NEW MEDIA & TECHNOLOGIES
OF REPRESENTATION
MASS COMMUNICATION
• With the advent of the internet, the media
has become highly participatory and there is
an ever increasing amount of user generated
content available to the masses
• See the timeline of Media development
(answer question 2 on p.36)
NEW MEDIA DEFINED
• The combining of traditional media forms with
computer based media is what is termed new media
• All emerging digital or electronic communication that
combines text, graphics, sound and video using
computer technology is new media
• New media also refers to on-demand access to content
any time, anywhere, on any digital device, as well as
interactive user feedback, creative participation.
Another aspect of new media is the real-time
generation of new, unregulated content
NEW MEDIA & MORAL PANICS
• Media in Mintues – Moral Panics
Moral Panic
• “Any widespread anxiety about an issue that is
set to threaten the very fabric of society”
• Worries about new forms of media are as old as
information itself
• Socrates famously warned against writing
because it would diminish people’s memory
• Older generations warn against new technology
and complain that society is abandoning the
‘wholesome’ old media, unaware that this same
technology was considered to be harmful when
first introduced
DIGITAL MUSIC
• Digitized music combined with file sharing
software has allowed peer-to-peer sharing of
content
• This has had massive issues with copyright
infringement
• It has also provided opportunities for
individuals to connect with a wider audience
COPYRIGHT
• File sharing online presents a major challenge
to existing copyright laws
• The Creative Commons project was developed
to allow people to share and reuse copyright
material in a manner that is legal and
consistent with the rules of copyright
• Google, Wikipedia and flickr have
incorporated creative commons licenses into
their websites
WEB 2.0
• Invented by Tim O’Reilly, the term describes
the way the internet has evolved to
incorporate greater interactivity, socialisation
and user-generated content
• Blogging, Wikis, Social Networks,
Crowdfunding platforms are all examples of
Web 2.0 technology
NEW DEVICES & MEDIUMS
• Tablets
• eBOOK Readers
• Smartphones
• Massively Multiplayer online role-playing
games (MMORPGs)
TECHNOLOGIES OF REPRESENTATION
• Digital photography and digital image
manipulation are a consequence of
convergence and the development of new
media
• The Dove ‘Evolution’ campaign illustrates this
well
Digitally Enhanced Images
• Dove ‘Evolution’ commercial
CULTURE JAMMING
• The process of mimicking or modifying a
media message, particularly those for in ads,
to make a political or social statement
• See Calvin Klein example of p.55
RETCUT TRAILERS
• Chopper
