According to the Glossary of Education Reform, equity refers to the principle of fairness in education. Inequities occur when biased or unfair policies, programs, practices, or situations contribute to a lack of equality in educational performance, results, and outcomes. The development and use of open educational resources has the potential to create equitable learning experiences for all students. Open education is deeply rooted in the belief that teachers have the freedom to develop content that meets the needs of their students. Join us for this webinar to hear the ways in which colleges can consider issues of equity when designing and delivering OER courses and degree programs. Presenters will share how open educational resources, policies, and practices can support equity and diversity through the development of culturally relevant learning experiences that emphasize inclusion and celebrate diversity. - 21. The mission of Achieving the Dream is to lead and support a national network of community colleges to achieve sustainable institutional transformation through sharing knowledge, innovative solutions, and effective practices and policies leading to improved outcomes for all students.

Achieving the Dream’s Statement on Equity Achieving the Dream believes that access to a high quality education in an inclusive environment is the right of all individuals and imperative for the continued advancement of a strong democracy and workforce. Achieving the Dream also believes higher education institutions have an obligation to work toward equity for their students. Equity is grounded in the principle of fairness. In higher education, equity refers to ensuring that each student receives what they need to be successful through the intentional design of the college experience. Achieving the Dream expects colleges to dismantle the barriers facing underserved students. Colleges must routinely scrutinize structural barriers to equity and invest in equity-minded policies, practices, and behaviors that lead to success for all students.

- 24. OER Degree Initiative Equity Goal Grantess must: • Ensure access by and support for low income students and students of color in their OER degree programs
- 25. OER Grantee Challenges • Availability of culturally relevant OER content • Diverse content creators • Awareness • OER content that has a white American male slant • Content that is unintentionally biased.

OER Grantee Success • Self-motivated faculty willing to identify and create culturally diverse content • Incorporation of student voice • Exploration and adoption of culturally responsive pedagogy • Faculty are taking advantage of the flexibility and adaptability of OERs to meet a range of students’ needs
