The NESTI project aims to transform public transport ticketing in the North East of England through the implementation of a smart ticketing system. Key aspects of the project include developing a smartcard called the Pop card, installing new ticket machines and gates on the Metro system, providing electronic ticket machines on buses, developing a website for online ticket purchases and account management, and establishing a back office system called HOPS to record travel data. The project is a collaboration between local authorities and transport operators in the region and involves an investment of over $25 million to develop an integrated smart ticketing infrastructure across different modes of public transportation.
