achieve success in Life. Yet how many of
us realize that the way we are going about; is not
helping?
Einstein, Churchill and Edison had learning styles
that were not suited to their school style. The same
mismatch continues today for Millions of others.
Every child who has ever heard the story of Aladdin,
dreams of finding a magic lamp that when rubbed,
would deliver a genie, who could grant every wish.
Education Is Not The Preparation For Life - Education Is Life

Brain Use It or Lose It
• Imagine a latest Apple MacBook Pro
with 500GB memory. If I buy and do
not use for three years, it doesn’t lose
its potential.
• After three years, all we have to do is
update the system, program it and it
should be as good as new.
• But not for a human system, the
computer would not lose 500GB
memory capacity, but the human
beings do.
•Imagine a child locked for fifteen
years
•A computer lid is left fifteen days,
half open at 15 degrees angle
•If you tie up your hand for 15 days,
you may not be able to use it.

Parental Workshop - Success for Every Child

  • 1. Parental Workshop Success For Every Child Every Child Matters
  • 2. Every Child Can Succeed • Every child has the potential to learn and power to achieve success in school and in life. • But the question every parent has is, how can we make sure that every child succeeds? • The answer lies in the successful collaboration between parents and school with a common goal of teaching children How to Learn?
  • 3. What is Parenting? • Allowing the child to discover the hiMeeting the needs of the child. • Guiding the child to become a competent and independent.
  • 4. We know that every child is unique. Every parent is unique. Some things will work and some won’t. You are the parent. Ultimately, you will decide what is best for your child.
  • 5. What are Your Expectations from Your Child? School, Family, Life

  • 6. What Are your Child’s Expectations from his
own life? A child’s expectations maybe very different
 from Parents Ask Them!
  • 7. The God-Given Power of Man We need to tell our kids: • His Power surpasses human mind • Seek only His help • But do not be passive and inactive. • Remember - The Lord helps those who help themselves. • He has given you tremendous powers, use them while appealing to him.
  • 9. You cannot teach a child any more than you can grow a plant. The plant develops its own nature. The child also teaches itself. But you can help it to go forward in its own way. - Swami Vivekananda
  • 10. Expectation Or Aspirations • Expectations are realistic beliefs or judgments about what your child can achieve. • “My child will do good in studies” • Aspirations are desires, wishes, or goals. • “My child will come first in all his classes” • We need to assess our expectations
  • 11. “My child will do good in studies” –
 This is possible for everyone.
Leads to positive outcomes. “My child will come first in all his classes”
Not possible for everyone. Leads to unnecessary pressure and disappointment.
  • 12. Don’t Seek Perfection See Perfection in Your Child
  • 13. We want our children to be successful ‘True success comes from purity, perseverance and patience Sun will surely rise in your horizon.’ - Swami Vivekananda
  • 14. Most People Assume • That success is essentially material. That it can be measured in money, prestige, or an abundance of possessions. These certainly can play a role; but having them does not guarantee of success. • The success we want our children to achieve has to be defined in many non material ways as well.
  • 15. Keeping Spirituality Away From Our Lives Is A Mistake • Keeping “Spirituality” away from our daily lives and away from success; has been a mistake and has profound effect… • The parody is we spend years, from child hood on, on hard work so as to earn lots of money and have physical possessions. But loose our physical health and our emotional wellbeing and bliss and then spend the same money to get back our health?
  • 16. You are successful. Feel that success and
 bless your kids with it.
  • 17. Your Children Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
 They come through you
 but not from you,
And though they are with you
yet they belong not to you. 17 Marianna, Kahlil's Sister. Painting by Kahlil Gibran
  • 18. Your Children You may give them your love but
 not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even
 in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. 18 Marianna, Kahlil's Sister. Painting by Kahlil Gibran
  • 19. On Children You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the
 path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
 Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable. - On Children By Kahlil Gibran 19 Marianna, Kahlil's Sister. Painting by Kahlil Gibran
  • 21. Can our kids know everything? • What is 1+1? • Do you know what is infinity+infinity? • All of use understand some concept and do not understand other. • If we take this positively our lack of understanding can be a starting point to build skills and confidence
  • 22. We need to teach our kids “Learning How to Learn
is the most important thing to learn.”
  • 23.
  • 24.
  • 25. Parental engagement in ‘supporting learning in the home’ is the single most important factor in student achievement. Harris and Goodall, 2007
  • 26. My Involvement in my
Child’s Learning? • What am I already doing? • What can I do better? • What can I start doing?
  • 27. Parental involvement with schools Reading in class Going on Trips Parents’ Meeting Parental involvement with schooling Helping with homework Keeping track of coursework Parental engagement with children’s learning Moral support Interest in learning Guidance
  • 29. Role of Parents • Education is wider than schooling • But learning is much more wider …. • And parents are the first and the most important teachers who, knowingly or unknowingly help the child learn • But sometimes, kids learn from parents, what parents do not want them to learn….
  • 30. Parents need to go beyond giving information and helping. The need is to work together, in partnership with your child This can only happen if the focus shifts from schooling to learning
  • 31. Ways to get involved
 with your Child’s Learning
  • 32. Help your child learn from daily activities • Ask your child to calculate the tip at a restaurant or check if the bill is correct • Identify and weigh vegetables at the market. Let him calculate the price. • Use movies or sport telecast to teach them
  • 33. Express Love for Learning
  • 35. Provide tools and
 crafts at home
  • 37. Visit Museums, Libraries, Historical Places
  • 39. Read to your kids
 Read with your kids
  • 41. Education Is Not The Preparation For Life - Education Is Life John Dewey, USA As adults, we think that there are no such things. But what if wishes were to come true? If you know, that there is a way for you to make all your wishes come true, would you allow your soul to complete them for you? Would you then believe in the Aladdin’s wonder lamp, which is within you? Discovering this secret from within every child
is ‘Schooling’ and is ‘Parenting’ Unlock this secret power within! Education is the manifestation of that secret power, which is within every child.

  • 100. Education Is Not The Preparation For Life - Education Is Life John Dewey, USA The deepest desire in a parent’s heart is to see that one’s child achieve success in Life. Yet how many of us realize that the way we are going about; is not helping? Einstein, Churchill and Edison had learning styles that were not suited to their school style. The same mismatch continues today for Millions of others. Every child who has ever heard the story of Aladdin, dreams of finding a magic lamp that when rubbed, would deliver a genie, who could grant every wish.
  • 101. Education Is Not The Preparation For Life - Education Is Life John Dewey, USA As adults, we think that there are no such things. But what if wishes were to come true? • 102. Brain Use It or Lose It • Imagine a latest Apple MacBook Pro with 500GB memory. If I buy and do not use for three years, it doesn’t lose its potential. • After three years, all we have to do is update the system, program it and it should be as good as new. • But not for a human system, the computer would not lose 500GB memory capacity, but the human beings do.
  • 103. •Imagine a child locked for fifteen years •A computer lid is left fifteen days, half open at 15 degrees angle •If you tie up your hand for 15 days, you may not be able to use it.
