Latinos and Obama’s “New Deal”
During this session we will review the quantitative as well as qualitative growth of Latinos in the American
society, particularly in California. It is no longer only a migration issue but a social phenomenon that needs
to be examined from that perspective. The Latino imprint in daily life is not an issue for discussion. What will
be important to discover is where this new energy is heading, what new course will it take, what challenges
and opportunities will it present, and what can be foreseen today beyond the immediate short term.

Latino Appeal and the U.S. Media
We will discuss the rich and complex relationship between the mass media and the Latino identity. What
is the role that media should play, and what role have they played up to now? Is there something
recognizable as a Latino identity? What is it? Does the media recognize that preexistent identity, or
would they rather try to reshape it every day? Who builds whom? These are some of the questions that
will be asked in the session.

Promoting Latin America: Success Stories
This roundtable will be dedicated to hearing the success stories some countries in the region use to
promote their economies. In the context of a recession, what is the meaning of promotion, what are
the threats, what instruments have to be studied, what new tools have to be invented? But also, what

America. To continue talking about successful stories, these, and many other questions have to be
