2. In 1995, Siena city centre was included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
This recognition is aimed to the enhancement and protection of cultural and natural
heritage.
3. THE NATURAL AND URBANIZED SIENA
Siena is a city strongly connected with the surrounding countryside,
due to its urban and natural conformation.
From the urban area there are many views of the green landscapes
around Siena.
It is possible to hypothesize the conversion of these green areas in areas
useful to cultural and outdoor activities, as the Turia river bed in Valencia
that became the Jardì al Turia after the flooding of the river.
It is therefore a must to:
• Promote projects in the valleys;
• Use these areas in activities of collective interests (such as sports and
cultural activities);
4. SAN MINIATO
NEIGHBOURHO
OD AS NBS
EXAMPLE IN
SIENA
San Miniato neighbourhood is an excellent
example of urban regeneration :
• An area has been used for the realization
of the Verzura Theatre, characterized by
the realization of an open-air theatre
where the backdrop, seats and sets are
entirely made by the present vegetation,
object of continuous maintenance;
• An area was converted in urban
gardens.
5. DEVELOPMENT OF CULTURAL
IDENTITY THANKS TO NBS
The realization of elements like the previously mentioned provides the
use of places near the city for cultural purposes and for the social
collaboration between citizens in maintenance.
It determines a sense of belonging both to a group and to a territory
and the development of a sensibility in which the awareness of «culture»
let raise the community growth.
The regeneration of such areas could be essential in a future for cities
like Siena, also for the tourism in order to relocate the cultural activities.
6. SIENA AREAS UNDER UNESCO
PROTECTION
The UNESCO candidacy dossier defined
the area under protection:
• The Core Zone, coinciding with the
boundaries of the Historic Centre of
Siena, the area within the Medieval
Walls;
• A green area around the urban one,
the Buffer Zone, coinciding with the
almost the entire municipal territory, in
order to ensure an additional level of
protection to the goods recognized as
World Heritage Site.
