At 11am on 11 November 1918, the guns fell silent on the Western Front, marking the end of World War I after over four years of continuous warfare. The Allied armies had driven back the German invaders over the preceding four months, inflicting heavy defeats. In November, Germany called for an armistice to secure a peace settlement, accepting Allied terms that amounted to unconditional surrender. This first modern world conflict mobilized over 70 million people and left between 9-13 million dead, perhaps a third with no known grave.
