A Clockwork Orange is a 1971 film adaptation of Anthony Burgess's 1962 novel of
the same name. It was written, directed and produced by Stanley Kubrick. It
features disturbing, violent images, facilitating its social commentary on
psychiatry, youth gangs, and other social, political, and economic subjects in a
dystopian, future Britain.
5. Visual Codes
• Flashing images of pictures related
to the film with words that
describe the film.
• The flashing shocks the audience
and grabs their attention.
• Shows clips from the film broken
which gives the impression that
the film is unusual and different.
• Also show who directs it
6. Dress Codes
• Alex and his “Droogs” (Friends) during the killing scenes
wore a white shirt, white trousers, white braces and a
white (ish) underwear that go on top of the
trousers, they also wore black boots and a black top
hat.
• They each had their own individual characteristic for
example: Alex wore false eye lashes on one eye, top
and bottom, and carried a cane. Dim wore a chain
round his waist, Georgia wore yellow eye shadow with
a black line on the inside of his left eye, and Pete wore
a purple eye shadow around his left eye looks like he
has a black eye. This is unconventional of the horror
genre as make up is seen as a feminine aspect and
therefore it seems less scary, however it is unusual and
controversial which is what the director wanted to
achieve in this movie.
• The rest of the characters wore typically 60’s
clothes, (bright colours, short skirts and cardigans), that
is when the film was set and they wanted to make the
film realistic so used typical clothes for the other
characters.

Non Diagetic Sound

9. Narrative Codes (Film)
Prop
• Hero -Alex
• Dispatcher – Narrator (Alex)
• Helper -Georgie, Dim, & Pete
• Villain – Alex (ish), Chief Guard Barnes, Dim and Georgie, Mr. Frank Alexander,
• Princess – Alex
• Donor - None
Not Conventional of it horror genre as the main character is more than one type which is
confusing for the audience, however it works with the film itself as its meant to question
your morals
Todorov
• Equilibrium – Alex and his Droogs happy killing and Raping random citizens
• Disruption – Alex gets arrested
• Recognition – has aversion therapy
• Attempt to Repair Disruption – He tries to Kill himself
• Reinstatement – Alex is back to his murderous self.
Unconventional and Conventional of its genre as traditionally in horrors the good triumphs over
evil and in this case Alex is good, however he is also the villain and therefore its almost an
unhappy Equilibrium.
