AGENDA
 Introduction to HCI
 Impacts of HCI on Economy
 Impacts of HCI on Society
 Impacts of HCI on Culture
 Impacts of potential future developments in HCI
2
Human Computer Interaction
The study of how people interact with computers and planned
design of human-centric interactive computer systems.
3
4
 Increase automation
 Quicker and Accurate Inputs
 Shop at ease
 Mobile communication
 Specialized Interfaces
Increased Automation
5
The advances in technologies make manufacturing tasks can now be
completely automated. Machines can work constantly without having a
break producing more accurate outputs than manual labors.
Increasing automation leads to improving productivity.
Organization will no longer need a lot of people to work for them which
leads to increasing amount of unemployed people.
Unemployment leads to weaker economy since unemployed people will
not be spending much money on things.
Quicker and Accurate Inputs
High technology devices can read data automatically making thing much
easier, quicker, more accurate and reducing complexity than manual inputs.
Speed up and accurate inputs leads to quicker and correct outputs.
6
Shop at Ease
7
 Shopping online is more convenient for users since they can
purchase whatever they want without needing to leave their
home.
 E-Commerce website is much cheaper to set up than to build
a physical store or rent out the space.
People do less exercise sitting in front of computer all day long which
could lead to unhealthy lives
Drawback
Mobile Communication
Allows different companies to make a deal or talk about the business
over the internet or phone lines reducing both time and money for
going manually.
8
Specialized Interfaces
Technologies like voice input, text-to-speech and thought input helps
disable people to interact with the computer more efficiently and that affect to
economy because even disable people would be useful person which in turns
improve the productivity of the economy.
9
10
 Ease of Communication
 Improved Usability
 Remote Control
 Specialized Interfaces
Ease of Communication
11
The ways we communicate is no longer limited to letters
or face to face. Mobile technology has enabled people to
communicate to anyone, anywhere, whenever they want.
This very ease of communication makes people unable
to socialize well in person and it could also leads to
untrue or poorer relationships.
Benefits
Downsides
Improved Usability
Later electronic devices make sure the input and output process are as simple
and easy for the user as possible. With these user friendly devices, people do
not require to have much training in order to control the functions of these
devices like past generations. Examples of user friendly devices are touch
screen, voice recognition and motion-sensing controller.
12
Remote Control
Remote controlled machines have been created for the purpose of allowing
people to explore dangerous environments in complete safety. Remote
control drones have been used in the army for monitoring the enemy territory
without fear of being harmed. These machines can also be used for search &
destroy collapsed buildings and scientific exploration. This is a much safer
way to go these missions than sending in real people.
13
Specialized Interfaces
High technology devices allow people with disabilities to help themselves
without much help from anyone. It could make them confident and feel more
independent so that they will no longer feel like they are being left behind from
the society.
14
15
 Improved social aspect
 Minimized language barriers
 Develop living standards
 Deskilling
Improved Social Aspect
Everyone get a chance to learn about other cultures and
traditions. Being able to understand one another will prevent
causing offence and will open up new relations to other
countries.
16
This in turns can have other culture influence on the society
and it could diminish the own nation’s culture.
Minimized Language Barriers
Computers and smartphones can now help to translate other languages just by
typing or saying words in native language and it will respond with translations in
their chosen language. This simple use of translators can reduce the barriers
between different cultures therefore people have been able to communicate
easier not only for social aspect but also with work purposes.
17
Develop Living Standards
Comparing to 60 and 70 years ago, HCI has changed the way cultures work
and live.
18
Some examples would be :
 enabled people to communicate without having to be connected to
something by a wire,
 nearly all manufacturing are using machinery,
 people tend to surf on Internet for information rather than reading
hardback book and
 even young children nowadays are exposed to a lot of technology.
This shows that our living standards are massively improved within few
decades.
Deskilling
19
Deskilling work is when one's job is replaced with a
machine which will be able to do the job quicker, faster
and for a lot cheaper.
Due to these new technologies, deskilling becomes more and more of a
greater problem.
WHY ?
