OPENING NIGHT!
BEETHOVEN’S SYMPHONY NO. 5
The 2016/17 Season kicks off with the epic grandeur
of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Tito Muñoz, in his
third season as Virginia G. Piper Music Director, leads
The Phoenix Symphony in a masterful interpretation
of Beethoven’s ever popular and powerful “Victory”
symphony. Joining this program is 2009 London
International Piano Competition winner, Behzod
Abduraimov performing Rachmaninoff’s technically
challenging and compositionally brilliant Rhapsody
on a Theme of Paganini. Maestro Muñoz continues his
tradition of highlighting young American composers
by featuring Nina Young and her “sonic experience”
composition, Remnants, which invites listeners
to perceive the orchestra as one giant instrument –
a resonating body.

foes of fascism. This large orchestral work masterfully
fuses Shostakovich’s emotional themes and motifs into
“music written with the heart’s blood.” Valley favorite,
Concertmaster Steven Moeckel joins this program with
a breathless performance of Samuel Barber’s rhapsodic
Violin Concerto. To open, Maestro Muñoz once again

of the celestial city.” The evening opens with Frederick
Delius’ The Walk to the Paradise Garden, a musical
juxtaposition of the immutability of nature and the
transitory condition of the human experience. Tenor
Paul Appleby also joins The Phoenix Symphony
for Benjamin Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and

Piper Music Director, leads The Phoenix Symphony in a masterful interpretation of Beethoven’s ever popular and powerful “Victory” symphony. Joining this program is 2009 London International Piano Competition winner, Behzod Abduraimov performing Rachmaninoff’s technically challenging and compositionally brilliant Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Maestro Muñoz continues his tradition of highlighting young American composers by featuring Nina Young and her “sonic experience” composition, Remnants, which invites listeners to perceive the orchestra as one giant instrument – a resonating body. The Phoenix Symphony Chorus performs in Igor Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, a work based on Psalms 38, 49 and 150, and dedicated in part “to the glory of God.” The program opens with another dramatic work by Brahms, the Tragic Overture which was the “weeping” counterpoint to his festive Academic Festival Overture, known for its dramatic trajectory and shattering close. *Coffee Classics performances feature one hour of select pieces and /or movements from the weekend Classics program. MaestroTitoMuñoz returns for a powerful performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No.7, a patriotic hymn to his hometown of Leningrad and a rallying cry to the foes of fascism. To open, Maestro Muñoz once again features the music of young American composer Adam Schoenberg for the third straight season, this time presenting Schoenberg’s idyllic and lyrical Canto inspired by the birth of his son. This all- British program is highlighted by Vaughan Williams’ radiant and lyrical Symphony No. 5, the “symphony of the celestial city.” The evening opens with Frederick Delius’ The Walk to the Paradise Garden, a musical juxtaposition of the immutability of nature and the transitory condition of the human experience. Tenor Paul Appleby also joins The Phoenix Symphony for Benjamin Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, a collection of six British poems on the subject of the night, including both its calm and sinister aspects. Opening with Divertimento, a lighthearted reflection of the composer’s storied relationship with The Boston Pops, the program also includes selections from the Bernstein archive including the choral work, Chichester Psalms, and Three Meditations from Mass, featuring The Phoenix Symphony’s principal cellist, Melita Hunsinger. • 8. CLASSICS SERIES CHOOSE WHAT’S BEST FOR YOUR BUDGET You have the flexibility to choose the shows and seats that work for your budget with ticket prices starting at just $18. Tito Muñoz brings another dose of Beethoven to the 2016/17 Season with Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony, a towering journey of emotion and invention marking the transition to the Romantic period in classical music. Symphony No. 3 heralds the well-known marcia funebre, or funeral march.
