Question 4 AS Media Evaluation
1. Question 4 : Who would be
the target audience for your
media product and why?
2. From our initial treatment we have always stated that
we wanted to target the young adult age bracket,
between 18 and 25; we wanted to include mature
themes to portray the true grueling reality of black film
noir but also make it relevant by including modernized
ideologies, of depression and relationship pressures
to create a sense of escapism for young adults
entering a very stressful and busy section of their life.
We follow our protagonist change from an unwanted,
alcoholic, depressed detective struggling to find his
purpose to a man motivated by revenge and
compelled by his love. We hope this will inspire an
audience of young adults to find a way out of their
monotonous lives so they too can find purpose and
live life to their fullest. We hope our media product can
be both entertaining and inspiring by following an
intense dramatic enigmatic murder mystery at the
same time as recognizing the flaws of the general
public.
Basic Target Audience
3. Demographics
Demographics are a way of classifying an
audience dependent on their jobs and status
and is typically broke down using the following
table. The highest level of demographics, group
A, hold professions and are the most wealthy
whereas as you move down the groups it shows
the less wealthy portion of the population, in the
working class sector. Our media product
appeals to a wide range of different
demographics; the traditional noir genre would
be more well known by an older more educated
audience and therefore would interest those in
group A of the demographics table. This is
supported by the mise en scene of professional
characters such as the police
detectives in high end suits and tailored office wear creating a relatable environment.
However, our plans to release and distribute the pilot on on-demand services make the
product available for free to those in a lower demographic group as well. Furthermore,
as briefly mentioned before, the sense of escapism that the noir diegesis will create will
interest those in groups D and E because the lack of verisimilitude will help them distract
themselves from the unfortunate social and economic situations they are in.

5. Psychographics
Psychographics are a way of dividing the market
assuming their media consumption depends on
their lifestyle personality and aspirations. The
psychographics table defines the most common
and important divisions; it believed everyone falls
into at least one bracket. I believe our film noir pilot
would attract those in the “strugglers” and
“explorers” sectors because the alternative over
exaggerated narratives that film noir offers. The
intense fight scenes and unlikely mystery that is
uncommon to real life will offer those struggling a
sense of escapism and it will give those seeking
exploration something new and different to
discover and become involved in, way beyond real life. Those seeking enlightenment and
reform could also benefit from our independent film because by following the progression
of our protagonist on a mission of not only solving a crime by finding himself could inspire
them to also put their life back on track. As with most films our noir will inevitably cover a
variety of phycographic models and appeal to mass audience because there are different
characters and storylines to appeal to everyone as well as common interesting relatable
themes such as romance and revenge to keep mainstreamers entertained.

7. BBFC Rating
No promotion of drugs
Our narrative doesn’t directly touch on drug use howver if the were ever included in future
developments they would only play a contextualizing role to establish a charchthers dark past or
gangster characteristics .
No dwelling on detail of dangerous behavior
Our film opening does contain a detailed fight scene howver there is no gore or life threatening
dangerous behavior being shown and the cuts are fast and snappy leaving no room for real detail
No nudity constraints
Our film opening contains no nudity however in the development of our film to have the option
to include it perhaps to establish the sexual objectification of the femme fetal or the vulnerability
of a “girl next door” character would create a strong and powerful message.
No detailed sex scenes
There is an obvious connection between Scarlet and Booth however there is no need
for graphic sexual content as any relationships can just be discreetly inferred
The BBFC are the British Board of Film Classification; set up in 1912 they
bring a degree of uniformity to the industry giving films age ratings to
divide there content into appropriate age ranges. We believe our noir
would have to have a 15 rating as the content can become extremely
violent and curses are used frequently.
8. Uses and gratifications model
The uses and gratifications model
states that people actively seek out
media products to suit their specific
personal needs. Unlink the
hypodermic needle theory, they
choose what they take from the media
product and how they act upon it. I
believe our audience would include
those going through a rough period of
their lives looking for an escapism into
a different world but also for inspiration
on how to accept themselves and
learn to create a better more fulfilling
lifestyle.

hierarchy of needs could be found by
