Abstract Tablets are an ever-increasing presence in a number of application areas, including the medical space. Google has aggressively gone after the mobile device market, including partnering with ASUS to launch the Google Nexus 7. In 2012 Apple launched the iPad Mini, competing head-to-head with the Nexus 7. This teardown compares the two popular products, providing insight into the design process. We have also performed teardowns on dozens of tablets, learn more here. Andrew Goldberg, Technical Writer After a brief stint in Marine Engineering at Cal Maritime, where he tinkered with big diesel engines and visited South America on the Training Ship Golden Bear, Andrew studied General Engineering at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. While there, he was quickly absorbed by his studies in Mechatronics, a multidisciplinary field of engineering that focuses on the combination of several kinds of engineering to design awesome systems. • This is a preliminary score, given that this Rift is essentially a beta
product. We'll know for sure once the real thing is released down the
line—but here's what we've got for now!
• Standard Phillips #1 screws are used in the headset and
control box, making both a cinch to open.
• Standard clips around the perimeter make separating the
front panel pretty easy.
• Two foam adhesive pads holding the LCD in place were a
tad annoying, but easy to re-adhere during reassembly.
• The entire device can be taken apart in less than 10
minutes.
• Kapton tape is used to hold some cables in place, which
should probably be replaced with new tape if the product is
disassembled.
