Design as a Superpower: exploring forces of good and evil As designers our toolkit is being continuously enriched with smarter ways of working. Today’s designer weaves social psychology, behavioural economics and even neuroscience into their work turning design into a superpower. But with great power comes great responsibility. Often these powers are used to create Dark Patterns that mislead and manipulate users. In this talk we’ll cover the rise and enrichment of design method, it’s dark applications and a future in which designers may be required to take a hippocratic oath.

I work at OpenTable, the worlds largest provider of online restaurant reservations. You may have used our app to book a table at a fancy restaurant, or maybe you've worked at one of those restaurants and used our software. Since joining the design team, I have become one of the least fun people to dine out with. Just ask my wife. I used to be fully engrossed in our conversations, but now when we go out for a meal, I keep one eye on her, and one eye on the host, server, and kitchen staff to see how they deliver their unique style of service. I will share with you some of the many hidden interactions that go on behind the scenes in a restaurant. Through these stories you will learn how many restaurants gather information about their diners in order to promote their own agenda, while others choose to use that information in order to create rich, immersive experiences. Finally, I will share principles that will help you know when the use of personal information is proper, and when it is questionable.

Agile has taken over the software development world. As a result we've created highly-efficient software engineering teams incentivized to get bug-free code shipped quickly. What we've failed to do is empower these teams with the decision-making mechanism necessary to decide: What should we work on? What's the best prioritization for our work? When is it done? (Shipping != done) Is it meeting customer expectations? Should we continue to design and optimize this feature? It is imperative that our product teams understand how to practice effective product discovery methods which can simultaneously feed our product delivery efforts. The most effective way to achieve this is in collaborative, cross-functional teams that base their decisions on evidence from the market gained through experimentation and hypothesis. More and more, designers are being asked to help businesses make important decisions. Our ability to connect the disconnected and see the unseen is increasingly valuable in generating new opportunities and boosting commercial value. In part, the growth of the design industry's value is being driven by businesses realizing that every great experience is designed - we're helping render the intent of the next great phone, killer mobile app or customer service interaction into reality. And, at times, we're spending an exorbitant amount of energy and resources chasing the opportunity to design for the next greatest "thing". While we admirably practice our craft on these design challenges, improve a customer experience or help position businesses for greater success, we must also recognize the rest of the undesigned world before us. Why are we allowing so many social systems' experiences to exist ineffectively or even when excruciatingly painful? As designers, we owe ourselves the opportunity to fall in love with these problems and mold a response into something better for ourselves, family and friends, neighbors and community. We must be more human-centered, not simply follow a human-centered methodology. It's time we leverage more of our skill for an even higher purpose: solving the world's most pressing social challenges. This talk examines the unique value and power of designers and design thinkers to impact social change. It will provide case studies, current examples and inspiration for designers aspiring to leave a bigger imprint on society.

Everything we make has an intent, an output, and ultimately has consequences on how others live. At different scales, therefore, the products and services we design affect individuals, communities and societies. In the past decade, we as designers have started becoming aware of this perspective, and we have tackled projects with the desire to tackle some of the wicked problems we see around, and to have a positive impact. Both commercial companies and non-profit organisations have realised how powerful this combination of design approaches and impact-driven projects can be. However, we are still building our toolkit, still failing often (sometimes in a painfully slow fashion, without realising it). We are still trying to understand how to be catalysts for social change when the scope for our work is confined by performance indicators that stop at 'profit growth for the quarter'. Starting from a series of case studies, the talk wants to collect some of the successful (and less so) stories of the past few years, and inspire a perspective to start talking about meaningful design and about the impact that innovative projects have - over time.

Google, Facebook, Airbnb and Drobpox as well as lesser known companies like DocuSign are rapidly expanding their UX Research departments to keep up with the increasing demand for user feedback. Ironically, while enthusiasm for UX Research is high, organizations often ignore research results as they move quickly through the product development cycle. My challenges with convincing organizations to act on research data led me to experiment with different tools and methods to make UX research more actionable in fast-pace environments. In my talk, I will share case studies from recent projects with companies in Silicon Valley to illustrate how to conduct and communicate research in a way that empowers teams and leads to specific actions within organizations.

This talk explores the responsibility of a designer and demonstrates why sometimes "over-designed" is good. User interface is often seen as a crystal goblet, a transparent container which should emphasise but never obstruct the content. A lot has been said and written about the "disappearing computer' or natural user interfaces and "the best UI is no UI" mantra is so ubiquitous today. In my talk I hope to shed a new light on these concepts demonstrating how the "no UI" approach may sometimes be considered harmful, and results in products which confuse, scare, or deceive people.