► Since automatic machinery removes the need of specialists and labor, it could
increase the level of unemployment and employee can feel worthless and
under value which makes them less motivated to work.
► many people are losing the skills that were present before. As technology
improves, people will dependent on machinery limiting their ability and thinking
power to know how things will work.
IMPACTS OF
FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS IN HCI
20
As HCI continues to develop, there are many possible developments
that could be implemented in the future. Some potential developments
include:_
 Artificial intelligence
 3D Holographic Projection Technology
 Thought Input
21
Artificial Intelligence
The study of science and technology that focuses on the creation of
intelligent machines that work and behave like humans. Robotics is a
major part of AI. Currently, no robots or machines exhibit complete
artificial intelligence.
22
Impacts of Artificial Intelligence
23
Nearly all the basic tasks done by humans will totally be
replaced by AI while human can spend more time doing more
constructive things.
×With machines that have their own intelligence with the ability
to think, analyze, and make decision like human, it could
potentially overpower human race.
×Human mind and its capabilities might go to waste
×Increases the possibility that these AI machines could take
unexpected actions beyond our control.
3D Holographic Projection
Magnificent technology that records the light scattered from an object
and present it in high resolution 3D object that allows the user to
interact with it without needing any special equipment.
24
Impacts of Holographic Technology
25
 In future, holographic displays will be replacing all present
displays in all sizes, from small phone screen to large
projector.
 Interactive visual 3D blueprints or designs could me made,
or even become part of the overall design process.
× Without the need of any special device, people could face
eye problems from 3D projection as their eyes are focusing
directly on the screen.
Thought Input
Thought Input is technology that allow users to input and control the
interfaces according their thoughts.
Want to dial up your friend? In coming years, you'll simply think the
phone number and your phone will start dialing !!
26
Impacts of Thought Input
27
 Things becomes much more easier, faster and productive .
 Physical input devices are no longer needed.
 Very useful especially for disable people who cannot speak
and can hardly move.
× Things will get worse if it is used for bad purpose.

Impacts of HCI

  • 1. IMPACTS OF HCI PRESENTED BY SHWE YEE MYA WIN 1
  • 2. AGENDA  Introduction to HCI  Impacts of HCI on Economy  Impacts of HCI on Society  Impacts of HCI on Culture  Impacts of potential future developments in HCI 2
  • 3. Human Computer Interaction The study of how people interact with computers and planned design of human-centric interactive computer systems. 3
  • 4. 4  Increase automation  Quicker and Accurate Inputs  Shop at ease  Mobile communication  Specialized Interfaces
  • 5. Increased Automation 5 The advances in technologies make manufacturing tasks can now be completely automated. Machines can work constantly without having a break producing more accurate outputs than manual labors. Increasing automation leads to improving productivity. Organization will no longer need a lot of people to work for them which leads to increasing amount of unemployed people. Unemployment leads to weaker economy since unemployed people will not be spending much money on things.
