OER/ZERO TEXTBOOK COST DEGREE INITIATIVES
CENTRAL LAKES COLLEGE, BRAINERD AND STAPLES, MN
CLC FIRST PUBLIC COLLEGE IN STATE TO OFFER Z-DEGREE
By taking selected classes, Central Lakes College students can earn their Associate of Arts Degree without ever buying a textbook. It’s called the Z-Degree and CLC is the
first in the state to offer it. CLC built its Z-Degree by offering its faculty opportunities to review potential open education resources (OER), redesign courses to use OER,
and to author OER for CLC courses. Central Lakes College – Brainerd and Staples is one of 37 Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (www.minnstate.edu), offering
excellent, affordable education in 54 communities across the state. We are a comprehensive community and technical college serving about 5,500 students per year. With a
knowledgeable, caring faculty and modern, results-oriented programs in comfortable facilities, CLC is the college of choice for seekers of success.

REGISTERING FOR A ZERO TEXTBOOK COST COURSE
Zero or Low Textbook Cost Classes at CLC
Central Lakes College offers a Z-Degree Associate of Arts. A Z-Degree is a
zero-textbook-cost degree. This means that a student can earn an A.A.
without buying a textbook. Any CLC student can take Z-Degree classes, and
students may take as many Z-Degree classes as desired or available.
Our Low Cost Textbook courses offer textbooks for under $40.

Minnesota Wide Initiatives
Northland Community and Technical College Joins Distance Minnesota Consortium To Utilize Open Educational
Resources For Student Benefit
Thief River Falls, Minn./San Francisco, CA - Distance Minnesota has received a grant to create new degree programs
using high quality open educational resources (OER) in new degree programs delivered by Alexandria Technical and
Community College, Northland Community and Technical College and Northwest Technical College. The initiative,
which involves 38 community colleges in 13 states, is designed to help remove financial roadblocks that can derail
students’ progress and spur improvements that will increase the likelihood of degree and certificate completion.
FUTURE GOALS
◼We have work to do to advertise
OER options to students and to
make them aware of OER
options.
◼We have to continue to add
courses with zero or low cost
materials. There are only a few
classes in a few of our Goal
Areas.
◼This semester, we have six faculty
adding or switching to OER
materials.
