- Basamuk – riots May 2009
- Madang town – nationwide riots, May 2009. But the riots were unrelated, and targeted two different groups – enclave workers of a state-owned company at Basamuk and business migrants in the nationwide riots. Riots – opportunistic – but also based on grievances over reserved businesses (trade stores, kai bars). Recent story in the national estimated that only 10 percent of reserved businesses were run by PNGeans
- Within China, they have a bad reputation – routinely referred to as the ‘ secret society mob ’ (hei shehui) by enclave mine workers. Ambiguous relationship to the central state, which likes remittances, but not the bad press associated with riots, such as the ones in SI
- The majority of new Asian business migrants are from China, 90 percent from Fuqing, specific families within specific villages – closed network migration pattern replicated in many countries – Japan, the US, Argentina and Australia
- Youyi cun, Fuqing. Cockle pickers, Dover. Also an ambiguous relationship to the central state
- Opulent, empty houses
- Typically six stories high – millions commonly spent on building and renovations
- Rural infrastructure – largest donation 50,000 yuan
- Building of churches (very Christian area), revival of formerly discouraged (and expensive) customs – tombstones, weddings
- Enclave workers located mainly at two sites: Basamuk refinery
- KBK mine site
- Pipeline workers – have largely returned to China
- Brand new kitchen at Basamuk – previous one burnt down in riots – Chinese and PNG staff mingle more at Basamuk, however, partly brought together by the poor cooking of the Chinese mess..
- Refinery site more diverse – workers from ENFI 20 (Shanghai), ENFI 22 (Tangshan). Contracting companies financially separate from MCC – this is the source of many problems. Engineers – such as the chap in glasses – earn over 8000 yuan per month.