  • 6. Quicker and Accurate Inputs High technology devices can read data automatically making thing much easier, quicker, more accurate and reducing complexity than manual inputs. Speed up and accurate inputs leads to quicker and correct outputs. 6
  • 7. Shop at Ease 7  Shopping online is more convenient for users since they can purchase whatever they want without needing to leave their home.  E-Commerce website is much cheaper to set up than to build a physical store or rent out the space. People do less exercise sitting in front of computer all day long which could lead to unhealthy lives Drawback
  • 8. Mobile Communication Allows different companies to make a deal or talk about the business over the internet or phone lines reducing both time and money for going manually. 8
  • 9. Specialized Interfaces Technologies like voice input, text-to-speech and thought input helps disable people to interact with the computer more efficiently and that affect to economy because even disable people would be useful person which in turns improve the productivity of the economy. 9
  • 10. 10  Ease of Communication  Improved Usability  Remote Control  Specialized Interfaces
  • 11. Ease of Communication 11 The ways we communicate is no longer limited to letters or face to face. Mobile technology has enabled people to communicate to anyone, anywhere, whenever they want. This very ease of communication makes people unable to socialize well in person and it could also leads to untrue or poorer relationships. Benefits Downsides
  • 12. Improved Usability Later electronic devices make sure the input and output process are as simple and easy for the user as possible. With these user friendly devices, people do not require to have much training in order to control the functions of these devices like past generations. Examples of user friendly devices are touch screen, voice recognition and motion-sensing controller. 12
  • 13. Remote Control Remote controlled machines have been created for the purpose of allowing people to explore dangerous environments in complete safety. Remote control drones have been used in the army for monitoring the enemy territory without fear of being harmed. These machines can also be used for search & destroy collapsed buildings and scientific exploration. This is a much safer way to go these missions than sending in real people. 13
  • 14. Specialized Interfaces High technology devices allow people with disabilities to help themselves without much help from anyone. It could make them confident and feel more independent so that they will no longer feel like they are being left behind from the society. 14
  • 15. 15  Improved social aspect  Minimized language barriers  Develop living standards  Deskilling
  • 16. Improved Social Aspect Everyone get a chance to learn about other cultures and traditions. Being able to understand one another will prevent causing offence and will open up new relations to other countries. 16 This in turns can have other culture influence on the society and it could diminish the own nation’s culture.
  • 17. Minimized Language Barriers Computers and smartphones can now help to translate other languages just by typing or saying words in native language and it will respond with translations in their chosen language. This simple use of translators can reduce the barriers between different cultures therefore people have been able to communicate easier not only for social aspect but also with work purposes. 17
  • 18. Develop Living Standards Comparing to 60 and 70 years ago, HCI has changed the way cultures work and live. 18 Some examples would be :  enabled people to communicate without having to be connected to something by a wire,  nearly all manufacturing are using machinery,  people tend to surf on Internet for information rather than reading hardback book and  even young children nowadays are exposed to a lot of technology. This shows that our living standards are massively improved within few decades.
  • 19. Deskilling 19 Deskilling work is when one's job is replaced with a machine which will be able to do the job quicker, faster and for a lot cheaper. Due to these new technologies, deskilling becomes more and more of a greater problem. WHY ? ► Since automatic machinery removes the need of specialists and labor, it could increase the level of unemployment and employee can feel worthless and under value which makes them less motivated to work. ► many people are losing the skills that were present before. As technology improves, people will dependent on machinery limiting their ability and thinking power to know how things will work.
  • 21. As HCI continues to develop, there are many possible developments that could be implemented in the future. Some potential developments include:_  Artificial intelligence  3D Holographic Projection Technology  Thought Input 21
  • 22. Artificial Intelligence The study of science and technology that focuses on the creation of intelligent machines that work and behave like humans. Robotics is a major part of AI. Currently, no robots or machines exhibit complete artificial intelligence. 22
  • 23. Impacts of Artificial Intelligence 23 Nearly all the basic tasks done by humans will totally be replaced by AI while human can spend more time doing more constructive things. ×With machines that have their own intelligence with the ability to think, analyze, and make decision like human, it could potentially overpower human race. ×Human mind and its capabilities might go to waste ×Increases the possibility that these AI machines could take unexpected actions beyond our control.
  • 24. 3D Holographic Projection Magnificent technology that records the light scattered from an object and present it in high resolution 3D object that allows the user to interact with it without needing any special equipment. 24
  • 25. Impacts of Holographic Technology 25  In future, holographic displays will be replacing all present displays in all sizes, from small phone screen to large projector.  Interactive visual 3D blueprints or designs could me made, or even become part of the overall design process. × Without the need of any special device, people could face eye problems from 3D projection as their eyes are focusing directly on the screen.
  • 26. Thought Input Thought Input is technology that allow users to input and control the interfaces according their thoughts. Want to dial up your friend? In coming years, you'll simply think the phone number and your phone will start dialing !! 26
  • 27. Impacts of Thought Input 27  Things becomes much more easier, faster and productive .  Physical input devices are no longer needed.  Very useful especially for disable people who cannot speak and can hardly move. × Things will get worse if it is used for bad purpose.
